I do agree with Glenn's suggestion that
posting a list of all of the children's interests here would be
a good
 idea.

A 7th grade boy I know would really like to attend the Marine Science
Academy in Sandy Hook when he enters high school. I am looking for
someone who could just tutor him in general now and/or maybe help
prepare him for the entrance exam next year.

Call my dad at Monmouth U- marine bio professor for the past 100
years. He did alot for the marine science lab there and if the kid is
willing to listen, he'll talk all day. All the school has to is call
the U, him, or President Gaffney of the U who, since he's an ex
admirial, is pushing the Marine labs at Sandy Hook. That's about as
much as I know about it.

Kids at MU have to volunteer etc.

There's a great resource a couple miles away.

Whoa Mario! That's not at all what I meant. Just thought I would
start the post a little light-heartedly. Sorry if I offended
anyone.

I do know that specific requests for help posted to these boards
generally
 get a good response.

And, to cop a phrase from post # 44070, you could have simply
posted a
 request for volunteers
without taking a stab at those who post more frequently here,
without being judgmental about how they spend their time, and
without making assumptions about what they do or don't do during
their spare
 time.

Besides always needing volunteers to help kids with homework at
Holy
Spirit's After-School program, I would like to try and match some
adults from the community up with certain kids to fulfill some
 specific requests and needs.

 Here are some examples

I have one little girl that would learn how to play the
keyboard.
Any musicians out there that could spare some time? She received
a
 small keyboard for her birthday.

There are, of course, many other cases. I know volunteering can
sometimes be an intimidating commitment to get involved with.
These
kids already attend Holy Spirit's after-school program so the
venue
is there and we can work out a schedule that completely suits you.

Hope to hear from some of you. Feel free to let me know if you
have
any specific talents that you would like to share.

OK
It sounded like another scolding about the missionary position.

[AsburyPark] Re: New Year's Resolutions

2009-01-11 Thread dapawprint
Hi Kerri,

As always, I am impressed by your dedication to the kids of Asbury
Park. Changing a city does not come from the hands of developers, it
comes from the dedication and work of those who love where they grew
up and their desire to make a difference.

I am too far away to mentor in person, however, that has not stopped
me yet from caring about the kids in Asbury Park.

Please contact me, especially with regard to your musician. Mr.
Marine science has a great career ahead of him, if you can find a way
for me to help, I will, I don't know all about sealife, but I do have
some experience.

This is a honorable effort. I am sure that you have aspiring
journalists, biologists, artists, historians, preservationists,
scientists and electronic specialists under tow. I am only naming a
few.

I encourage you to compile a list of all of the childrens interests
and share them in this forum. This group might seem like a
collection of oddities, but there is a LOT of knowledge here. I
agree with you that sharing knowledge with our successors can make a
huge difference.

Thank you, Kerri for the good that you do.

Glenn
