Look at it another way...I remember reading this loose reproduction of a quote
about greatness in sports. When people talk about what a sports person has not
NOT achieved instead of talking about what he HAS achieved, that is a sign of
greatness.. Sampras never won French Open, Lendl never won Wimbledon.

The mere fact that a channel needs to talk about ARs duds is a back handed
compliment

Well said, Gops. Politicians are never taken seriously but whatever
repute of evenhandedness media had has got evaporated by such ugly
orchestrated campaign. The questions to media are, as you wrote, “Why
are people so bitter over a song,” and, “what have you done that’s so
great? Do you create anything, or just criticize others’ work and
belittle their motivations?”

And this particular article will serve an undisputable proof of the
ugliness of this campaign against ARR.

Thanks.

Swagatham fiasco: Rahman's top 10 duds
ibnlive.com
Posted on Sep 03, 2010 at 11:24 | Updated Sep 03, 2010 at 11:52

The verdict is in. 'Swagatham', A R Rahman’s anthem for the Commonwealth Games,
has received anything but rapturous welcome.

People who have heard it are cool, downloads are flat, music professionals are
looking away – even politicians are denouncing the song.

The slow-paced number, sung by Rahman himself, has got everyone wondering
whether this is what the Games deserves.

PollWhy does the CWG anthem Swagatham not work for you?

Slow-paced

Lacks punch

Style of Rahman is missing

While everyone may wonder what went wrong, it’s worth remembering that Rahman,
for all his apparent Midas touch with melody, has had his share of duds.
Unfortunately, the tune that the nation was looking forward to has turned out
to be one of them.

Some of the songs Rahman composed in his early years for Malayalam and Telugu
films have remained unpopular.

Fans who have grown used to the trademark Rahman style over the years have also
complained the composer is repeating himself.

Towering expectations of the man dubbed “Mozart of Madras” of repeating the
legendary success of ‘Roja’ in every film may have also led to a slump in
quality in some soundtracks.

“I’ve heard better from Rahman,” was the common sentiment on the streets when
“Jai Ho” received international acclaim.

Here, then, are Rahman’s top 10 dud soundtracks from a musical career spanning
almost 20 years – songs that have either bombed at the charts or simply faded
from memory for lack of fizz:

1. 'Swagatham': A nation, eagerly awaiting its own ‘Waka Waka’ from its trusted
composer, is bitterly disappointed at the outcome of the Commonwealth
Games anthem. Critics call it a “cacophony” while fans find the punch missing.

2. 'Raavan': The music of Raavan is dark and appeals to specific audiences. One
of the most anticipated films of 2010, Rahman brings in contemporary techno and
marries it off to Punjabi folk creating tracks like ‘Thok de killi’ that lack
the hummability of ‘Behne de’ or its staying power.

3. 'Fire': Rahman composed the background score for Deepa Mehta's Fire. It had
the appeal of any Rahman classic but failed to leave a mark in India as the
soundtrack was available only through mail order from a German company.

4. 'Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya': Rahman’s Tamil album comes after a hiatus of two
years and disappointed fans say the songs lack character.

5. 'Parasuram': Rahman tries to experiment with lyrics in ‘Jack and Jill’ and
the effect is disastrous. Fans trash the music of this 2003 starrer and ‘Dolna
Dolna’ is the only song that leaves a mark in an album that has songs sung by
Hariharan.

6. 'Jeans': After a decade, ‘Ajooba’ sang by Hariharan is the only Jeans
soundtrack that sticks with audiences. Beautiful lyrics by Javed Akhtar and
Hariharan’s lilting vocals failed to move traditional Rahman fans looking for
more than just instrumental fusions and contemporary background score.

7. 'Mr. Romeo': This Prabhu Deva starrer had songs such as “Mona Lisa” composed
by Rahman that faded with the film.

8. 'Yodha': An off beat Malyalam film that had Buddhist music in it, shifting
away from the usual Rahman style.

9. 'Lovebirds': ‘No Problem’ – perhaps the only song that has outstayed the
film’s shelf life – is part of a collection put together by Rahman that is
mostly forgettable.

10. 'Kadhal Desam': Rahman sang some of the tracks of the 1996 Tabbu starrer.
While Mustafa Mustafa went on to become a hit with several versions being
replicated on the internet by budding artists, numbers such as 'Hello Doctor'
never caught on.

Sometimes, looking stupid might attract. I think that is the whole concept of
this article. It has always been some kind of a marketing strategy to tingle
the emotions of a huge following fan base, so the ripple effect would be more
and more, giving the site its needed traffic glory. This time nobody wants to
lose the opportunity of making AR the scapegoat. Every single blog/wesbite are
making use of it bigtime, like hyenas tearing apart the soul and blood of a
creation. Good for them, they have reasonable achieved what they were aiming
for. The inention is to be become popular by making someone super popular,
unpopular. The very system that the politicians & media, have always followed.
Now topping it all, some of the fellow Industry personalities who always have
craved for success like AR, have followed path. It seems to me like a long
standing Quest to bring down the BEST. Let these LOSERS be happy about it (its
after all one in a lifetime opportunity for them lol), for they never had a
chance to show prominence through sense. We all know it could only come through
Non-Sense :).

Unfortunately, the tune that the nation was looking forward to has turned out
to
be one of them.

Re: [arr] Top 10 duds from Rahman - IBN Live

2010-09-03 Thread Roshan
it seems that they are on a mission to bring down rahman. every damn channel
in this country is now running the "Rahman-Is-A-Dud" show.

the IBN article was the height of all this nonsense. listing a top 10 dud
with hit albums? people actually have loved those albums. they perfectly
knew that those albums were hit. it was written with the intend to
humiliate rahman as he is getting more success internationally.

i guess the best we can do is hope that this phase also will pass. I also
wish that rahman take back that song.. they don't deserve talents like
Rahman.

they would be better off with the other morons that joined in criticizing
rahman.

Typical like a journalist, this guy from IBN or whosoever channel is only
concentrating on his channel's TRP ratings. They very well know the brand value
of ARR and are using Rahman as a tool to make controversial comments to sell
their channel programmes.

Their frenzy was portrayed in PEEPLI (LIVE) movie recently and somehow after
seeing that movie, one tends to pity the media persons. They will record
someone dying and will take pride in showing it as breaking news ...

IBN channel is genuinely the worst channel who takes pride in showing lousy
information as news..

So, Ignore these stupid commentors in TV / newsprint. They don't know the real
AR Rahman which a true Rahman fan knows so why worry ?

I guess this article says it all - you write a list of Top 10 duds and
you actually struggle to come up with 10. Beyond Parasuram, nothing in
that list is a dud. VTV would rank among his biggest hits. As would
Jeans. Has the person even listened to the score of Water? Since when
did the fact that the music was not released a criterion for judging
it's success?

I am reminded of this recent exchange between Apple CEO Steve Jobs and
Valleywag Editor Ryan Tate, following the iPhone 4 death-grip issue,
in which Jobs asked Tate, “Why are you so bitter over a technical
issue,” and, “what have you done that’s so great? Do you create
anything, or just criticize others’ work and belittle their
motivations?”

That's all that journalism has come to today. Every two-bit 14-yr old
with a computer and an internet connection can write any trash and
reach a million people. Except, we are not talking about 14-year olds
but 40-yr old imbeciles.

Unfortunately, the tune that the nation was looking forward to has turned out
to
be one of them.
