Since there is very little difference between the March and June
proposals, this will all be over quickly.

The DEP will re-review the portions of the March proposal that are
different than the June proposal. There will be a public input
period. Then the DEP will rule, and I'm predicting they rule in favor
of the 10 and 16 story C8 building.

That's really all there is to it. Doesn't seem to amount to a hill of
 beans in the long run.

I dont know about what casino you're referring to, but
I think we have WAAAY to many of them and PLENTY of
venues for gaming as it is, including the lottery
which many are making profits from, yet education
still suffers and is always hurting for funding, and
property and other taxes are stratospheric. More
gambling wont help, those promises are seldom kept. As
for the Museum, I agree Asbury would be a PERFECT
place, not only for it's past and present importance
MUSICALLY in NJ, but also to bring visitors and hence,
dollars into the town to aid in its revitalization.
God knows, music and its related businesses have been
one of the few forces that have kept this town going
ALL THIS TIME, AND DURING THE WORST TIME, AND COULD

KIDS (AND BIG KIDS LIKE ME!) Another reason the
PALACE (sob) COULD'VE BEEN AN IMPORTANT AND HISTORICAL
HUB IN A UNIQUE, QUAINT AND INTERESTING AS WELL AS FUN

COULD REALLY THRIVE AGAIN IF WE BUT HAVE THE WILL. I'M
SURE SOME OF YOU OUT THERE REMEMBER THE BUMPER CARS

MACHINES IN THERE AT ONE TIME. BOY, HOW I MISS THAT,
AND NO PLACE ELSE WAS LIKE IT!!!(MUCH LIKE THE PALACE,
WHICH WAS TO ME, A SACRED PLACE, A SHRINE TO
AMUSEMENTS AND ENTREPENEURSHIP and VISION and WONDER

MORE FUN THAN SEASIDE, AND WE HAD ALL THOSE GREAT
CONCERTS (AND STILL DO) IN CONV. HALL! THE MORE WE
PRESERVE OF THE 'OLD ASBURY' AND THE SPIRIT OF IT, THE
BETTER OFF WE'LL BE, IMHO. NO ONE NOT WELL VERSED IN
THE REAL SPIRIT OF WHAT WE WERE ONCE SHOULD BE ALLOWED
TO KNOCK ANYTHING DOWN AND REDEVELOP IT INTO SOMETHING
SOUL-LESS AND WITHOUT VISION. HEY YOU ENTREPRENEURS

After the riots of July 1970, a mall was built off the Asbury
Circle. It opened around 1975, with the Steinbach Store being the anchor, then
Sears moved across 66, from where the IHOP is. The main entrance to Sears was
there. The closing of Steinbach's on Cookman sounded the death knell of the
"old" downtown. The rest of the stores went to Norwood Ave., in Deal, like Pix
Shoes. Nahan's and Fischs's moved to Ocean township on Hwy. 35. Nahan's is
still where is moved to. Fisch's went out of business. Bob and Irving's, Pix
Shoes, the Army /Navy Store on Main St. are where the new Municiple complex
is. By 1975, only the Baronet and one other theatre was open. The Savoy on
Mattison, closed! The Press Box restaurant, Rexall's, (Sonny's), Bob and
David's, Wolco's, the Record store, Mr. Fashion, and a couple of dime stores,
Woolworth's, WTGrants and another, were all that was left.
Canadian's at Press Plaza closed shortly after. The small boutiques also moved
to upscale Deal or Allenhurst. The Bra and Girdle factory were there through
the 80's, then they closed by Kennedy Park. Bergers moved to Seaview Square
and Dainty Apparel closed. I was a professional shopper back then, with 5
growing children, so I knew where the clothes, shoes, eyeglasses for my kids
and Varsity Jackets were, that they HAD to have! First Communion,
Confirmation, Buster Brown and Stride Right Shoes were ALL purchased rith
there on Cookman, Ave., THE place to be, until the remaining stores shut down,
one by one! I never liked Monmouth Mall, so I'd go to Woodbridge and Staten
Island to shop for my kids, thereafter, although there was a Stenbach still in
Red Bank. Never cared much for Red Bank. Different attitude there if you're
Black. The better stores in North Jersey didn't give a rat's ass, as long as
your money was green! I liked that! Shopped at AS, Ohrbach's, Stern's and
Macy's. Better stuff! Really good service,
  too.SharonBoone[EMAIL PROTECTED]--\"dfsavgny\"<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Re: [AsburyPark] freedom is just another word

2005-07-31 Thread David J. Mieras
Bruce has never tried to distance himself from Asbury and that endeared the
core fans. He always comes back and doesn't forget his roots. That is why
Bruce and Asbury are like peanut butter and jelly.

