Re: Successful SSO (sort of) implementation

2006-07-21 Thread John Baker
Hello,

Given the general discussion of this thread is moving towards our SSO
implementation, I thought I'd just cover a few points.

It's only a few months old, and we've done two releases. After feedback
from people trialling the system, we're building a much better ARS
configuration system for our next release - although right now it's not
overly hard to install if the instructions are followed correctly.

The plugin is generic and works in a variety of SSO environments,
including with Windows Domain Controllers (Jamie found a bug in some of
the libraries we use, and we'l work with him to resolve this when he has
time). We're going through the interesting learning process of discovering
interesting problems and coming up with imaginative solutions, because
every SSO system is different (well technically, they are not supposed to
be, but in practice there are always things that change the behaviour of
an SSO system). A good example of this would be whether a client is
authenticating against a cluster of DCs (a discussion I shall soon have
with Jamie).

While we currently use a model of "SSO or AD/LDAP", we are developing a
much more interesting solution involving a whole variety of authentication
interfaces (including those RSA key fobs).

Our solution will evolve to meet users' requirements, so my message is
simple: Tell us about your SSO system, and we'll tell you if we can help.
If we can't help immediately, we'll tell you how long it'll take before we
can.

Re: Post Installation Tasks for ITSM 7.0 - Schema Sort Order Error

2006-07-21 Thread Art Tavoularis
Hi Mike, the issue you are seeing is due to some invalid records in the
Schema Sort form (i.e. records that reference forms that are not load in
AR). You can disregard this error message as the process continues and
updates the Schema Sort properly for the remaining forms.

Art

No it uses the API.  I just do it for safety (or maybe

thought that running the arsignal command if defs change or meta data changes
through the API layer is not necessary, at least its not necessary for us as the
server group logs clearly show that the primary server signals the rest of the
servers in the server group that a change has occurred, and that the secondary
servers ought to re-read the cache. At least that's the case with ARS 6.3
using the supposedly newer method to set up load balanced

So
assuming you are using this method, does this mean that the migrator bypasses

Hi everyone:

I'm working on something that has me stumped.  I'm
trying to get my 5.1.2 Midtier to work on an IIS6 box without anonymous
logon.  That is, I have my website that my Midtier apps exist under set to
authenticate the user using standard Windows authentication rather than
allowing anonymous access via the IUSR account.  The application comes up
fine in testing, but right after the app renders itself, it displays the ARERR
9201 Session Timed Out error.  If I go back and set IIS to use anonymous
access through the IUSR account, everything works fine.

For good measure, I granted EVERYONE full control to the
Java, New Atlanta, Inet\Scripts, and Midtier folders.  Doesn't help.

Any ideas?

Norm

Re: is it possible to use the notifier on Unix/Linux ?

2006-07-21 Thread Eric Cleereman (IT)
Hi Serouche,

Another option could be to call "write" from a Run Process. This would allow
you to send a message directly to the shell the user is logged in from,
provided they have not disallowed this from within that shell.

This would require a few things in order to work:
-A Remedy Server running on Unix, or a shell account on a Unix box.
-The ID of the workstation the user last logged on from.
-The user's Unix ID.

You should be able to determine the last two things with another Run Process,
executed from an Init Form.

To send the message, the Run Process would be similar to the following:
echo "message from Remedy"|write [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Mid-tier is an option to providing this functionality to users, although
it would not be a real time alert. Users can view the alert list forms
via mid-tier. You could add custom workflow to this form to refresh the
table list if a new alert event is created for the logged in user. Add
a button to this form to open the appropriate record in the appropriate
form and you have a workable solution.

According to Google

  ORA-00936: missing
  _expression_
Cause: A required part of a clause or
_expression_ has been omitted. For example, a SELECT statement may have been
entered without a list of columns or expressions or with an incomplete
_expression_. This message is also issued in cases where a reserved word is
  misused, as in SELECT TABLE.
Action: Check the statement syntax and
  specify the missing component.

OT:FRIDAY Humor - Vacation Time !!

2006-07-21 Thread Gidd Calden

Vacation Humor

 I just got back from
vacation and, boy, do I need a vacation!

 I really needed a
vacation. I was starting to hum the tunes to rap songs.

 On our vacation we stayed
in an 18th century inn that was the site of a notorious affair between Betsy
Ross and John Quincy Gifford.

 "Winnebago" — I think
that’s an old Indian term meaning "I’m gonna kill those kids when I get
home!"

 Just got back from
vacation, and I’m glad to say that my credit cards are all in
remission.

I asked my wife if she
could take any cruise she wanted, which would she take? She said, "Tom."

A cruise is when you go
for days and days--and see nothing but food.

 We vacationed by car and
saw the U.S.A. the old-fashioned way--one tow truck at a time.

 A dream vacation would be
one where your family all gets along.

For those of us in the US, it's time to start
planning our summer vacations.Although you can't shoot them any more, you
can still get a thrill byphotographing animals in the wild. The last time I
was in Africa though, Igot a double hernia from carrying around the stupid
rhino decoys.

