[Assam] CHANDAN MAHANTA'S DHEKERI SPLIT

2006-07-19 Thread Himendra Thakur

Subject: CHANDAN MAHANTA’S  DHEKERI SPLIT

To
Mr.
Rabin Deka

Dear Mr.
Deka,

I am
sorry to hear that Mr. Chandan Mahanta has insulted your mother-tongue "Kamrupi
Language" with a derogatory word "dhekeri" for which you wrote to him:

"Hello Chandan, I regret to learn that you have once again
called Kamrupi "dhekeri" which I discovered through
Googl."

I most
earnestly request you --- and all other Assamese friends --- to ignore the
opinions of Mr. Chandan Mahanta. He writes a lot, but he does not take any
responsibility about what he writes. Whenever he is in some trouble, he blames
the English language, in which he does not even know the difference between
the two words "before" & "after" --- he claimed that the "ATAN BURAGOHAIN
SAKO" would be ugly even "before" it was designed.

Contrary
to what Chandan Mahanta wrote, we the Assamese have great appreciation for our
Kamrupi language. I myself grew up in Barpeta ---the glorious centre of
Vaishnava Culture ---  and remember
those childhood days of swimming in Maranadi, climbing all kind of trees and
jumping into the Chaulkhowa River, trekking to the Kirtanghar where we
had a pet deer, staging Shrikrishna drama with my friends --- bold, outspoken,
straightforward, and very brotherly. I always miss my Barpeta days!! Every
language has different accents in different areas --- and we live with
respect "shraddha" to each other.

To talk
in a derogatory way about others by stereotyping everybody,  and to stress
on a “brotherhood” only “after” conversion,  is typical to Islam, where
conversion is a basic necessity.

In
Hinduism, “shraddha” (mutual respect)
is an essential trait, and there is NO conversion: “ayam nija para iva iti gananam
laghuchetasa, udaracharitanam basudha eva kutumbakam” [ All these “mine”
“yours” calculations are for light-minded people. For a broad-minded person, the
entire world is a family.]

By
insulting you with the word “dhekeri”, Mr. Chandan Mahanta has displayed his
commitment to Islam, which is very dangerous to the Assamese, a small population
facing extinction in the face of unabated Islamic infiltration from
Bangladesh.

I appeal
to my Assamese friends to stick together, and ignore the divisive forces that
the enemy is using to weaken us. We must look into our hearts, read our history,
regain our self-confidence, and make a world safe and beautiful for our
children.

With the
best wishes,
Himendra

Mr. Rabin Deka:
Dear Mr. Deka,
I am a contemporary of Mr.
Chandan Mahanta's eldest brother Mukul Mahanta, studying at the same time at IIT
Kharagpur. I am afraid that the divisive & stereotyping writings of the
Mahanta brothers are causing great harm to the Assamese, who need unequivocal
unity for survival in the teeth of foreign infiltration from Bangladesh. We the
Assamese must be careful against these divisive tendencies that weaken us.
With the best wishes,
Himendra Barthakur

Accordingto me:1) already an initiative (main trunk) is
going on. We can write modulesor branches2) has some significance to the society and our NE in particular.3) Already existing code base should be well documented and easy tounderstand. Most open source codes r extremely well written and Full ofknowledge. The Assamese/Manipuri Language support is a perfect example. How to find projects and support:The answer is google google and google. and of course google groupsHow to get ideas1) Discussion.and individual ideasIn our everyday life we do feel a need of things..like how good itwould have been if a simple sms would have told us which blood bank has O-blood available at this point of time..So this needs translates into aproject idea2) Talking to the local industry and businessSome of things I could think of1) LocalizationIn the simplest of words this is customizing already existingproducts for our local needsa) Assamese

Integrated Hospitalmanagement. There are lot of open source projects available for such things. We cancustomize it for say Blood Banks in guwahati. The end product may be that we can enquire availability of O- blood inthe area. It will be modularised into1) GUI programming (java applet etc)2) Database---above for CS students3) networking4) GSM---for EE studentsAll government departments , lot of NGOs .. all need