In the mid 1960's there were actually black kids I spoke to @ Neptune
Intermediate School that had never been to the beach. Just a mile or two
West of the ocean and never saw a wave break. The only explanation I have is
that they were afraid. I remember this because I started b.s.'ing a young
boy about how we go ice skating on the ocean and glide up and down on the
frozen waves. He believed me which I thought incredible.

I think it was 1964 when the Ocean Grove Grammar School was integrated? Talk
about token efforts, our school enrolled Rayford Taylor who was in my 6th
grade class. Ocean Grove Elementary had grades K through 6th and Rayford was
the only Black. As you can see, change did not come easily even w/ the
Federal mandate. It was only six years later that the Asbury riots occurred.

White flight was instantaneous from Asbury after the riots. People were
scared to shop and visit. The only success for the City after 1970 was the
music scene. That is why music must lead the way in the re-birth. Everybody
loves music! The New Jersey Music Hall of Fame is working diligently to be a
defining presence for future generation.

I believe that BlueBishop wasn't trying to deny that the beaches of
Asbury were segregated. I believe his point, and I am 100% sure he will
confirm or deny, was that there was no official policy concerning the
use of Asbury Park's beaches. That the same racist attitudes still exist
in the hearts and minds of people of all races is still true. What
role racism plays in Asbury Park today is an interesting question and
topic for this group. What role racism is playing in the Police
Directors gig is what started this thread and is a most pertinent and
enduring question and a question that needs to be answered.

Vin Scelsa is still on the radio, he does a Saturday night show called
Idiots Delight from 8 to midnight and last night he had Daniel Wolf on.
Wolf is the author of 4th of July Asbury Park A History of the
Promised Land. For those of you who don't know DJ Vin Scelsa. Vin was
amongst the original WNEW FM DJs that took FM radio in NYC and created a
short lived but much loved genre of radio called free form. Vin was the
on air DJ the horrible night that John Lennon was shot. The same night
Bruce and the E Streeters performed in Philadelphia and went on with the
show after they heard the news half way through the concert. Anyway, Vin
is a master interviewer, especially with authors, and his 4 hour
interview with Daniel Wolf is a great listen, especially for those who
are into Bruce. Wolf brought a recording of Dr Zoom and the Sonic Boom
doing a wild psychedelic version of Carol King's Will You Love Me
Tomorrow. They also discuss at length the role that racism played in
AP. If anyone wants to listen to the interview follow this link,
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/iddiot_tree/ and right click on the .zip
file. You will be able to download a zipped MP3 file that is the entire
show. If anyone needs assistance getting the
file, please email me off digest and I will assist you. It is really
very easy to download and listen.

A couple things I didn't know from last night. The riots in Asbury were
not a part of the nationwide riots that hit Newark and LA??? I always
thought they were the same, however, according to wolf, AP's riots were
2 years later. Wolf also spoke about fights that occurred after a
Frankie Lymon show at Convention Hall that spread to the boardwalk, very
 interesting.

It is pretty amazing that a city with such a vast history as Asbury
Parks, a history that literally includes most of the most famous
performers, politicians and scene makers from most of the 20th
century, has become defined by Bruce Springsteen. I imagine that in 100
years, when they talk about AP, Bruce will still be what they talk
about. And that ain't a bad thing, after all, Bruce's early work
captures all that Asbury had to offer in the most amazing literate
terms, starting of course with Sandy, and sadly bookended by My City In
 Ruins.

