Re: [Assam] since when has sattriya become a 'tribal' dance?

2010-08-11 Thread Choudhary, H. N. - AMW - MUM
I wonder what is so new about neo journalists' inaccurate reporting of
cultures or cultural events when the underlying reasons is commerce and
only commerce on "Incredible India"?

Take it easy. It is dramatization.

Take the ignorance easy, laugh at it (as a joke, if you can stomach) if
they put the Ganges to the south of India, or Karachi in Bengal. It is
reporting "incredible India". it is meant to mint money.

And if your self-esteem as a person with roots in the north-east does
not allow you to stomach the remarks of the ill-informed, culturally
impoverished reporter, try and correct him. You will have fun.

Expecting him to know about Sattriya Dance form is expecting too much,
perhaps ?

I may be wrong.

One Ms. Usha Rai, while speaking on the occasion of Kamala Kanta Saikia
Memorial Lectures, pointed out that the journalists are more given to
reporting lives and life-styles of Bollywood actors than giving any
importance to the peasant suicides affecting the society adversely. The
reason being sensationalism that sells.

Just to suggest that James Bond has reached India, they show the banks
of river Ganges in Varanasi, where snake-charmer Vijay Amritraj is busy
with a cobra, mendicants showing different tricks, fire-eaters
displaying their skills, scantily clad ladies with vermillion on
foeheads taking a dip in the river and Bond getting into a three-wheeler
taxi to reach Taj Mahal immediately.
The touch of India! It sells. It is commerce.

There is no reason to take offence; the description of Satriya as tribal
dance must have been deliberate to perpetuate the brand of the
north-east. It's rank commercialism of our times.

[Assam] since when has sattriya become a 'tribal' dance?

2010-08-09 Thread Uddipana Goswami
The ignorance of these 'mainstream' reporters regarding Assam and the
Northeast is nothing new. But surely they should verify their facts before
publishing such nonsense as "Sattriya, a tribal dance form from Assam that
has now been elevated to the status of a classical dance"!
