For example, I work on Bond street. The metered zone on this street is non-residential, all business. The 2 restaurants are only open in the evening. I had a choice, pay $8 to go to work, or park a few blocks away. Fortunately, they aren't enforcing yet, so I parked out front on an empty street. Mattison? It's an empty street. There is no demand for parking there on a weekday during working hours, and that's exactly what you see. Meanwhile, we employees are now being asked to either pay, or walk a few blocks in the rain. As for the tension here today, it could have been avoided if a poster didn't belittle people because they don't want to pay extra for the coffee at a venue they've been faithful to. Maybe the little bucks don't matter to some people, but it's not exactly fair to imprint your own economic situation on other people and belittle them here. It does absolutely no good. That's what I think started the bad vibe here today, and it could have easily been avoided. Perhaps the city over thought the enforcement zone and should have considered limiting it to Cookman. That would've been a good compromise that made more people happy. We are no longer living in times when people are willing to be nickled and dimed to death over everything. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, oakdorf oakdorf@ wrote: no one's having a fit. no one's accusing you of anything. it's a point. people take parking spaces is one issue business owners have to contend with. I've seen them during the day and at night when there's something going on. Right on the money. One of my co-workers wife's expressed concern about using the parking meters late in the evening. She's feels like a sitting duck in the dark while getting out her wallet, and having to hold her cell phone in one hand as a flashlight because the keypad is hard to see (I see people doing that every day). Is that not a very valid concern? It's not much different than the issue on my 200 block. Just this past weekend my next door neighbor started a conversation asking if I felt safe in reference to parking around the block, which makes the 3 occupied houses on my block look empty. Nobody is parking on 1st Ave, and the city refuses to budge about easing year round, till midnight parking. What happens when one of our houses gets broken into because we now look like easy targets? It's already happened once to my next door neighbor. Somebody climbed over his fence, into his locked back yard, and stole 2 bikes that were locked up back there. My downstairs neighbor, who's pretty tough, has also expressed concerns related to our abandoned street. That's why we are pressing our luck and parking out front. So far, no tickets. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Dennis Dubrow traderdube@ wrote: Many of you are personalizing the situation. The fact is that if you talk to the business owners who rely on their business to live, they are down. Some of them are holding out hope that in the long run the parking will pay off. Before the parking went into effect I know a couple of downtown residents that parked 2 or 3 cars on Cookman, leaving them there for days at a time. Similarly, we used to watch the owners/employees of stores park their cars in front of their stores all day, yet they still complained they had no business. And while we all know that the riots of July 4 are the traditional date that started the decay of Asbury as a downtown shopping mecca, it was the malls and free parking that had an equally bad affect on downtowns in Red Bank and Long Branch as well as Asbury. And it has been mentioned, where is the marketing for downtown AP? There is none, other than a weekly huge email from the city, that basically promotes bars and restaurants. All, 100% of the business owners I know and have recently spoken with about the parking are/were in favor of the paid parking, but that doesn't change the fact that they are going to have a helluva time coming up with the Nov 1 rent check. And there is another issue that is not being discussed. The business owners and their employees who work after dark, who work until 10PM and later. They now have to walk 3-4-5 blocks to their cars at night. I have been told that one person has already been accosted and robbed while walking to their car. While paid parking is a fruitful plan, the fruit needs to start out as seeds, or it's artificial; the implementation of park; The Parking Plan, is either non-existent, or artificial. Yes opening the parking spaces in the long run should help ap businesses... On the weekends. During the week at night not so sure ... Empty dark streets at night people driving thru may not stop. I am usually not concerned about walking to my car after work 10pm... Tuesday was looking over my shoulder as there were no lights on the street(street lights or business lights) businesses should consider some display lighting for the 6pm-10pm hours when they are closed and it's dark... Those driving thru Or eating might see a reason to come Back There is a police presence during the day and on weekends ... Tues-fri/Sunday night none... And if it's raining forget it... This week car break ins and 2 business broken into tuesday night Yes a large anchor store would help foot traffic and most asbury park businesses are very happy to serve 1 cup of coffee Sent from my iPhone Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Vintage Car Ride from Asbury's Boardwalk...
LOOKING FOR CARS [:D] : I'm still holding on to hope that these cars might still be around somewhere. While most of Asbury's boardwalk amusements and rides were dismantled and/or destroyed years ago, I understand that some may have been auctioned off or sold to other amusement parks or collectors. If anyone has any information regarding the whereabouts of these particular cars or track, please reply to this post. This was my all-time favorite ride - I would love to see one of these cars again :) [162] [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo!
