Workers laid off from their jobs at a factory have occupied the building and are demanding assurances they'll get severance and vacation pay that they say they are owed.
About 200 employees of Republic Windows and Doors began their sit-in Friday, the last scheduled day of the plant's operation. Leah Fried, an organizer with the United Electrical Workers, said the Chicago-based vinyl window manufacturer failed to give 60 days' notice required by law before shutting down. ....... "We're doing something we haven't since the 1930s, so we're trying to make it work," Fried said. -------------------- I'll relate it to AP. There sued to be a company up the end of sunset ave (we called it the sand hills) called Seal-o-matic industries. They made vinyl windows. Great building. I think I did a few houses with their windows (had to get a commercial account). Great co. He had to close down a few years or more ago because he couldn't compete with the imports and even make a window for what HD was selling them for. Why? They were/are imported from Mexico or China. And bringing it to AP - there were a few emps from AP working there. You might not realize, but behind Wegs there is a nice little community of warehousing and whats left of some local manufacturing. So how will OB solve the issue of manufacturing? A friend of mine closed down a plant he had and laid off 10 people a few years ago. Why? With a little help - he was convinced that he could put his CAD drawings of parts he needed to assemble a product on an Internet site ... and receive bids to make a screw, a panel etc from aNYWHERE in the world, and have it shipped here. All QC etc the same, but about 1/5 of the price. SO it enabled him to lay off machinists, engineers and more - and it kept him afloat to a point where he can at least keep some guys working. Like some analyst said the other day - "there's just to many people... and not enough work..." Probably one of the biggest increase in jobs created in AP since redevelopment kicked off - bartenders. Mario can write the headline with Dan providing the stats. ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
