Re: [Assam] Are You All OK?
Thanks C'da for asking. So far, so good. We are all making preparations - boarding up the windows, duct taping panes, storing water, emergency supplies etc. From the local news - just heard that the eye is going to hit between Beaumont, TX and Port Arthur at 140 mph. Houston downtow to see around 100 +, North side of Houston to see 65-70 mph, Sugarland around 70+ mph. The biggest worry may be flooding come Moday or Tuesday if the hurrican stalls over any length of time (even as far as Dallas). I don't think any of the kharkhowas or markhowas have skipped town. A lot of people who left yesterday are still stuck in the freeways. Some are out of gas, or are just stuck in traffic. As a reference, there were reports that Houston to Dallas (normally around 4-5 hours) has taken 12+ hours if you are lucky. And once on the freeways (any freeeway), you can't turn back, as the freeways are now all on contra-flows to ease traffic out of Houston. Re: [Assam] Are You All OK?
Two Assamese families who live in the south side of Houston, close to Galveston have evacuated to Austin - Rupesh and Manju Saikia, and Renita and Mike Fincke. Rajen Barua and family are in India. There were public offers from the Assamese families in Dallas and Austin to house evacuating Assamese families from Houston and we thank them all. Most of the Assamese families are staying put in Houston. The hurricane is moving east of Houston and we expect winds upto 75 miles.Heavy rain is also predicted. Katy, Sugarland and Kingwood are not expected to get flooded. We'll know by tomorrow afternoon how we fare. In the meanwhile there are two Astros games in Milwaukee. At least that will be a diversion from the Hurricane stress. Here is the Hurricane sequence that is expected in Houston - rain first and to continue, storm wind next (40+mph), and then hurricane wind (75 mph). Right now it is sunny and picnic weather in Houston, it is going to be totally different in 24 hours. Re: [Assam] Are You All OK?
C'da, The toughest part was getting plywood. I couldn't get any after I waited till about 12 midnight at Home Depot. They kept telling us to wait another couple of hours. So I left at that point. Went back in the morning, and they wouldn't let us in (too many people), and those who waited all night got 10 a piece. Luckly, I have a couple of sheets in my garaage, and some fence boards - those should do and will board up. I am just going to duct tape the upstairs windows - can't reach them. We are not in the 100 year flood plain. We are in the north side of Houston. As far as Sugarland is concerned, I hear they don't get flooded usually, except in some areas of Missouri City (close to Sugarland). What about Kamal's locality? Talked to KJD yesterday. They are in Sugarland too, and should be OK. --Ram On 9/23/05, Chan Mahanta [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Ram: Is Sugarland, home to so many of our Oxomiya and also desi friends, a flood prone area? Re: [Assam] Are You All OK?
Hi Santanu, Thank you Santanu. There were a few families we knew who started out for Dallas or Austin, but turned back out of sheer frustration. There were some horror stories about some people running out of water, heat exhaustion, car overheating etc - A normal drive of 30 min. took people a couple of hours. My next door neighbor's wife kids returned from going to Dallas after spending all morning just trying to get out of Houston suburbs. --Ram da On 9/23/05, Roy, Santanu [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Ram-da: If you knowpeople that moved or are still moving north towards Dallas and don'thave a placeto stay, wehave space at home. Re: [Assam] Are You All OK?
Hi C'da:Thanks for your concern. We live in the north part of Houston -isolated from everybody else. :) Though people were fleeing Houston,Ramgopal took the opposite route and came to Houston from Austin, (as ifwe are always "destined" to do theoppositeto what others do) as Nitin I won't move from Houston. One of our biggest concerns were Caesar and Anthony - our two big dogs. Ram's sister from India has been calling us from Tuesday night to go to our nephew's (her son) place in Dallas, before even I knew it was that serious. But he has a big dog too, so we thought unless it is an emergency :), we should keep the 3 'boy' dogs in separate houses- so we stayed back in Houston. I guess if we have to, we will use the peanut butter, jelly and the other non-perishable food items that I hadgathered fornext week's collection bythevolunteer centerin our college for the Katrina victims. Anyway, God heard our prayers (and Iam writing this to you - about prayers?)and looks like it is going to be not as bad. We are starting to haveheavier winds than normalalready. But Iknow we will be okay and taking all the precautions that we can. Utpal and Santanu, thanks so much for your invitation. We will take a rain-check :)for now and know that we have 3 choices now - 2 in Dallas (Santanu and Sanjeev in Dallas) and 1 inNJ (Utpal) to go if we still decide to leave town, and if some airlines will fly us :). Seriously, a big thank you to you both. About boarding the windows, forget upstairs, I will be happy if Ram finishes the downstairs windows. Hehas his tool belt on and the tool-kit ready, but we will wait and see when he finishes. In the mean time, Ihave put duct tape on the glass windows. Anyway, you get the picture of everybody now. You should have put Nitin up to that instead of Ram. Is he on hurricane duty? I heard moments earlier that the wind speeds have fallen below Cat 3 level. See, your prayers are working already :-). Congrats. on your completion of duct-taping the windows. How do you clean the glue after removing them? That would keep you busy for a few days I guess. guess if we have to, we will use the peanut butter, jelly and the other *** Do you mean you didn't keep any 'poita-bhat' to tide you over? I know Ram would not eat 'pwra goroi maas', but kesa-jolokiya, mitha-tel and patot-diya kerelar pitika with poita-bhat could be unbeatable a hurricane fare.
