It's Jai Ho! that has won AR Rahman one of the two Grammys in the Best
Motion Picture Song category. How does it feel?
It's a great feeling. In fact, I had been waiting for international
recognition and a Grammy for Rahman since his Roja days. That a song sung by
me has got him international awards makes me doubly happy. Jai Ho! is a
 blessed song.

Did you congratulate Rahman after the Grammys?
Yes, I did congratulate him on his win.

Rahman even mentioned you in his acceptance speech...
Rahman has been a friend for long. Mentioning my name in a speech is not
really important to me. What is important is the fact that he has received
 so much praise.

Sound man Resul Pookutty had mentioned: `What Zanjeer did for Amitabh,
Slumdog has done for us'. Do you agree?
Rahman is a genius and awards or no awards, his music is universal. Even
before these international accolades came his way, Rahman has been a much
sought-after musician. The only difference now is that he has carved a
bigger circle for himself. It's been a jump ahead on another platform.

Are more Hollywood films coming your way?
Yes, I have composed and sung for Steven Spielberg's next film.

Personally, did you expect more awards for the song?
As I said earlier, this song is blessed. It has already bagged most of the
top international honours. I believe that it will win 100 plus awards
 (laughs).

Last but not the least, do awards make a difference to you?
Awards are fine, but the best award is when your song is played in clubs,
auto-rickshaws, on the radio, in people's cars and is widely demanded for
stage performances. For me, my fans are the biggest reward and award.

 Sukhi comes to Tollywood

 Roshni Mukherjee

Jai ho! Sukhwinder Singh is lending his voice to Tollywood. The singer has
recorded his first Bengali number for Rohin Banerjee's Kolkata — The Metro
Life. With increasing interest of listening to Bengali playback,
Sukhwinder's entry is going to be a bonus for Bengali cinema.

Incidentally, Rohin had always wanted the singer for the title track. After
all, a singer of his calibre would add a different dimension to the project.
I am elated that Sukhwinder agreed, Rohin said, adding that it was all
thanks to Sharad that Sukhwinder came on board. I was discussing about
roping in Sukhwinder with Sharad (Kapoor) when he said that the two of them
are good friends. Once Sharad approached him with the proposal, Sukhwinder
agreed to lend his ear to the Babul Bose's track and Priyo Chattopadhyay's
lyrics that go like: Agun buker majhe/Agun moner majhe/Agun chitar anche
jolchhe lyrics. Sukhwinder loved the song and a meeting later, he was part
 of the project, Rohin revealed.

When CT got in touch with Sukhwinder, the singer had just completed
recording the number. Speaking about his Bengali innings, the singer said,
I've been wanting to sing in Bengali for the past few years. Bengali is a
rich language. When Sharad approached me for the film and I heard the
subject, I agreed. In fact, this is the first time that I am singing in a
Bengali film. Gushing about the song, he said that it is dashing,
energetic, melodious and well-written. But wasn't singing in the language
difficult for the singer? I understand Bengali, came Sukhwinder's quick
reply, adding, It took me hardly half an hour to sing the song. Honestly, I
feel rejuvenated after singing the track. Main khush hoon. So excited is
the singer that he is keen to sing the second number for this film too.

Interestingly, Babul Bose and Sukhwinder know each other since the former's
struggling days. For some time, we had lost touch. Sharad helped us bridge
 the gap, Babul said.

Fact is when, Rohin had told him that he is trying to get Sukhwinder for a
song, Babul had already composed the particular track keeping Sukhwinder in
mind. I told him, `Keep the song only if Sukhwinder is singing it. Or else,
we will think of something else', Babul recalled.

Recollecting his recording experience with the singer, the composer said,
Sukhwinder infused so much energy into my composition that I could hardly
recognise it after the recording. As far as singing in Bangla is concerned,
he wanted to know the meaning of almost every word in the song.

Sukhwinder has sung the remix version of the same song too. Here's hoping
 there's Nasha hi nasha when
