House of Lords to focus on Assam on June 13
GUWAHATI, May 29 – Assam is *not just* a part of India’s enigmatic Orient,
it is a microcosm of the country. Assam means unparalleled, and is heavenly.
Kamakhya, the mother goddess of procreation couldn’t have settled for
anything less. Assam with her blue hills, red river, green valleys and
sparkling wetlands allure one and all, and is now poised to be India’s
gateway to South-East Asia.
On June 11 and 13 next, the Indian High Commission’s cultural wing in the
United Kingdom along with the *House of* Lords have arranged to hold an
illustrated talk in connection with launching of coffee table book Assam
published by Nanda Talukdar *Foundation* of Pub-Sarania, Guwahati, an e-mail
received here said.
To be conducted by Foundation secretary Mrinal Talukdar, the
*programme*will be followed by Bihu dance performed by a troupe from
Assam. The two-day
prestigious event is organised by Rini Kakati, NRI Co-ordinator for UK.
Ranjit Gogoi, who is a popular artiste of North-East, along with his troupe
will perform at various venues in the UK and Ireland. Ranjit has been sent
to various *countries in the world* by ICCR, including Russia, South Africa,
Seychelles, Reunion Island, Mauritius, Bhutan, Germany, Australia, *New
Zealand*, Malaysia and Indonesia.
The inauguration ceremony will be graced by Dr Christopher Young, Head of
World Heritage and *International Policy*, Lord Adom Patel of Blackburn,
Lord Dholakia, Lord Loomba, Rita Payne, BBC World Service and Amit Roy of
The Daily Telegraph.
The seminar, ‘Focus on Assam’ on June 13 at the House of Lords will be
chaired by well-known journalist Ashish Roy, Times of India and *India
Tourism* along with Dr Audrey Cantlie of the School of Oriental and African
*Studies*.
