[Assam] NCP blames Pradyut for missing Turung couple
NCP blames Pradyut for missing Turung couple By A Staff Reporter Assam Tribune nbsp;GUWAHATI, June 7 – The State unit of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), a partner of the ruling UPA at the Centre, today demanded steps to trace out its leader Prasanna Turung and his wife Kamai Turung within the next 15 days. It has also demanded resignation of Power Minister Pradyut Bardoloi in this connection. The Turung couple is missing since April 8, 2007. Addressing a press conference here today at the State headquarters of the party, NCP State president Dhirendra Dev Adhikary, it’s chief spokesperson Dilip Kumar Hazarika and general secretaries Ramen Barthakur and Akshay Rajkhowa expressed the doubt that there might be a political conspiracy behind the missing Turung couple. The inaction of the State Government on the matter has provided the ground for such a doubt, they said. Prasanna Turung was the NCP candidate for the Margherita Legislative Assembly Constituency during the 2006 Assembly elections, while his wife was the secretary of the State youth wing of the party. Moreover, they were also leaders of the struggle for Tirap autonomous region. Both of them were abducted on April 8, 2007. According to the NCP State wing office-bearers, Power Minister Pradyut Bordoloi, who represents Margherita Constituency in the State Assembly, was also not above board in this case. He had neither placed the demand for a CBI inquiry into the incident before the Chief Minister nor offered to resign for his failure to trace out the missing couple for the past about 14 months, they said. The State Government has so far not taken any effective step to find them out despite various organisations demanding such steps. Moreover, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi also failed to grant an appointment to the NCP State president in this connection, alleged the State NCP office bearers. In case of the failure of the State Government to find out the Turung couple within the next 15 days, the NCP State wing will approach Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh with the demand for a CBI inquiry into the case, said the State NCP office bearers. ___ assam mailing list assam@assamnet.org http://assamnet.org/mailman/listinfo/assam_assamnet.org
[Assam] Many criminals in Tarun Gogoi ministry
Gogoi patronising criminals: Opp By A Staff Reporter Assam Tribune GUWAHATI, June 7 – Opposition parties today came down heavily against the Congress-led Government in the State alleging that it had become the resort of criminals. A number of criminals are there in the Gogoi Ministry, they alleged and reiterated their demand for resignation of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. They alleged that Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had been patronising these criminals and hence these persons had been indulging in misdeeds. Addressing a press conference here this afternoon, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Brindaban Goswmai alleged that at the instance of the Chief Minister some of his Ministerial colleagues were involved in a mudslinging campaign to malign the image of the Opposition parties. This has been done with the intention to divert people’s attention from the Ripun Bora episode, Goswami said. He also demanded an explanation from the Chief Minister on the Government’s affidavit in opposition before the Gauhati High Court to the demand for a CBI enquiry into the Daniel Topno murder case. Besides, the Chief Minister should also clarify his Government’s stand on the plea of the wife of Late Manabendra Sarma for a CBI enquiry into the case related to her husband’s murder, Goswami said referring to her interview to a private TV channel. Reiterating his party’s demand for resignation of the Chief Minister on the ground of his patronising criminals, Goswami also refuted the allegations of the Congress that AGP had also been patronising criminals. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State vice president Palit Bora has also demanded a white paper from the State Government on the investigations into the incidents of murder of Pratul Deb, Manabendra Sarma and Parag Das. Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF) has alleged that since the second term of Hiteswar Saikia as the Chief Minister of the State, the Congress has been patronising criminals and during the seven years of Tarun Gogoi in power this practice has become more discernable. Addressing a pres conference here today, AUDF working president HRA Choudhury also demanded an explanation from Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi as to why he was dropped from the PV Narasimha Rao Ministry. Choudhury said that Ministers like Himanta Biswa Sarma, Gautam Roy and Rockybul Hussain were accused of many criminal activities. While a case diary relating to Himanta Biswa Sarma is missing, Gutam Roy is yet to be cleared in the Pratul Deb murder case. On the other hand, Rockybul Hussain is yet to convince the people of his non-involvement in the rhino poaching cases, Choudhury said and demanded CBI enquiry into all the cases involving the Congress Ministers. State Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha president Dilip Saikia demanded at a press conference resignation of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and also requested the President of India to suspend the Gogoi Ministry. Alleging that the Government under Gogoi’s stewardship had become a den of criminals, Saikia demanded CBI enquiry into the all the criminal cases involving Himata Biswa Sarma, Pramila Rani Brahma, Bharat Narah, Rockybul Hussain and Dr Bhumidhar Barman. ___ assam mailing list assam@assamnet.org http://assamnet.org/mailman/listinfo/assam_assamnet.org

[Assam] UGC plans to set up 30 new universities