Software companies charge heftily..students can do it for a small fee===Education1) LIbrary managementOne of the most repeated projects in the world..stillsignificant2) Software for primary educationText books were very boring in my time and they are nobetter now.. We can have interactive game based softwares (open sourceavailable)Gameing programming is one of the hottest fields now.. Such a thingin your resume will take you to new heights=Mechanical/Civil Engineering studentsThe open source CAD is still underdeveloped . All cad softwaresare commertial and highly priced. Why dont u modify the open source and savemoney for the college. There is a scope for lot of work+ to earn
reputaioninternationally..www.ribbonsoft.com/qcad.html=ECE EnT studentsE-Cad=CS/EE studentsManager for My SqlGui front end for popular command line programs ( how about inassamese!)Hell lot of work can be donein audio video synthasis. its a patent goldmine.. u hit upon something , uturn a millionaire..===Hi tech thing:1) contribute to RFCs, Infiniband standard...the list goes on...

Yes,two separate but equal events ( this is America you know?)
held. One in the San Francisco Bay area by them upstart younger folks
( younger than my generation that is) -- their first. And another held
at Niagara Falls, by the experienced, organized etc. etc. 'true'
representatives of Markhowa Bhodro Xomaaj. ( Pardon me for my
propensity for using such divisive language to describe our community!
You know me, the indiscriminate flame-thrower.) I suspect you expected
no less.

We attended the one organized by the upstarts. Why? For more than
one reason. But be that as it may, you can see the proceedings of the
SF Bay area meet, look up :
http://www.assamesegettogether2006.org/newhomeindex.php. We
went in force, the whole family and a bunch of our American ( I mean
non-immigrant/non-desi) friends.

We enjoyed it thoroughly. The younger folks did a bang-up job. I
took a much needed course on Bihu dancing to the delight of our young
friends, one of whom told our children, who were away at the city,
that their geezer father was the 'star of the show'. I am going to
have a talk with this brat when I see her next time. I get no
respect!

One of the real stars of the meet was 93 year old Sjt. Das, PhD
of Boston ( I forget his first name) who must be the oldest living
Oxomiya in these shores  and his lovely wife ( forget her name
too) . He came to study in the USA in 1939, probably one of the first;
served in the US Army in World War II, was sent to Assam. The couple
was an absolute delight to converse with. Full of interesting
anecdotes and piece of living history. I wished I had more time to
spend with them. Turns out he played tennis with my late father-in-law
at Cotton College and was a star player himself. It was a delight to
meet Mr. and Mrs, Debajit Chaliha too, whom I knew from the days when
he was the Principal at JEC, and I spent time in the campus with my
older brother during summer holidays.

It was a lot of fun. We had a great time. There were no
acrimonious political shenanigans to contend with. Only concern was
when I accosted the unofficial archivist and Mohapuruxia censor all
combined in one, who was there bright and early, no doubt to check if
anyone was desecrating Xonkordeu's name or legacy, or if there were
any headless mannequins to debase Oxomiya womanhood. But nothing
untoward came about from what I can tell. And since no one has been
charged on the Internet, not even cattle-rustlers, with hurting
Mahapuruxia sentiments, I hope the organizers can relax, for the
moment anyway.

Well, that's all for today. I will now take questions, but will
respond only  if and when I get a chance :-).

Best.

All the Assamese in USA had picnic in different places
in the 4th of July week-end. I heard one big picnic
was in Niagra Falls, New York and another in San
Fransisco, California. Assamese are in large numbers
in USA, so they could find a place where all could
have been accomodated. Niagra Falls picnic was
supposed to be in New Orleans. After the hurricane,
they thought of joining the group in SF, but later on
they thought to eat dinner separetly in NF.