Hawaii is also a possibility, assuming one can
afford it. The last time Iwas there, I got a terrific tan. Near as I can
figure, it cost meapproximately $65 a square inch.

Japan is another spot worth considering. Be careful
in the cities though. They all drive sub-compacts. It's been over ten years
since any Americanpedestrian was hit above the waist.

If you can't stand hot dry air, I'd avoid any
country that's mostly desert. At most funerals, they have to prime the
mourners. They still do baptisms, but have to use a damp cloth.

In India, it's not uncommon to see people praying
in the streets. While wehave the same thing in the US, it's pedestrians
crossing.

Mexico is famous for all its festivals. I went down
there once for theannual Kaopectate Festival.

Once in Paris I told my wife that I'd been there
four days and hadn't beento the Louvre yet. She replied, "Don't worry, maybe
it's just the water."

But if you can't get away for a vacation, just tip
every third person yousee. It'll be about the
same

Now do all you Filter work on the e-mails in the new form, this way
you are not doing a lot of work on the Main E-mail form.

Defined Searches on Mid-tier

Is it possible for Mid-tier users to
see the defined searches for a form, without me having to create special
buttons?  I didn't see anything off the bat in the manuals.

ARS 6.3

Thanks,

Install the 6.3 MidTier and point it at the ARS 5.1 server.  You will need to patch the server to at least patch level 1378 (from what I remember) in order to do this.

Turning off Multiple Assign Groups with Asset 6

2006-07-21 Thread Jason Miller
**
Hi all,I am implementing row level access on Help Desk, Change Request and a custom app on my new ITSM 6 database(ARS 6.3 patch 5, RH ES3, ORA 9.2.0.4). When I installed the apps and upgrade to CMDB
1.1 I had Enable Multiple Assign Groups turned on. To optimize the select statements for the row level access I decided to use dynamic fields and turn off multiple assign groups. Now when I open an asset form in a new mode I receive a warning:
You cannot translate the group name in the Group List or Assignee Group field.481;482; (ARWARN 1243)The preceding message occurred during the execution of active link AIAST:AllSetDefaultSubmitter_ShortDesc_Status -- action 1. (ARNOTE 1101)
The AL that is firing is setting field 112 to default which is 480;481;482;. Obviously this is no longer valid because I am no longer allowing multiple assign groups. If I turn multiple assign groups back on the issue goes away.
Does CMDB 1.x / AST 6 require multiple assign groups to be turned on? I have not found any reference to this on the documentation or on support web. Do I have to change the default of field 112 on BMC:BMC_AssetBase to just one group?
Thanks,Jason

I can't believe I forgot to put that info in there...

I'm on ARS 5.1.2 and AIX 5.2

We have a ticket opened in metalink, we haven't heard back yet. My
DBA's are saying it's a hard one to diagnose. It could be a timeout.
What I find odd is that it is happening on the opening of the forms,
while it's returning the workflow. We haven't had any problems with
queries and such returning values.

my 5.x server name arsystem5 port rpc 5556

Hello List,

I am in the process of making a clean install of 6.3 on a box that
already
has an existing AR 6.3 System on it. I was wondering if anyone had ever

done this and run into any problems with the servers fighting over
configuration files. I am running on HPUX and am setting things up for
each AR System to have a different user etc.. Here are a couple of the
specific questions that I had.

1) Can you specify the filepath for the midtier configuration directory
(on
HPUX it is by default /etc/arinstall) and also /etc/arsystem (where the
license and armonitor.conf information lives) during an install? On a
regular install, I do not remember seeing an option for this file path.
2) Can I just make a new configuration file and when I start the
arserver,
can I point it towards that configuration file?

Thanks for your responses.

You will also want to use Remedy Mid-Tier 6.3 Patch 14 or later. I just brought up a development Mid-Tier server running 6.3 it is connecting to an AR 5.1.2 patch 1484 server. Re: installing multiple AR Servers on one box

2006-07-21 Thread Rick Cook
I have two AR Systems (one ARS 7/ITSM 6, the other ARS 7/ITSM 7) on the
same box. I took my first system, detached the DB, did the second
install (into a different directory structure), and then re-attached the
first as something other than ARSystem. All I have to do to switch
between the two is rename the db-name variable in my ar.cfg file and
restart ARS. I even have both using ARAdmin as the DBO.

It can get a lot more complicated than that, as below posts have
indicated. My intent was to show that it could also be pretty simple.

If you want to have two (or more) different ones up and running at the
same time, there are also licensing issues to think about.

You can license two different servers on the same system.  However, you might want to be ready to explain this to BMC.

