Re: Disaster Recovery

2012-01-11 Thread Axton
That's a pretty generic inquiry. You should first define your recovery
objectives and what level of investment you are willing to make, in terms
of implementation time and cost. It is a compromise from that point
forward to balance the objectives and cost. If you can define the
objectives and the investment ceiling, you will get useful responses.
Short of that you will receive a lot of responses that don't apply with
the off chance that you will be able to use something someone sends because
their assumptions were in-line with your reality.

When it comes to HA, options start cheap, but the cost ceiling can go very
high, all depending on what you want to achieve.

Axton Grams

Axton is correct:
If you are on an Oracle DB ( we have used dataguard) over to another server
DB Level,
and either had the application on the same server or another, in standby...
Great for failover, but it takes up to an hour to ensure it is ready to go.

It really depends on your requirements:: Failover 4 hours, 6 hours, 1 day,
or 2 $econd$..

Our environment,

Unix 6.1.6
Oracle 10g
Ars & db are local.

Our DR, take about 30min to failover ( not including functionality test)

We do dataguard, to give you an idea of what we to invoking dr
1. Shutdown prod app.
2. Dns change
3. Db sync data that was not replicated
4. Start dr app.
5. Websphere MT - restart jvm
6.Test, make sure everything integrated/internal works.

We ensure dr works by testing it yearly before storm season.

Sincerely,
D.Dussie
