[AsburyPark] Re: Upperclass boardwalk and downtown?
To have section 8 or housing vouchers you need rental properties. Many NJ towns do not have rentals. See Wyckoff, Franklin Lakes, Skillman, or very few. I would prefer public assistance benefits be contingent on job/career training and job placement. Abbot districts do have free preschool at age 3, in other towns nothing and there is nothing I know of from 0-3. There are some subsidies available in poorer areas like Jersey City. My friends are applying for the NJ health insurance for their children bc her husband lost his job. Problem is, they live in Ridgewood and those doctors don't take the insurance. There is a segregation, poverty is concentrated. So, while there are services available in those areas, the same are not available elsewhere. I think that the concentration of poverty and forced segregation is a big part of the problem. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, oakdorf oakdorf@... wrote: Thank you. However this: Provide affordable (Section 8) housing in every town allowing people to choose where they want to live Note: This exists today in some form. I am a section 8 landlord. Go ot OT schools etc. provide real job training and career counseling Isn't that afford today? in addition to welfare benefits, public daycare facilities so that moms can return to work Isn't that afford today? Shouldn't that be for all moms? along with affordable healthcare again, healthcare exists in some form, right? What about affordable for you and me? mental healthcare, addiction counseling, and reproductive healthcare/counseling. ALL afford today. Especially if you face jail time vs. counseling. A mother of 3 section 8 benefit - in the area of !700 per month. - Does that count as affordable? - Daycare. - free post HS and preschool education, food, medical. Add it up. Im all for programs to help. The trick is getting people to make it worth their while. Trust me. I've spoken to many people who RATHER NOT get off the benefit package - it simply doesn't pay enough. And true, there are thousands of people on wait lists for section 8. The correct term is HOUSING VOUCHERS. The voucher enables a person to take it anywhere - so I have a middletown check every month, a long branch check every month and a couple from the state every month. Get inspected each year by whatever program and have to fix whatever my tenant may have broken. it could get crazy. NOt much an incentive, is it? Yahoo! Not if people committing crimes are over 18. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, asburycouple asburycouple@... wrote: (CNN) -- Philadelphia has been plagued by teen violence, but the City of Brotherly Love is fighting back. Mayor Michael Nutter announced this week a robust initiative that began with a stiff curfew at 9 p.m. Friday. The effort comes after a string of attacks on residents by groups of young people who are alerted to sudden gatherings at a given place via e-mail and social media. It's a growing problem in this country, police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey told CNN Friday. Nutter delivered tough remarks about the problem in a church sermon Sunday that has received national and international attention, a blunt no-excuses scolding that happened to coincide with the start of the England riots. An African-American, Nutter noted that those involved in the Philadelphia attacks are predominantly black and said their behavior damaged themselves and damaged their race. He upheld religious values, underscored the importance of parental discipline and lambasted absentee parents, particularly fathers, for neglecting and not keeping watch over their children. He said fathering is engaging with the child and shaping them. He described a neglectful dad as a human ATM or a sperm donor. Accordingly, his measures target both the young attackers and their parents or legal guardians. Nutter signed an order temporarily moving the curfew to 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays for everyone under the age of 18 in targeted enforcement districts. They are in Center City, the downtown area, and University City, the West Philadelphia neighborhood where the University of Pennsylvania is located. Throughout the rest of the city, the curfew will remain 10 p.m. for those under the age of 13 and those for minors under the age of 18. Minors who are caught breaking curfew will be sent home, brought home or transported to a police station where their parents will be contacted. Minors may be issued a citation with a $100 to $300 fine for a first offense, the city said in a press release. Parents will receive a first-violation notice and then will be fined up to $500 for successive violations. These notices and citations will be issued when the parent comes to collect their child from the police station. If parents don't come for their child within a reasonable time, police will contact the Department of Human Services to start an investigation. Parents whose child under the age of 18 is found liable or guilty by a court for injury, theft or other criminal acts will be liable to the person who suffered the injury or loss of property. Parents and legal guardians will be subject imprisonment for up to 90 days for repeat curfew violation offenses. Ramsey said Friday the first offense will most likely prompt a warning, with fines to follow for other curfew violations. If they come down and start to assault people or damage property we are going to arrest them. Up to the beginning of the school year next month, police will maintain a greater presence in the targeted enforcement areas and work to improve camera surveillance. It will also expand weekend hours at recreation centers. Yahoo! The point being if AP is being given all these millions for education and because the area is designated a blighted area, to encourage entreprenures to come here, open and establish businesses but I hear they come here get a chunk of the grant money, open a business and in a year the business is kaput! I didn't spark a race riot because it always about race. Do you see any Black businesses? One or two. Mr. Fashions sold his business and the building it was in is under renovation. The buyer moved the store to an obscure location in Ocean Twp. If you didn't know this little factoid, you would think Mr. Fashions no longer existed. Each one one of them hit a hot point while pressing their agenda. Neither of them intentionally or otherwise trying to offend. The sad reality is that crime across our country is way up, I understand that spring lake has had more crimes committed this summer than the past ten years combined. The cause? Heroin. Addiction. Poverty. Two of the three no know racial boundaries. Poverty does. Sharon stated that 12% of the population are Black. Keady