Re: Turning off Multiple Assign Groups with Asset 6

2006-07-21 Thread Carey Matthew Black

Jason,

We actually spent over a month trying to get HD v6 to install and
going back and forth with technical support trying to figure out what
was wrong. As it turns out it is an UNDOCUMENTED REQUIREMENT for ITSM
that you ENABLE Multiple Assign Groups. ( We also have custom apps
that have never used this feature, so we disabled it after the upgrade
to the v6.3 ARS server. (from v4 where that was never an option) Long
story short... WE finally figured out the problem based on a half
hearted comment by technical support about a data row that should have
been imported with two groups in field 112!. Apparently the ITSM apps
need this feature. So I think you have to leave it on, or suffer the
errors. :( Maybe you could rewrite it, but I doubt it would be worth
the effort.

Groups turned on. To optimize the select statements for the row level access
I decided to use dynamic fields and turn off multiple assign groups. Now
when I open an asset form in a new mode I receive a warning:

You cannot translate the group name in the Group List or Assignee Group

481;482; (ARWARN 1243)

The preceding message occurred during the execution of active link

The AL that is firing is setting field 112 to default which is 480;481;482;.
Obviously this is no longer valid because I am no longer allowing multiple
assign groups. If I turn multiple assign groups back on the issue goes away.

Does CMDB 1.x / AST 6 require multiple assign groups to be turned on? I have
not found any reference to this on the documentation or on support web. Do I
have to change the default of field 112 on BMC:BMC_AssetBase to just one
group?

Thanks,
Jason

Re: Loosing form relation in guides PROBLEM SOLVED

2006-07-21 Thread LAU, DARREN (ASI)
Title: RE: Loosing form relation in guides

So after doing more research it turned out that we had
quite a few orphan records in the different container tables.  Records that
would reference a CONTAINERID that did not exist in the ARCONTAINER
table.

Here's the queries I ran and I deleted the appropriate
records that resulted.

select * from CNTNR_OWNR_OBJ where
OWNEROBJID not in (select SCHEMAID from ARSCHEMA)
select * from CNTNR_OWNR_OBJ where
CONTAINERID not in (select CONTAINERID from
ARCONTAINER)
select * from ARCTR_GROUP_IDS where
CONTAINERID not in (select CONTAINERID from
ARCONTAINER)
select * from ARCTR_SUBADMIN where
CONTAINERID not in (select CONTAINERID from
ARCONTAINER)
select distinct CONTAINERID from
ARREFERENCE where CONTAINERID not in (select CONTAINERID from
ARCONTAINER)
select * from ARREF_GROUP_IDS where
CONTAINERID not in (select CONTAINERID from
ARCONTAINER)
After doing this and
restarting the arserver several times, our guides would no longer lose their
form relations.  Looks like the orphan records would trip up AR upon the
restarts.  Glad to have finally solved
this.

I was thinking it might be something in ARCONTAINER but you are
right that the Primary form data looks like it is stored in
CNTR_OWNR_OBJ.
With all of the logs turned on are there any error messages in
them when you start the service?  What's your OS and DB (we use Solaris and
Oracle and I've never seen this problem on any of our servers).
If you have a test box that you could reproduce this on you
might start all of the logs, stop the service, clear the log files, start the
service, then see if there are any errors in any of the logs.

Fred,
I'm not quite following you here.  Let's take an AL Guide
for example. Where in the definition of a AL Guide is
there a specific reference to a server?  Our problem is that whenever the
AR service is restarted we lose the form relations of our container
objects.  Say if you open up an AL Guide in the Admin Tool, on the basic
tab, under the form name section, the checkbox for the appropriate form gets
magically unchecked.
But if I look at the underlying database table CNTR_OWNR_OBJ all
the appropriate data is still there.  If we manually recheck the
appropriate form through the admin tool the AL Guide will work again.  That
is until the next time the AR service gets restarted and we start at square one
again.

Re: Turning off Multiple Assign Groups with Asset 6

Thanks Carey for the info. I knew it just didn't feel right. This is really frustrating since I read through the archives and docs before deciding it would be best for us to use dynamic fields instead of multiple groups in 112. I have already customized HPD, CHG and TSK with these field and workflow and have even converted my custom Employee Change Request app that is currently using multiple assign groups in production.
I think I'll bounce this one off support (just for fun?).JasonOn 7/21/06, Carey Matthew Black <

to the v6.3 ARS server. (from v4 where that was never an option)  Longstory short... WE finally figured out the problem based on a halfhearted comment by technical support about a data row that should have
been imported with two groups in field 112!. Apparently the ITSM appsneed this feature. So I think you have to leave it on, or suffer theerrors. :( Maybe you could rewrite it, but I doubt it would be worththe effort.

Version 7.0 Sample Data

2006-07-21 Thread Pedro Cardoso
**
Hi, I just finished a CMDB, Service Desk and SLM installation, and I look surprised that there is not sample data!
I don't select the DSL (definitive software library) in Incident and Problem, because in another installation it spends a lot of time.
Is could be the reason?  or ITSM v7 is sample less.

Is anyone have a sample info, I would appreciate it.

Thanks..

I didn't have any, either, and I did select the DSL.
Going through the process of configuring the data is a good way of learning how
this new application works - the only way at present.  So, since Remedy
gave us lemons, I'm making lemonade.