There are X number of structures in Asbury Park. Many of which have lied
in a dormant or rotting state for way to many years. Of those
structures, houses and apartments and commercial buildings, I wonder
what percentage of them have changed ownership and either have been
rehabilitated, or are being rehabilitated at this time. Even without the
waterfront redevelopment, the fact that Asbury is being reconstructed is
a hard fact to argue with. When all is said and done, what Asbury Park
will look and feel like might just

The carousal house is an incredible design built solely for one purpose. How
many carousal houses are there today in N.J. or the U.S.A.? I do not think
the present owner wants to save the Casino. Talk is cheap as any politician
knows. I would love to produce and display an exhibit for the NJMHOF in the
carousal house someday!!!

I've seen shows in the Casino, ask Ricky D about Led Zep, Tom. I've driven
go-karts around the ice rink, was on the hockey team, played pinball w/ my
friend's Southside and Bruce, and a whole lot of other fun thing's in the
Casino. The power plant is also quite impressive to me. If you had seen the
stack lit up in the 50's (what workmanship for a smoke stack), you might
change your mind about these building's. Same for the carousal house. All
lit, reflecting off the lake w/ the Mayfair and Palace was extraordinary.
There was also a carousal building, duck pin bowling alley, theater, etc.
lit to the hilt on the Ocean Grove side. Thriving stores were located
boardwalk level in the power plant. It was an extremely healthy business
district. It's all gone except the Casino and power plant.

The start over again/make massive amounts of money crowd must be happy that
the Casino is falling into the ocean. Saves money on future demo. The new
face of Asbury has George Washington on it and George usually wins.

As for aesthetic appreciation, that is certainly in the eye of the

I'm certain that if the Casino never existed, and Larry Fishman

The Casino is the classic example of Asbury's past being over-

Hello Tom,

Hello Dave, I did many of
those things below myself.

Maybe you were one of
the Casino Boys w/ your shirt open? Nah!
Are you sure Led Zep wasn't at Convention Hall? In
any event, that fine memory still seems an inadequate reason to keep
ourselves shackled to the past. They didn't stay together after Bonzo
died. Neither did the Casino.

The spot where the City of Asbury Park will be
locating their public inf. office was the actual spot where Madame Marie was
located when the song was written. The new owners of the Asbury Park oceanfront
saved the portable box which is a falacy. They haven't a clue about the history.
I hope theCity capitaliseson the space. I'm sorry your life
experiences on the boardwalk were not pleasant when you were a kid. In the 50's
and 60's, Asbury was our daycare center. An incredible music scene had developed
and the excitement was thrilling. Besides the ocean and beach, tell me what
Asbury Park has going for it today that is going to bring jobs and people to the
boardwalk and City in general. It is my belief that music history should be
savedabove all historic initiatives! The Stone Pony couldn't remotely
survive w/o the incredible music history. Aside from the many shows in the
Casino that you don't know about and any music history, the building is unique,
especially the carousal house.

Ask Rick about Led Zep.
Louis Navarette once floated the idea of hosting a
world-wide a archetecture comptetition to determine what group could
come up with the most wonderful design of a building where the Casino
now stands. The thought was to invite the most masterful
archetects on the globe, and raise money for a substantial prize for
the winner. We would get great publicity and a world-class place to
build in that spot.

And who was going to build and finance this
world class "spot?" If it was such a brilliant plan, it would have happened?

Unfortunately the nostalgia nazi, pin-ball piners and
carosel groupies convinced Fishman that the Casino should be saved for
"historical" reasons, when in reality that building fails every
 reasonable test for historical importance.

Okay, you've got my attention. Why don't you
call me a music nazi, I'd like that better. Could you explain these tests you
have conducted? I might change my mind if they are reasonable. There is plenty
of land for many world class plans. Where are the plans? I have no doubt in my
mind that the NJMHOF would succeed in the Casino and be world class. Actually I
think we could someday be the envy of music museums/music venues.

And Skippy thinks I lack vision. Sheesh!
Have fun in your nasty old Casino instead of the world class
building that could have been there. Your side won.
PS - good luck with the NJ Music Hall of fame. I'm a fan of the
idea.

In any event, we are moving forward w/ exciting
plans and events around the State of N.J... Thanks!

