2007-05-30 Thread Pratul Kalita
Dear Naba,

  Please see the mail below:

  Pratul Kalita
  Institute Coordinator, NEPIF

As could be expected, because of the senseless violence in North East (and
courtesy external media magnifying the ills here), an effort which was
underway for finding employment for NE students got a little jolt.

NEPIF had initiated, in association with Gauhati Univeristy, this Placement
Event for TCS, to find employment of B.SC BCA students of North East. So
much efforts were already invested - more than a dozen college authorities
directly contacted, news-ads given on news papers, logistics planned .. But
however same had to be deferred for obvious reasons!

Call it whatever might be, but we have not been dis-heartened. We are
professionals and can not really do more than raising our voice of protest
against the evil deeds. But at the same time, we would also keep working for
the betterment of NE in whatever smaller capacities, as than only we can
negate whatever is the negative growth that has been brought about by these
evils.

NEPIF has already found employment for 77 Engineering Management students
of NE, in prestigious organizations like Satyam, ICICI Bank, Genpact,
Colgate Palmolive etc. with annual starting salary of Rs.2.5 lakhs to 3.5lakhs.

The planed event for TCS shall be held and the dates would be notified to
you again, so that you can bring it to the notice of the eligible students
near you... for more information, kindly visit the forum site:
http://www.nepif. weblet.in/

Lets hope we see a more peaceful North East soon.

Regards,
Prasanta Bora.

Terror gripped Assam is facing yet another grave situation. Unabated terror and
indiscriminate bomb blasts being carried out by the United Liberation Front of

protest resistance against this sort of terrorism, we call upon the people of
Assam to come forward against terrorism. To lodge protest against the
indiscriminate killings in the city and other areas of Assam, we are organizing
a protest rally of the citizens on May 30 (Wednesday) next at 10.30 am in front

Therefore we appeal to all anti-terrorist and fearless people to join this

Very true Saumar,

It's indeed a gargantuan task to explain the difference to such people. I have
committed the Himalayan blunder quite a couple of times. The moment you end up
describing about the multi-national company (MNC) you are working for, pat
comes the responseOhhh!!...I get it. A BPO!! (like hell he/she knows..may
not even know the full form, leave alone the what it stands for! You wince, but
valiantly keep a straight face! He/she continues nonetheless...) It is really
sad that you people in MNCs have to talk to clients all through the
night!?...You try once, you repeat twice, thrice, trying to get it straight
again, ultimately you sagely bob your head and echo...yes,
sometimes..especially when I can't get any sleep!

When you can't beat them, join them... is what most of us end up doing.

Regards,

Gitanjali Hazarika

PS: Infosys is a helluva company guys. Great work. Show them your skills. Let
them taste the power of Assamese talent. Congratulations once more. May your
tribe increase.

[asom] Asom to get country's first mobile hospital of traditional medicine

2007-05-30 Thread KOUSHIK HAZARIKA
Imagine a well-equipped hospital carrying medical facilities to
rescue people from dreaded diseases like diabetes and cancer at your
doorstep.

It may seem impossible for people in the remote and hilly terrains
of Asom, but this is what veteran herbal medicine practitioner
Gunaram Khanikar is all set to make possible.

With a mission to take the cardinal message 'Prevention is better
than cure' to the rural masses, Mr Khanikar and his NGO, Research
and Training Centre on Indian Traditional Treatment(RTCITT), is
gearing up to open India's first Mobile Hospital of herbal medicines.

The hospital, to be launched in upper Asom's Golaghat district,
would carry herbal medicines, samples of aromatic plants found in
the region, photographs of the various herbal plants as well as
books containing information on the side-effect-free herbal
medicines and promote herbal treatment in the state.

''Our basic aim is to popularise herbal treatment among the rural
masses and collect and preserve the medicinal plants abundantly
found in the forests and jungles of the region. We want to promote
the message that prevention is better than cure,'' Managing Director
of the NGO Mr Khanikar said.

Funded by local MP Dip Gogoi, the hospital in a six-wheeler will
also take out an exhibition and a food consciousness mission to
promote healthy food habits as well as herbal medicine cultivation
as employment generation sources.

He said, ''Herbal medicines are a tried and tested treatment method
for prevention of many diseases like cancer and diabetes and the
North east is immensely rich in herbal and aromatic plants. But due
to lack of awareness we are yet to reap benefit''.

The hospital will also be accompanied by eight resource persons
comprising ayurvedic doctors and nurses who will try to provide
ayurvedic treatment among the masses and children in the schools and
colleges in the rural areas.

''Our resource persons will provide training to children and youths
on the identification of the herbal and aromatic plants and their
commercial cultivation.

We will also open a garden of herbal medicinal plants in each school
and college of the state, particularly in the rural areas,'' Mr
Khanikar added
