2006-01-17 Thread Himendra Thakur

Dear Mukul,

I thank you for your friendly tone
--- that's just like the good old days !! It is very painful for me that we
are having such a difference of opinion. But, I am NOT doing it for my sake. I
am NOT doing it to prove a point.

I am doing it for an extreme fear of
a calamity for  Assamese people. We had one "Manor Din" 185 years ago. We
had a mild taste of something starting like that in our lifetime at the
beaches of Silghat 44 years ago.  We know what happened to the Chakma
people right in front of our eyes in the 80s. How do you guaranty that such a
fate will not happen to the Assamese people?

If it was a private matter like an
academic theory in science or mathematics, I could keep my convictions and you
could keep yours. But this is NOT a private matter. A wrong decision will bring
suffering to millions of people. Innocent people. Women and children. We cannot
just keep our convictions to ourselves. We must analyze it and scrutinize every
word, every punctuation, so that we are sure that innocent people are safe. If
we make a mistake, and if people suffer, we must take full responsibility.

Let me discuss an example:  As a result of the Direct Action of
Jinnah on August 16, 17 & 18, 1946 in Calcutta, fear of communal rioting became very high in the
mind of the people of India at that time. When
India was partitioned in August 1947
according to the plan of Lord Mountbatten, questions were raised as to what
would happen if communal rioting broke out as a result of partition.

In defense of his pet partition
plan, Mountbatten thundered that he would use Army, he would use Air Force, he
would do anything needed to stop any communal riot after partition. I am quoting
here from the book “India Wins Freedom” by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.

In his book, Azad made a sarcastic
remark about Mountbatten’s bombastic assurances. One million people lost their
lives as a result of partition. Did Lord Mountabatten take any responsibility
about the beatings, rapes, injuries, decapitations and death of millions of
refugees?

Will you take the responsibility if
Assamese people go through the same suffering and get wiped out ?  I’m NOT talking of the suffering of the
innocent people during your freedom struggle which you  may justify as a collateral damage. My
question is How do you guaranty that the fate of the Assamese people will not be
the same as the fate of the Chakma people at the hands of Bangladesh?

Although it sounds like passing the
buck, I respect your comment that
“Never mind, there are 3 crore more voices to heed to . They will
decide. Let them.”   I definitely have great esteem for
the opinion of 3 crore people. But, how will you know their opinion? Plebiscite?
Young people are very much enchanted by the idea of plebiscite because they do
not have experience of what really happens. You do remember the plebiscite in
Sylhet in 1947 which was completely rigged. If the plebiscite was held with
military protection of the voters, Sylhet would have remained in
India.

Is it a fact that, out of the 3
crores that you are citing, 1 crore are illegal infiltrators?  And you are saying “They will
decide. Let them “ ??? Through
a rigged up plebiscite … without military protection ? How do you arrange
military protection for 2 crores of people who will have to move around under
the fear of terrorist attacks and suicide bombers?

This is verily the “reductio ad
absurdum” where we arrive by following your argument. For the sake of the safety
and survival of Assamese people, I appeal to you to give up the idea of a
separately free Assam.

It is not a question who is a loser
and who is a winner. If our people are saved, we all win. Please support the
ideology of “Assam is
India” “India’s Sovereignty is Assam’s
Sovereignty” … once I can convince you, I’ll continue to convince the remaining
1,99,99,999 people.

With love to
everybody,
Himendra

I am sure they all have/had positive feelings - The
ones that fought for Mother India. And then the ones
that fought (or are "fighting") for mother Assam.

The ones that are left are their children I guess -
the next generation. What about those countless,
silent ones that just want a break from this "mother
whatever" business and get on to productive, gainful
lives where they have the opportunity to earn money.
The thing impeding them is this unending tale of so
many mothers and the instability wrought in their
search.

I am sure their feelings are as precious as those that
fought for mother Assam or mother India. Let's give
them a break.

Dear Mukul,

I am really flabbergasted by seeing the error in your analysis. Throughout her past, with the kernel principle of acceptance, appreciation and adoration, India had been one nation … from Assam to Tamil Nadu to the Himalayas … the major aggression was inflicted by invaders who practiced conversion instead of acceptance, derision instead of appreciation, detestation instead of adoration. By taking advantage of the higher civilization of magnanimity that India developed, the invaders won at their second attack in 1193, overran the Indo-gangetic plains with superior cavalry at a high speed (approx 1800 miles in 12 years), burnt down Nalanda University in 1200 AD, occupied Bengal in 1205 … they were stopped by Assam. Assam saved India’s sovereignty whereas the rest of India fell at the sting
of the invaders. For 664 years, Assam was the only India outside the domination of the invaders.

When I made the above analysis in my article “ATAN BURAGOHAIN SAKO” you retorted with a short statement that “History is bunk” and also quoted a song (or something) that one should be “short & stupid.” That is your choice, but I refuse to be stupid.

Being unable to persuade anybody with your own “short & stupid” statement that “History is Bunk,”  you are now trying to use “History” to promote your own “short & stupid” view of “Sovereign  Greater Oxom” … I am sorry I had to use your own adjectives against you. These are very harsh words. I hope you will forgive me for using these words.

Finally, I urge you to give up what is “short & stupid” and persuade the younger generation to feel that “Assam is India” … India’s sovereignty is Assam’s sovereignty …

I completely agree that there must not be any exploitation. In fact, there are exploitations all over India. I have been working very closely with Swami Agnivesh who is fighting to stop the exploitation of child labourers by carpet manufac

the error in your analysis. Throughout her past, with the kernel principle
of acceptance, appreciation and adoration, India had been one nation … from
Assam to Tamil Nadu to the Himalayas … the major aggression was inflicted by
invaders who practiced conversion instead of acceptance, derision instead of
appreciation, detestation instead of adoration. By taking advantage of the
higher civilization of magnanimity that India developed, the invaders won at
their second attack in 1193, overran the Indo-gangetic plains with superior
cavalry at a high speed (approx 1800 miles in 12 years), burnt down Nalanda
University in 1200 AD, occupied Bengal in 1205 … they were stopped by Assam.
Assam saved
India’s sovereignty whereas
the rest of India fell at the sting of the
invaders. For 664 years, Assam was the only India outside
the domination of the invaders.

When I made the above analysis in my
article “ATAN BURAGOHAIN SAKO” you retorted with a short statement that “History
is bunk” and also quoted a song (or something) that one should be “short &
stupid.” That is your choice, but I refuse to be stupid.

Being unable to persuade anybody
with your own “short & stupid” statement that “History is Bunk,”  you are now trying to use “History” to
promote your own “short & stupid” view of “Sovereign  Greater
Oxom” … I am sorry I had to
use your own adjectives against you. These are very harsh words. I hope you will
forgive me for using these words.

Finally, I urge you to give up what
is “short & stupid” and persuade the younger generation to feel that “Assam
is India” … India’s sovereignty is Assam’s sovereignty …

I completely agree that there must
not be any exploitation. In fact, there are exploitations all over
India. I have been working very
closely with Swami Agnivesh who is fighting to stop the exploitation of child
labourers by carpet manufacturers in Haryana. Exploitation must be fought. But,
one must not mix up exploitation with sovereignty.

With the best
wishes,
Himendra
