Second Annual Report on Hindu Human Rights Released on Capitol Hill www.hinduamericanfoundation.org WASHINGTON, D.C., June 27, 2006: The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) held a press conference today on Capitol Hill to release its much anticipated second annual report on the status of human rights of Hindus in South Asia, Afghanistan and Fiji. Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), senior ranking member of the House
International Relations Committee, co-hosted the press conference held in the Rayburn House Building. In her remarks, Ros-Lehtinen expressed serious concern over the facts presented in the human rights report and welcomed the document as a crucial resource.A House resolution calling attention to human rights violations against Hindus prompted by, among other things, the HAF report, is being prepared and the congresswoman is expected to deliver a separate floor statement highlighting human rights violations that are particularly severe in Bangladesh."The second annual report on Hindu human rights is an objective compi lation from reports by credible human rights groups of the genocide, ethnic cleansing, terrorism, and discriminatory laws that Hindus face everyday in parts of South Asia and beyond," said Ishani Chowdhury, Executive Director of HAF. "This report documents a humanitarian tragedy that fills an important void existing in reports by both
governments and other human rights organizations." The 105-page document is entitled "Hindus in South Asia the Diaspora: A Survey of Human Rights (2005)". The report has garnered a broad array of endorsements from several members of Congress, various academics and human rights and religious leaders of diverse faiths."By documenting human rights violations against Hindus in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Fiji and the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, the Hindu American Foundation continues to raise global awareness of these abuses," said Congressman Joseph Crowley (D-NY), as he joined Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Jo e Wilson (R-SC), Jim Ramstad (R-MN) and many other members of the U.S. Congress whose endorsements of the report continue to be received daily at HAF offices in Washington, D.C. The 2005 report individually documents over 500 incidents of murder, arson, rape, desecration of temples, usurpation of property and other forms of
violence against Hindus over a single year in Bangladesh. The report confirms a continuous rise in such attacks since the 2001 general election brought the Bangladesh National Party to power in coalition with Islamist political organizations. In 2005, according to the HAF report, Pakistan witnessed a spate of Hindu temple destructions, kidnappings and forced conversions of Hindu girls. Furthermore, the government of Pakistan continues a grim policy of aiding and abetting Islamist organizations recognized as terrorist groups by the U.S. State Department such as the Lashkar-e-Toiba. HAF included Fiji in the 2005 report as part of its long-term goal of highlighting human rights abuses against Hindus in the diaspora beyond South Asia. Despite comprising 38% of the island nation's population, Hindus and their r eligious institutions are routinely attacked in Fiji. The heavily influential Methodist Church there has called for conversions of Hindus and establishment of a
Christian state."Everyone who is concerned with obtaining the necessary human rights and privileges for people of all religions should be indebted to the Hindu American Foundation for bringing into the light the serious discriminatory practices and unacceptable behavior which in any way makes for insensitive treatment of Hindus and their faith," said Ernest Weiner, Executive Director of the Northern California Region of the American Jewish Committee. After reviewing the report, Iftekhar Hai, President of United Muslims of America Interfaith Alliance condemned extremist violence and said, "It gives me great pain to note that extremist Muslims, a tiny minority, are unleashing terror on our Hindu brothers and sisters." Rabbi Abraham Cooper, Associate Dean and co-founder of the Simon Wi esenthal Center, a widely respected international human rights organization, heaped similar praise on HAF. "The Simon Wiesenthal Center welcomes this report which will
help the international community and non-governmental organizations to have a broader understanding of the human rights situation in that important region of the world.

Is this a statement from a white supremacist? Isn't this blatant racial profiling?I looked at her self portrait - two days ago - when I was cleaning my room : (I did it finally today with vacuum cleaner and throwing all the clothes in the sun -Indian style -UV rays to kills bugs etc) since I have been bitten by bugs on arms and legs -and itch all over even at night. Might be dust mites, which I cannot see but crawl all

Here I cannot do that. Her self portrait is something no Indian girl can make : an oval head slanting, straight shoulder-length red hair (which ends in sharp curls) and bright blue eyes and a wide smiley mouth. No Indian girl can boast of red hair and blue eyes. She can say and did" You are bown, black and peach and I am white, pink and peach."It would be shocking to most in US - only if she had not called it simply becos thats true and just that. Also , it helps that she is just five (5) years old. Will be joining kindergarten nextyear.Actually, I was reading aloud her book (for the first time) at her nap time at 2pm yesterday -when all kids are expected to sleep. He book was "Goose on the Loose" and this goose led
to white and black. I was explaining that goose is different from a duck - it is not a female duck and swan is not a male duck -but different kinds of ducks just like different kinds of dogs and cats -some big , some small, some with pointed ears , some with drooping ones. She got the idea and said what she said. Hi Umesh

The fact that you took exception to a 5-year old's comment makes me wonder maybe IT was you who is thinking being brown etc is inferior or being white is superior.