Terror Network: The Bangladesh Link

http://www.zeenews.com/znnew/articles.asp?aid=309881&sid=ZNS

By: Arunava Biswas
Ever since its independence from Pakistan in December 1971, Bangladesh and India have been locked in a love-hate relationship. India has never ever viewed Bangladesh in an adversarial perspective. Not even for reasons of domestic politics, but a section of the Bangladesh polity has made anti-Indian stances a plank to gain political mileage.
Till the late 1990s, India`s main concerns with Bangladesh involved the massive illegal migration, which among other things radically changed the demography of neighbouring Indian states like Assam, and the fact that anti-government rebels in the Northeast states found refuge on Bangladeshi soil.
Since the last few years, it came to light that ISI and various militant organisations based in Pakistan are using Bangladesh as a transit point for pushing terrorists into India. Indian security agencies have flight details and details of armed training camps in the neighbouring country.
The arrest of several Bangladeshi nationals in connection with the October 29 Delhi blasts only lends credence to the intelligence agencies` suspicions.
Anti-terrorist officers involved in the hunt for the Mumbai bombers travelled to Tripura to question 11 men from the port city who were said to have been caught trying to cross back into Bangladesh. The men are believed to be militant members of the outlawed Student Islamic Movement of India, which police allege helped in the bomb plot.
The role of Bangladesh-based terrorist groups like Harkut-ul-Jehadi Islami (HuJI) that was also under the scanner during the Varanasi attacks, has come under sharp scrutiny yet again. With the tightening of security on the Pakistan border, export of terror from Bangladesh has become a reality, and the extension of the terror network to other parts of the country is a potential threat to India`s security.
It also came to be known that Bangladeshi nationals, who are part of the terrorist organisation, have been asked to illegally enter India and set up base in different parts of the country. They then provide safe hideouts and logistical support to terrorists to act as couriers of explosives and transact in hawala activities for them. This new phenomenon is called 'Sleeper Cells'.
Post 9/11 and the United States-led War on Terror, many fundamentalist outfits under the American scanner found Bangladesh an easy country to disappear into. The huge amount of foreign aid flowing into the country also made money laundering relatively easy.
Charities in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan with al Qaeda connections are among the major donors to Bangladeshi NGOs, and a large chunk of that money is used to fund madrassas, which spawn willing recruits to the jehadi cause.
The nexus between Pakistani and Bangladeshi intelligence is hardly new. Several activists of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom arrested in India admitted that batches of their cadres were flown to Pakistan from Dhaka for training by the ISI.
Before Bangladesh`s independence, Mizo and Naga rebels were trained and sheltered in the Chittagong Hill tracts by the Pakistan Army. There were also violent spats over patches of the 4,096-kilometre border, 180 km of which is marked by rivers that keep changing their course.
The role of Bangladesh government The initial gratitude over India`s assistance to the Mukti Bahini, the guerrilla force, which fought the Pakistan Army, quickly turned into distrust in Dhaka. This came to limelight particularly after Generals Zia-ur Rehman (1975 to 1981) and Hossain Mohammad Ershad (1982 to 1990) wooed the fundamentalist, anti-independence and pro-Pakistan lobby to retain their grip on power.
Chief among these pro-Pakistan organisations was the Jaamat-e-Islami, which is part of the four-party alliance currently in power. Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Khaleda Zia leads the ruling coalition.
In 2001, Khaleda Zia returned to power for the second time on an essentially anti-India platform, her predecessor Hasina Wajed whose late father Sheikh Mujibur Rehman was independent Bangaldesh`s first President and her Awami League were tagged as pro-India.
The presence of the pro-Pakistan Jaamat and Islami Oikya Jote in Khaldea Zia`s government ensured that the Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka became an 'ISI den'.
The ISI started re-growing its roots in Dhaka during Khaleda`s earlier stint, from 1991 to 1996. The rapid rise in fundamentalism in Bangladesh and its growing nexus with Pakistan`s ISI has added to India`s concerns over its eastern neighbour.
The crackdown on minorities by the ruling coalition`s goons soon after it assumed power in 2001 led to a spike in migration to India, and officials note that these migrants comprised not just Hindus and Christians fleeing persecution, but also Muslim activists of the Opposition Awami League, who were being targetted by the ruling elite.
