Re: [Assam] IE: UK's straight Green Card program for skilled workers

2008-03-31 Thread umesh sharma
i didn't qualify even if I put my salary as US $60,000 in the US but if someone
is below 30 years of age then it can work. Earlier I tried with a Harvard MBA
and salary more than 40,000 pounds (about US$ 80,000) and got 155 points
compared to needed 75 points.

a Harvard MBA itself earns you 75 points!! - you don't need anything else.

For someone in India it seems one needs about Rs 800,000 per year (US$ 20,000)
to equal the highest salary bracket (above 40,000 pounds or US$80,000) - as per
the website's qualifications. If you have MBA from a top US or European Univ
then extra points.

I had gone to Cherry Blossom fest in DC with an old roommate of mine and was
told me that he was thinking of going to work in the UK after working for 4
years in the US. The reason he told me was that in the UK if you get work
visa/permit then after 5 years of being on that visa you become a permanent
resident/Green Car staright away. And you don't need an employer to sposor you
to get the work visa - just based on getting enough points -- based on your
age, educational qualifications and earning power. Surprisingly the website has
extra points if you have an MBA from a top univ --esp if degree is from the UK.

Earning power requirement is different for different countries - for example if
you earn $60,000 per year in the US it would get you same points as would a
salary of Rs600,000 ($15,000) in India. Quite remarkable - it is quite similar
to Canadian system. Australia has a similar system - he told me.

Surprisingly today is this new article that the requirement has been changed a
bit - on the UK work visa u can work initially for 3 years instead of 2 as
previously allowed.

I think this has been happening all along in Assam. A few years back I came
across farmers in Kharupetia allowing their tomato crop to rot because the
price they were fetching in the nearby market would not even meet their
transportation cost to the market.
As far as I remember, Assam Unnati Sabha need not worry since they have already
contracted their production to a buyer at a predetermined rate. For any one
starting a new business, that is the most sensible thing to do.State
intervention is the only answer, but how it is to be done is again a matter
that can be decided by in depth going into the problem. Unless the power
situation improves, cold storage may not be the solution. Also, simply having
the cold storage may not be adequate, unless we have the total linkages in

   Hello fellow IEPers,

I am currently working on the Global Campaign for Education’s (GCE) Action
Week 2008. The GCE was founded in 1999 and brings together major
nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and teachers' unions in more than 150
countries to promote access to education as a basic human right. In early 2003,
a U.S. Chapter of the Global Campaign for Education was formed to allow those
in the United States to do their part in this global effort to ensure universal
quality education for all children. I invite those of you who are working with
or close to teachers and/or classrooms in the US to spread the word about this
event. For those of you who are posted outside the US, please check out the
international GCE website to find and participate in Action Week activities in
your own country:

Every year the GCE holds Global Action Week. The Action Week advocates for
the 72 million children across the globe currently denied access to primary
education and the 226 million more who are denied a quality basic or secondary
education. Every year during Action Week, more than one hundred national
chapters around the world coordinate to raise awareness about this issue,
encourage young people to get involved, and coordinate powerful actions and
requests of world leaders. In the past, Angelina Jolie, Kofi Annan and Mia Hamm
have headlined Action Week in the US.

Below is the blurb we are sending out to schools and organizations about
getting involved in this year’s Action Week activities. Even if you don’t work
directly with classrooms, it would be great if people could help spread the
word by posting to websites or forwarding to email lists. If you work for an
organization that would be interesting in joining the Global Campaign for
Education email me and we can work out the details.

Check out the website (www.campaignforeducationusa.org/actionweek) and email
if you have any questions.

  Thanks, Tanya

  Blurb:

Global Campaign for Education, Global Action Week 2008 – 5 million young
people taking part!

Every year the Global Campaign for Education (GCE) organizes Global Action
Week to raise awareness of the plight of the 72 million children and 226
million young people who are denied a quality basic or secondary education
around the world. These children miss out on the chance that an education gives
them in life. The U.S. Chapter of the GCE is a broad-based coalition of more
than 30 non-profit organizations, teachers unions, foundations and child
advocacy groups that promote the cause of universal basic education in the
world’s poorest nations. This year the GCE is organizing a global lesson about
the need to ensure a quality education for all children – and in doing so, beat
the Guinness World Record for the World's Largest Simultaneous lesson on April
23rd at 11am EST (10am CST, 9am MST, or 8am PST). This activity will attempt to
break the previous Guinness World Record set by the GCE in 2003. It is also an
exciting opportunity to advocate for the education of the
world’s poorest children by connecting with fellow young people worldwide
–including 5 million young people planning on taking part in Latin America,
Asia, Africa, the Pacific and Europe. Projected participants include 100,000
students in the UK, one-quarter of the children in Denmark, and an amazing one
million young people in Bangladesh. The US Chapter of GCE would like the US to
match this high-level of participation and raise awareness about the importance
of the Education For All Act of 2007. Being part of the World’s Biggest Lesson
is easy—it will only take 30 minutes. To register for the event, download your
lesson plan and other materials, and to learn more about the issue of education
for all, please check out the GCE-US website at:

Re: [Assam] Potatoeconomics of Assam

2008-03-31 Thread uttam borthakur
I am not a leader sir! (So cannot be looter of the either side!)

I shall choose to wait for the apocalypse to happen by itself (with my
middle-class mentality). And if someone brings about the day of reckoning, on
getting the information, I shall join the winning side with glee:-). With due
respect sir, I would have been happier that you with your impeccable
credentials would concentrate on the content of the first part than on the
aside in the last part of my mail.

You are welcome.

But I think the 'artist' was maybe trying to show Obama and Hillary could
actually form a team.
Well, maybe not as close as Radha-Krishna.
