William,

There is a bug in SP1. We experienced the same issue and were told to get
to SP2 to fix this. We are running SP2 in Dev now and its only taking
about 5 minutes to restart but we don't have a fully populated DB/load on
it yet from our prod image.

Thanks David Easter ,
I know we are using the max of 20 preload threads, however I do need to
check on the firewall or other latency-creating mechanic between the server
and the DB.

If you think of anything else my ears are open.

Additional ideas:

  1. Check to see if your network operations team has inserted a
firewall or other latency-creating mechanic between the server and
  the DB.

General database tips
To avoid a decline in the BMC Remedy AR System server performance, remember
the following tips:

   · Do not use a firewall between the BMC Remedy AR System server
and database tiers. This can impact performance significantly.
[…]

  2. Check to see if you are taking advantage of preload threads:

Faster server initialization
You can now configure the server to use multiple threads (known as “preload
threads”) when loading the cache from the database. This option allows the
server to make better use of system resources such as CPU and network
bandwidth, and can greatly reduce the time required to load the cache at
server initialization. This option can also be configured for use during
run time. For information about using this option, see “Using preload
threads” in the Configuration Guide.

William,

I got the same issue on MS SQL on a remote server and find it very slow to
start-up.

Are you using FQDN (fully qualified domain name) for all server references
within BMC? With a correct setup in you DNS servers it should not make a
difference. I found that we had less issues and quicker startup if I used
FQDN for all server references.

Your RAM your your mid-tier sounds low to me. Bring it up to 4 CPU's and
minimum 4 GB RAM. This make no difference in start up for the app server.

Row-level security can be applied a number of ways.

Assignee Group (Field 112) is common and easy. Add it to your form and
populate it with the group(s) that you want to grant whatever access to.
You'll obviously want to implement workflow to manage it - set it for new
records, reset it on behalf of changes, whatever. Field ID 1 (Request ID)
controls record access itself. Set Assignee Group View or Change to it. The
target group will have the intended access on a per-row-basis.

Dynamic groups are another way. They provide much more granular control.
Create groups with ids 6 and higher. In your form, you add fields with the
same ids. In your field permissions, such as Field ID 1, you assign the
intended permission to whichever group name you used to provide the permission.
This supports both groups and users (delimited with single quote). Also
supports multiple fields/groups (many of them could introduce a performance
issue based on total number of groups, number of fields in a form, etc.).

Best to read-up on them in Remedy documentation.

That is how we did it, initially we installed the AR Core and ITSM
apps on a VM, did all the necessary customizations and configurations
and just cloned the VM for the QA and Prod environments by changing
the appropriate values in the ar.conf and host files), But once
established we just used Dev Studtion to migrate wf changes and import
tool to migrate data changes, which requires no prod down time. You
can use migrator, just ensure when migrating workflow and forms, to
set the attributes, so that associated items don't inadvertently get
migrated that you don't want migrated (See tools - options)

We intend to follow industry best practices and the ITIL model for
development, such that we will have a Remedy development, test, stage,
 production, and training environment.

We understand that we can use tools such as Migrator to move data between
tiers. However, what is the recommended method for the installation and
deployment of each tier? Is it better to VMware clone one environment to
another, changing computer names and IP addresses using appropriate
Microsoft / VMware tools and then manually changing the Remedy
configurations, or a fresh install of Remedy in each environment and
focus
only on using Migrator to keep data in sync? We are at odds with keeping
Remedy configurations identical between tiers (solution is to clone) and
missed settings changes / integrity / stability of each Remedy
configuration
between tiers (solution is to fresh install each).

Any input / advice would be greatly appreciated.

 Thank you.