Did anyone notice how somebody tried to make the north entrance door look
like a break- in hanging off the hinges? I wouldn't doubt they open a flea
market in the Casino, that's the mentality. Maybe give funhouse tours
through the carousal room? Sell bricks that fall in the nets? Possibilities
are endless. The HoJo Hotel is fast approaching the condition of the ice
rink. What is that stuff coming down the wall on the boardwalk @ 5th Avenue?
You think there will be any shows this year in the bandshell? Give forklift
rides to enter. Get some rockers up there and they'll bring down the house.

Catching up on the forum. Had a crowd down to AP this weekend. They
had to listen to my bitching about Fishman et al. You've said it
all. There were crowds on the bw which was good to see and plenty of
people were walking through the casino, even as early as 7 AM all
weekend. I noticed the city loosened the regs on the bw and at least
for this weekend, allowed bikes and dogs on the bw. I guess that's
good for now at least for the bike rental place. They alos allowed
people on on beach without badges at the beaches without lifeguards.
When I asked Danny (4th Ave gate) about the bikes and dogs (and how
come he didn;t chase me and my dog at 7 AM) he said there is a new
sheriff in town and his name is I don't give a f$ck. He repeated
it again just in case I didn;t hear him.

I was so lazy that I drove and parked three days in a row in front
of hojo's. I would like to give credit where credit is due, but
we're all correct; this is not how you do things. Walking there on
the Ocean Ave side you trip over the temporary fencing. For a moment
I thought I was at an Israeli beachfront resort that had sporadic
homicide bombings in the past few days. What we see now we should
have seen the first season after the MOU and the approval of the
deal. We had to wait 3 years for this? There would be plenty of
approbations if this was 3 years ago, but it is not. It is
unacceptable. We should see the nearing of the permanent pavillions
by this time (I know Skip, this probably is permanent as long as we
 have Fishman).

As for the casino. Great minds think alike. I had to stop myself
from staging an accident just to bankrupt Asbury Partners. As I said
to my guests, this development is so easy that my kids to do it and
succeed. Unless our city council acts we will see the same snail's
pace and half-assed performance. Hopefully, it will eventually get
done. Those who tried to quiet us critics will say I told you so.
They're wrong. The pavillions should be done, or substantially done
by now. As it now stands, we don't even have a plan or schedule. At
least not one that has been made public. Anyone notice that there
are benches on only half of the bw? The bw, while better than it
was, looks like a bunch of teenagers are doing it. I saw a kid
selling homemade lemonade on the bw, I was wondering if he was going
to be arrested for violating Fishman's vendor rights. Maybe he was a
 relative.

Why was New York City so worried about lawsuits from 9/11 ?If
 something
happens to a tourist or person in Asbury Park whether or not it's property
owned by Asbury Partners, I would have to believe that the city would be
named in a lawsuit as well. People sue everybody even remotely related to
things and there is a good point to be made that the City should make sure
that people living and visiting the area be kept safe. That's why you
 have
things like building inspections and code restrictions.

There is something very, very wrong here. The pavillions that I saw
yesterday were not in good shape and the one with Hojos was in shape far
beyond what I would expect would condemn a building on Cookman Ave. Do
 they
have different restrictions on the oceanfront than in the downtown
 district?

[AsburyPark] New Jersey Music Hall of Fame/Asbury Park

Thank you everyone who attended our press reception
@ the Stone Pony on May 16th. A big thanks to Nancy Byrne, the New Jersey State
Director of Tourism for all her support and words of encouragement. The
resoundingconsensus is that Asbury Park deserves to be
"the" destination for music tourism in New Jersey and the
permanent location of the New Jersey Music Hall of Fame.

We appreciate Epic recording artist Val Emmich for
the excellent entertainment and the representatives from the City of Asbury Park

There is a big problem trying to save the ice rink portion of the Casino.
The supports and deck are beyond hope. Many years of ocean pounding before

In any event, the raising of private funds has to be a parallel
route. You can't offer that right away. You have to use the other
means I suggested. The city, if it wanted to, could turn up the heat
very high on APartners. Private citizens should also consider a
lawsuit as well. All that makes negotiations to afford public rights
and assitance in restoration more palatable. There is still the
issue of the easement through the Casino. Isn't there a legal
obligation to open it? We can sue for that. That requires
renovation, which in turn must be done to state standards.