UGC plans to set up 30 new universities Jun 8 Mega expansion of the education sector is in the offing with moves to establish 30 universities, including some with world-class standards. This also entails enhancement of the infrastructure of existing institutions during the 11th Plan. The action plan prepared by the University Grants Commission, UGC, envisages to increase the gross enrolment ratio, GER, the percentage of youths in the age group of 18-23 in higher education from the present 10 per cent to 15 by 2012. UGC chairman Prof Sukhadeo Thorat said in New Delhi, that apart from the 30 new universities, there is plan to set up 370 colleges in districts where the GER is lower than the all India average. He said that for the proposed 16 Central universities, concept paper and draft bill has been ready. Similarly for the 14 world class universities, a committee has been set up to prepare concept paper and the draft bill. The UGC has earmarked 870 crore rupees for expanding the infrastructure in the existing over 20 Central universities for implementing 27 per cent OBC quota, which has been given the go-ahead by the Supreme Court. This assumes significance in view of the Knowledge Commission saying that there is a need to set up 1500 universities to make India a knowledge society. http://www.newsonair.com/news.asp?cat=Nationalid=NN2136 - Messenger blocked? The results are not very encouraging. In order to generate energy from wind there has to be a uniform wind velocity throughout the year with minimum deviation. In the above stations and possibly throughout NE the wind velocity is erratic and reaches peak velocity for a limited number of daysnbsp;from Jan to March/April. Thereafter, it slowly reduces. [Assam] The Demise of Assaamese Language in America
Dear KJD Thanks for forwarding the article. I would comment on this later. Rajen Kokaideu - Original Message - From: kamal deka To: Rajen Ajanta Barua Sent: Sunday, June 08, 2008 9:04 AM Subject: Letter to the Editor. Rajen kokaidew, The following letter appeared in today's on-line edition of The Sentinel.I tried twice to forward the same to the assamnet. It didn't go through.Could you forward the letter to the net ? Your thoughtful comment will be appreciated KJD The Demise of Asomiya Language in America Half of the world's 6,000 languages, as estimated by the United Nations, will go the way of the dinosaurs in less than a century. In fact one falls out of use about every two weeks. Usually, the life of a language comes to an end when the speakers of the language stop speaking it for any reason. The Asomiya language in the USA has already been put to sleep by the Asomiyas themselves, which is the product of parental failure to inculcate a sense of pride in our ancient culture and language. After all, diet and dialect are perhaps the emblems of any society. The abdication of the Asomiya parents makes it easy for the Asomiya children here in America to follow the path of least resistance by imitating their American peers. The result : most of the Asomiyas, belonging to the in-between generation, if not all, do not speak their mother tongue at all. It is too facile of an argument, often made by the expatriate Asomiyas, that teaching children their native language interferes with the English language development. It would, therefore, be better to focus on English than teach a language that is going to be of limited use in this country. This line of reasoning, in my opinion, does not seem to have two legs to stand for a few simple reasons. First, research consistently points to the cognitive and academic advantages of being bilingual, no matter what the second language is. But the Asomiya parents are not dissuaded by multilingual pre-schoolers reading earlier and faster than their monolingual counterparts. The young child's alloplastic mind is fertile ground for a multitude of ideas. Far from stunting mastery in English, learning another language enhances a child's ability to learn English by expanding linguistic structure and syntax. Furthermore, most children passively acquire English through ubiquitous interactions with teachers and fellow schoolmates at school, television and on the street. Conversely, they imbibe their native language only at home. Secondly, when Americans themselves have begun to realize that this land is not a melting pot but rather a rich mosaic, it is ironic that many of us still cling to the archaic philosophy of Romans in Rome. Thankfully, the Asomiyas here in America do not live in such a rigid world where they have to choose between extremes. Thirdly, there is another powerful benefit that is relevant to our children growing up here and that is in helping them a strong sense of identity which can help lead to better self-esteem and self-confidence. The Asomiya diaspora of the USA insists and claims that the foremost reason of celebrating Bihu is to transmit — and preserve — our culture to the next generation. One would fall off the chair to learn that the entire affair is conducted in English! I am at a loss to understand as to how on earth one can pass one's culture and heritage on to their progeny by merely holding Bihu function once in a year without impressing upon their children the importance of learning their own language which is the essence of any culture. In Washington DC and New York the contrast may not be so obvious but Harlem is a US slum near the riches of Manhattan. People do beg in downtown DC. DC is the crime capital of the US. C'da thanks for the article, its a good article (though not an eye opener) and Umesh, you raise some good points. One is left wondering which is worse, a country that can possibily afford to eradicate poverty within its boundaries, or a country that flaunts its riches that it can ill afford to. :) --Ram On 6/8/08, umesh sharma [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: In Washington DC and New York the contrast may not be so obvious but Harlem is a US slum near the riches of Manhattan. Re: [Assam] NYTimes.com: Inside Gate, India's Good Life; Outside, the Servants' Slums
Chandan Da Such are the reasons why I could not agree whole-heartedly with Alpana Baideo (Alpana Sarangapani) when she opined that what is Rs.10 lakh or Rs.14 lakh for a minister when middle-class of India speak in terms of crores. Some of things that sounded theoretical at one time have become too obvious with the onward march of globalisation ( net free flow of capital from periphery to the centre than the much vaunted opposite way) and I do not know whether it augurs well for the people who sing its paen. And it is now more or less accepted fact that parallel governance run in a substantial part of India with their considerable influence in other parts aggregating to about one-third of the land area. If not otherwise, it at least indicates that all is not well in the state of Bohemia. In these days of orweliian newspaek in India, it is interesting to note that someone reported about the contrast between the gated community and the serving slums. Thanks for the link. [Assam] Article about assamese language in sentinel forwarded
The Demise of Asomiya Language in America Half of the world's 6,000 languages, as estimated by the United Nations, will go the way of the dinosaurs in less than a century.
