Spicing up a taste of India

INDIAN musical star A. R. Rahman likes to bring something extra to a live show. Tonight he will perform at the Rod Laver Arena accompanied by scores of singers, musicians and dancers and, for several songs, audiences will wear 3-D glasses to watch an animation.
He remembers, he said yesterday at rehearsals, when he was a young musician performing in other people's shows, that the presentation used to be boring, and he resolved to be different.
To him, a spectacle enhances the musical experience, and "gives the songs a new energy".
In India, where the music scene is dominated by the movies, Rahman is one of the most popular composers and performers. He composes not only for Bollywood, but for the flourishing Tamil film industry.
He is probably best known for his score for the Oscar-nominated Lagaan, a tale of love, colonialism and cricket, but he is constantly extending his range, and since the late 1990s has begun to tour outside India. He has written music for symphony orchestras and a Broadway musical, and is working on a musical version of The Lord of the Rings.
He says his 3rd Dimension Tour showcases "some amazing singers" from India and beyond, including a Bosnian artist who will perform songs he wrote for a Chinese martial arts film.
The show is in aid of a new Melbourne-based charity, Charindaa, which has been set up to raise money for various causes by presenting Indian arts events in Australia. The proceeds from the 3rd Dimension Tour will go to Udayan, the leprosy centre in India that is supported by Steve Waugh.
