[asom] Le computer or La computer???

2006-12-22 Thread Manoj Das
A French teacher was explaining to her college class that in French,
unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine. House is
feminine la maison. Pencil is masculine le crayon.

A student asked, What gender is computer ? Instead of giving the answer, the
teacher split the class into two groups male and female - and asked them to
decide for themselves whether computer should be a masculine or a feminine
noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for their recommendation.

The men's group decided that computer should definitely be of the
feminine gender (la computer) because:
1.. No one but their creator understands their internal logic.
2.. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is
incomprehensible to everyone else.
3.. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible
later review.
4.. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending
half your pay cheque on accessories for it.

The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be masculine
(le computer) because:
1.. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on.
2.. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves.
3.. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they
ARE the problem.
4.. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a
little longer, you could have gotten a better model

So which one do u think has the winning argument?

[asom] Reputed Sankari Scholar/Economist/Educationist/Litterateur my father Principal Bhabananda Deka is no more

2006-12-22 Thread arnabjan deka

Reputed Sankari Scholar Economist-Litterateur Principal Bhabananda Deka
left for his heavenly abode

With great sorrow and plentiful of grief I use this forum to inform one and
all the concerned that the eminent Assamese Economist, great Sankari Scholar,
reputed Educationist, First Assamese Senior Most Central Government Officer in
India holding the responsibility of setting up the system for holding the All
Indian level Civil Services Examinations through the UPSC, India, and one of
the torch bearers of the famous Five who set up the Assamese Department in the
Delhi University, and former Principal of Pragjyotish College in Guwahati, Teok
Tamulichiga college in Janjhi, Bapujee college in Sarthebari, Hajo B Ed college
as well as Sarukhetri Junior College--- Principal Bhabananda Deka left for his
heavenly abode on the fourth of December, 2006, at around 9 30 am, at his
permanent residence in Guwahati. He happened to be my father.

My father died just after taking bath in cold water like every morning and
doing his prayer after lighting the earthen lamp in front of the deity at home.
He was 76.
It is amazing that both his Birth and Death weekdays and TITHIS (PURNIMA) ARE
THE SAME.
His Adya Shraddha passed on 14th of December 2006.
Adya shraddha was excellent.I hurriedly published a 64 page biographical
book on him with colour pages, and inaugurated it just after midday Naam Kirtan
.

The Assam Legislative Assembly formally passed a Resolution mourning his
death, and Chief Minister of Assam expresssed his grief through newspapers on
his demise and Assam Sahitya Sabha also passed Resolution recognising his
literary contributions.

It is pertinent to mention herein that my father had just few months before
his death completed the English translation of KIRTAN GHOSA of Srimanta
Sankardev, which had been specially mentioned by all newspapers as well as
Television Channels , and Radio Stations in Assam.
He also authored more than 100 books and innumerable articles on Archaeology,
Heritage, different Ethnic communities, Sankari Sahitya, Temples in Assam,
Satra institutions, Dramas, Poetry, as well as first Assamese textbooks on
Economics, Civics and Political Science. He also authored several English books
including the last one on Srimanta Sankardev.

All prominent personalities of Assam attended the functions and repeatedly
visited our residence, who includes--- Dr Mamoni Raisom goswami, Dr Hiren
gohain, Dr Lakshminandan Bora, PRANTIK Editor Pradip Baruah, Assam Sahitya
Sabha President Kanaksen Deka, Dr Sibanath Barman, Samir Tanti, Dr Satyendra
Narayan goswami, Prof Bisweswar Hazarika, Prof Paban Kumar Baruah, Dilip Sarma,
Dr Bhupen Hazarika's sister Sudakshina Sarma, Filmmaker Gauri Barman, as
well as many Satradhikars including Sankardev Award Winner Narayan Chandra
Goswami of Kamalabari Satra of Majuli.
The most surprising element of these religious activities is the unexpected
visits of uninvited Head Priest of Kamakhya Temple, Moulavi of Masjid and other
such religious gurus, who paid religious tributes and prayed before the alter
mounted in honour of my father.
The Chief Minister, Chief Secretary, Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly
and other persons also paid glaring tributes to my father.
Now I am busy collecting money to the tune of Rs. 1,20,000/= (about $ 3000)
to immediately publish my father's last major literary magnum opus ---the
English Translation of Srimanta Sankardev's KIRTAN GHOSA, which he completed
just a couple fo moths before his death. However, the unexpected financial
constrains I faced because of the father's death as well as organisation of the
Adya Shraddha in a befitting manner has somewhat made it look almost impossible
to publish the big volume book of about 350 pages immediately. I am looking for
generous sponsors, and please let me know if you find someone. You may also
convey to such prospective persons that in the event of someone is interested
not in sponsoring, but in lending that amount of $ 3000, to me immediately, I
am even willing to commit to return the entire amount within the next one year.

As for the rest, now we are gradually getting over the trauma, and I am
devoting lots of time in searching for all the unpublished manuscripts of my
father, as well as those innumerable essays and articles, which are not yet
compiled in book form. We have already formed a body naming it as PRINCIPAL
BHABANANDA DEKA FOUNDATION, and its first offering ---the Biography of
Principal Bhabananda Deka was already published and released in the
AdyaShraddha.
