[AsburyPark] Re: Linkedin Help
Mario, I started an advertising agency about a year ago and Linkedin has been one of the greatest tools I have to both prospect new business and find resources I need for specialized functions. I really don't know whether we would have survived without Linkedin. I'd be happy to give you a bit of advice on how to get the most out of it if you'd like. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, oakdorf oakd...@... wrote: --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, MarioAPNJ@ wrote: Dave, I joined, but have to examine how best to use it. I avoided all the social networking sites. Who needs to waste more time? I am also looking at to see if has any value as a model or tool for an advanced membership app on something I'm working on. So far, in the two weeks I've tinkered around, read a book at Borders on it's value, I've tracked down a few ex bosses, friends and others I've worked with along the way. On the AP side, I'm curious to see If people would join, who they are in their field. It may be a way for some LOCAL expertise to be called upon either in a job opening or other services - like your mentoring or tutoring. To me, it all depends on how well YOUR network is linked or if there is a group relative to your area of expertise or of there is a local group, such as Asbury Park. Look at it as online Chamber of Commerce (which there is for Asbury Park, with 3 members, and no response from a request to join...) So the group has to managed as well. Look at groups that are managed well - they hae discussions and other postings. So I joined real estate related, MU ALumni etc. Again, one big experiement. My kids don't get it so... Another exmaple, there can be more then one manger for a group - you can be the manager for the asbury park group - pst those great links and more. Yahoo! Mario, I am also a Linkedin fan and a Facebook one. I use Linkedin to stay in touch with work colleagues. It helped me get my most recent job by keeping me on the radar of people I worked with in NYC when I was at the bank. Facebook has put me back in touch with people I haven't talked to in decades not because I didn' want to, but because life got busy. It also keeps me in touch with my ginormous family including the ones in Ireland. Give it a shot. Even if you aren't looking for work it would probably be a good thing for some of your former students to find you for job references. Jennifer Yahoo! It comes up here Columbia School of Journalism plog - Google Search or http://tinyurl.com/86tn3b only twice just repeating your own claim to coinage with the misleading implication of an imprimatur from that school of journalism. Your link to The Kicker, a blogger, at Columbia Journalism Review is fine. She simply repeats the NYT story about DJ's email to Carr. Congrats to TCN and DJ for the publicity. BTW: the UPDATE and hyperlink to Mark Potts which are now part of her blog argue forcefully against the idea of print media shunning the web. But that debate is also of no concern to me. Let the marketplace decide. Here, in full deja vu, is what your link brings up: The Kicker — December 22, 2008 09:18 AM NJ “Plog” “Shuns Web, And Thrives” By Liz Cox Barrett The TriCityNews, an Asbury Park, NJ alt weekly with a print run of 10,000, “ is prospering precisely because it ignores the Web,” reports David Carr in today’s New York Times. “Why would I put anything on the Web?” asked Dan Jacobson, the publisher and owners of the newspaper. “I don’t understand how putting content on the Web would do anything but help destroy our paper. Why should we give our readers any incentive whatsoever to not look at our content along with our advertisements, a large number of which are beautiful and cheap full-page ads?” A “‘plog’, a blog on paper” is how Jacobson describes his paper, which employs three full-time staffers and a part-timer . “A little ray of light” in the media beat is how Carr describes the story of the TriStateNews, which is “ double-digit profitable, and has been growing at a clip of about 10 percent a year since it was founded in 1999.” A real made-for-David-Carr’s-column story (which didn’t escape the publisher, who emailed the TriCityNews’s good news to Carr). UPDATE: Carr’s headline should be the much less striking: “Local Newspaper Shuns Non-Local Information And Thrives,” argues (more or less) Recovering Journalist Mark Potts. “Contrary to what Carr and Jacobson believe, the secret to the TriCityNews’ success probably isn’t that it fiercely eschews the Web. It’s that it’s fiercely local.” Way to dim Carr’s little “ray of light.” _http://www.cjr.org/the_kicker/nj_plog_shuns_web_and_thrives.php_ (http://www.cjr.org/the_kicker/nj_plog_shuns_web_and_thrives.php) === (http://tinyurl.com/7akd7n) **New year...new news.