If in your own mind, had you thought being brown is superior, then maybe you wouldn't have minded. :-)

Just my thoughts

Re: [Assam] Skytrain

2006-06-30 Thread umesh sharma
Great engg feat. Being a plateau helps -for Tibet-average level land is already 4000m high. In India 5,000m (17,000 feet) would be on a mountain top (or side).Umeshmc mahant [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:China's Tibet railway ready for operation, with sealed cars and refrigerated tracks BEIJING (AP) - The first railway to Tibet is ready to start operation this weekend, using sealed, oxygenated cars to cope with the thin air and high-tech cooling to keep the frozen track bed stable, the Railway Ministry announced Thursday. The 33.9 billion yuan (US$4.2 billion; euro3.3 billion) rail line, which took four years to build, links Tibet's capital of Lhasa to Golmud, a small city in Qinghai province already connected
to China's vast rail network. China says the prestige project, which leaders have dreamed of realizing since the 1950's, will help economically develop the poor, restive western region and establish better trade and information links with the prosperous east. Critics say it is part of a larger campaign by Beijing to crush Tibetan culture by allowing a huge influx of Han Chinese migrants. The line will "hugely boost local development and benefit the local people,'' said Zhu Zhensheng, vice director of Railway Ministry's Tibetan Railway Office. However, he acknowledged that few ordinary Tibetans would benefit directly from the railway _ a key complaint by human rights and Tibet activists. "At first there will be not very many opportunities for Tibetans to work on the train,'' he said at a press briefing to announce details of the new service. "We hope to increase those opportunities.'' Members of
Students for a Free Tibet and pro-independence activists have been wearing black armbands in protest and say they will demonstrate outside Chinese embassies and consulates around the world this Saturday as part of a campaign called "Reject the Railway.'' "China's railway to Tibet is not meant to benefit Tibetans and is only meant to consolidate Beijing's control over the region,'' the group says on its Web site. Many Tibetans say their territory was independent when communist troops arrived in 1950 and the Dalai Lama has campaigned for autonomy to protect its culture. Beijing says Tibet has been part of China for centuries and accuses the Dalai Lama of agitating for independence. The first passenger train to use the line is to leave Beijing on Saturday night and arrive in Lhasa, the Tibetan capital, 48 hours later on Monday evening. The government says it hasn't decided whether to run daily train service, but Zhu said the maximum
daily traffic would be three trains carrying a total of 2,700 passengers each way. The railway, sometimes referred to as the "Sky Train'' in Chinese, is the world's highest, crossing mountain passes over 5,000 meters (16,500 feet) high at speeds of 100 kph (60 mph). Peru's Lima-Huancayo line claimed the highest record previously, rising to above 4,800 meters (15,748 feet). About 80 percent of the Qinghai-Tibet line is above 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) and is laid on potentially unstable permafrost, or frozen ground. To keep the permafrost stable, Chinese engineers sank pipes with cooling elements into the ground around the tracks to stabilize the embankments and ensure they stayed frozen. "It's kind of like non-electric refrigeration,'' Zhu said. Daniel Wong, a Shenzhen-based engineer who helped set up a similar cooling technology on permafrost along the Alaskan oil pipeline in the 1970's, said
the pipes likely use solar energy to power a pump and compressor that continuously cycles ammonia or some other liquid into a gas, producing cold air. "It's a very expensive system because the columns are steel and the refrigeration units have to be inspected every month,'' said Wong. "Plus if it breaks, it will sink and then you have a lot of problems.'' Zhu said that regular monitoring of the permafrost along the line over the past three years had shown that it was receding about 2 centimeters (0.79 inches) per year, a level which was "very satisfactory,'' and showed the line was stable. He added that some 120 kilometers (75 miles) of the rail line were also put on elevated bridges in spots where the permafrost was thought to be least stable. Global warming might threaten the rail line by softening the permafrost in about 50 years, but work is under way to prepare for such a possibility, Zhu said. The train
cars, manufactured by Canada's Bombardier Inc., have double-paned windows with ultraviolet filters to protect people from the sun's glare and were designed to regulate oxygen levels as the altitude changes, said Zhang Jianwei, Bombardier's China representative. Zhang said passengers who experience breathing difficulties at high altitudes can breath air with richer oxygen content provided at various locations in the coaches. There was some dispute over whether passengers would be allowed to smoke in the oxygen-enriched trains.

Ofcourse, it is the truth --although the author had to resort to stories from mother and grandmother to make her case --and found no readily available witnesses. On the other hand, she made it a point to mention that her husband: "I am of Indian descent but my husband is a blonde, blue-eyed and fiercely proud Scotsman. He was gob-smacked. I felt deflated - did the doctor really think that I would terminate the pregnancy if I was told a girl was on the way?"Does she mean that only Indians (brown skinned -who are not blonde and white) are ant-females? Is that why she chose a white husband? And is that why BBC carried the report?UmeshMalabika Brahma [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/5125810.stm All new Yahoo! Re: [Assam] Lessons for Indians from Google China

Mukul-da, every country has their censorings -like Europe has about Nazi-info. Chinese censors seem to be quite hi-tech and ready to go to extremes - Tsun Zu might have admired their attention to detail, though. Perhaps Google chief, being a Russian (born in USSR??) has a special eye for neighboring China. Is that why you like Google too -due to your Russia love?Umesh[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Umesh

It is a good story for publication in a magazine. I hear America pays well
for magazine articles. Of course you have to find out the particular type of
magazines which will buy your stuff. At one time, just for fun, I used to earn a
little money by contributing to all kinds of magazines published in
India.Naional dailies also have educational supplements and the editors of such
publications may be interested in you.

Just a thought.

Best wishes