can surely tell us what % of the population are in jail and commit the bulk if the street crime across our country. Sharon is living proof that we are what the constitution says; created equal. But for Asbury Park the sad harsh reality is that there is a generation of lost displaced backs against the walk mostly Black males who have turned to gangs and street crime because they have no alternative, they seemingly have no choice. This despite fantastic parents like Sharon that have led exemplary lives of hard work and toil and service to their fellow man, only to see their sins and daughters besmirch their good names. So what's the point and what's the solution? Because in Asbury Park you keep your eyes open wide not get caught in a situation where a young man with a gun wants more than you got. As Asbury has moved forward with restaurants and clubs and shops all designed for upper middle class rich people, the streets are still littered with poor lost souks he'll bent on destruction. The solutions to make Asbury a safe, crime free community are complex and difficult and they start with leadership at the highest levels working together. In the schools, in the religious organizations and the local government the leadership has to come together and start the arduos process of healing and growth. So far that ain't happening but talking about it here and there and everywhere is at the very Lear a start. Yahoo! When Mr Fashion was on Cookman and Carl Williams was the owner, I once had a long talk with him. Don't forget, he even served as mayor. If I recall correctly, members of his own community called him names, like Uncle Tom. I once came up with list of minority owned banks. And sent to someone in the city. Maybe the city leaders should an african american business summit. Plan ahead, invite minority owned businesses leaders. Should be a joint effort between school and UEZ, Commerce and State. Yahoo! See notes --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, fancypaaantz fancypaaantz@... wrote: To have section 8 or housing vouchers you need rental properties. Many NJ towns do not have rentals. See Wyckoff, Franklin Lakes, Skillman, or very few. They do, but the market rate rentals are not want the government want s to pay. I bet everyone of those towns is getting sued, if they have open land for sale, by developers under the affordable housing quotas established way back. Don't forget, many of those towns sold that off to towns like AP, who finally decided they didn't want to take the money from other towns. The money they did get - wonder how that was distributed? And really to have section 8, you need the Housing Authority to distribute and maintain a list - I think all are closed. The housing authority also has to be able to function, collect money, make needed repairs and act responsibility to it can do it's job - and help the people who need it. Apparently, from what I read the past 40 years (yeah since I was ten), some housing authorities have had trouble operating. A person receiving $1700 in a housing voucher per month is what kind of benefit? $That's $20,000 per year. That's you making around $27,000 per year to cover just rent. I would prefer public assistance benefits be contingent on job/career training and job placement. Why? The unemployment system is automated. If you do collect, you can be in DisneyWorld on vacation, call up, enter you id and when you get home, your check is there. Sure. to get your check, you have to come in to a location - at LEAST on that day and sit there for 8 hours, Take a class. Volunteer. Work on skills. Or you can sit home, go work that second job for cash. And there is another benefit that is offered. I got so f'in pissed off at a woman I knew, who first worked for a charity, them for a co I worked with. I'll add in that she is white. I saw her not to long ago and she told me how GREAT IT WAS COLLECTING UEmployment. Why I asked becuase they have a program...I went to Rutgers, got my masters AND got to collect the whole time. Mind you, she is a homeowner, has no kids... I looked at her and said wow, that's real, real nice. That's ok. I'll be dishing out $1200 per WEEK when my son goes off to school next week for one semester (15 weeks). his scholarship was free room and board. I can't complain I guess. Abbot districts do have free preschool at age 3, in other towns nothing and there is nothing I know of from 0-3. There are some subsidies available in poorer areas like Jersey City. What's that benefit worth? Anywhere from $6,000 to $10,000 per kid, right? That means YOU would have to make from $8,000 to $13,000 per year for that benefit. My friends are applying for the NJ health insurance for their children bc her husband lost his job. Problem is, they live in Ridgewood and those doctors don't take the insurance. So? I was with my daughter at her Doctor the other day. I have Oxford. I was paying around $1200 per year via my wife's plan. On my own, it was $1500 per month. Her boss was only paying her's meaning I had to cover myself and the two kids. YOu think that's free? I finally cursed him out one day - it's a fairly large co for a small co. As part of her much deserved pay increase, he is now eating it. Sad part is, we have OXFORD/United Health. At the end of the year, my daughter's dr is dropping them. It's a dr choice. They don't like the reimbursement rate - later. And that's with co-pays for office visits and high out/pckt. Sure, on my own, I can deduct 100% of the cost of medical But to deduct it, first you have to be able to afford to pay for it. As a kid, I don't know what we had - other real little $ my dad took a second career after the chicken farm. We had Doc Malta in Wanamassa. Love him or hate him. Office in his house. School Dr. Jersey Shore ER doc. Baseball coach. Taught us how to cough. You thought you broke your finger, he pulled it and told you to go home. Caught my Grandmother's cancer. Told my wife she athlete's foot. When she disagreed, he told her women never want to hear that. My mother once told him she would have to pay him at the end of the week. He yelled at her did you here me ask you for money? There is a segregation, poverty is concentrated. So, while there are services available in those areas, the same are not available elsewhere. I think that the concentration of poverty and forced segregation is a big part of the problem. Well Asbury Park Housing Authority maybe has to get their act together. I kind of follow long branch, and noticed their pretty nice new housing. Since Long Branch is copying the success of Asbury's parking meters, maybe Asbury Park should model their public housing program after long branch. Maybe a better idea - would be to MERGE the two together. A teacher in neptune told me a story of a kid who wore long sleeves
