Re: [Asterisk-Users] UPS rating for SOHO asterisk box

2005-05-31 Thread Preston Garrison
We actually did this, however we didn't use lead acide batteries, but
GEL ones just like UPSes usually come with. This way their are no
venting issues etc. It worked great, except don't put too much load on
them. The circuits actually started to fry when thr power went out and
we had 5 servers humming away on one :) Putting one or two on a UPS
with a couple of car batteries it lasted forever. Usually the charge
circuitries consist of sensing when the voltage stops changing, or cuts
the charge off when the battery reaches a certain voltage. Either way
if they are GEL cells, and the same voltage it could work :) The UPS
wouldn't know the difference, unless it has some sort of a timer
circuit which cuts the charge off after a certain amount of time, and
you wouldn't really know unless you tried it.

get a kill-a-watt or lacrosse power monitor for $30 and leave it
running for a few days. then you can sort throw the data and know what
your power draw really is..

Not to mention that the charging circuitry on a lot of UPSes is *not*

you hook up a bunch of lead-acid car batteries and the UPS may try to

Anyone have the time and webspace to post a quick recording of a
sample conversation in both codecs? If you want to get even more
tricky, perhaps samples of music on hold in both as well? Or noisy
environments?

Obviously not very scientific and prone to a wide margin of error
(background noise, etc) -- but I think if there was a comparison sound
file posted on the Wiki or something it would help people feel better
informed before jumping on the Digium licenses.

Just a quick test for "humm, that doesn't sound too bad, maybe it's
worth spending $10 for each license and fiddling with everything to
give it a try".

I can't be the only one that isn't quite sure where to place G729 on
the scale of GSM - ULaw.

Re: [Asterisk-Users] realtime excessive database queries

2005-05-22 Thread Preston Garrison
Why not add the code to do so? The biggest problem is several routines
would need to be modified to pass around the data. It was just easier
to put hooks in all the functions for the database. Writing your own
database interface and caching the queries could do it as well.

 We eventually dumped the idea of using an external database period,
and ended up putting our own hash based system in place.

I'm in the same boat... I think we all are. People are there - they
just don't WANT to talk to anyone. The beginning of this month the IVR
changed - SOMEONE had to do that.
The numbers I have are 800-987-9891 and 303-785-5014 and from the
inetmedia llc web page I got 866-452-8930 and I thought once I heard the
same IVR from all three but according to Google 866-452-8930 goes to
some herbal-life place. LOL Could be! It didn't sound the same to me
today.
And then today - I saw my calls to them actually being charged against
my sixtel account balance - something I hadn't seen before - so SOMEONE
had to fix that.
But from digging around the Internet I did find out they only started
last August and it looks like a one-man-show so he may have been sick
or in an accident since the end of last month (when I did get a trouble
ticket resolved). Gee - that was about Noon on a Friday too! Hm...
I am ready to contact the Denver BBB and Colorado State - I did find
'them' listed on the State business files. So I have 'their'
addresses
of record - I will wait and see if they bill me for another month for
DID or Toll Free (both still 'Pending') and if they do - they get
registered letters - and a call to the State and I'll pull the last
payment back on the credit card just to pay for the letters.
But their outbound sure works good for me...

 A programming language is one of the languages you wish a program had
been

Again it all depends what you want to do. if you are servicing 20
users on one machine, and don't need to do anything complicated, sure
perl I am sure would do the job. But if your service tons of users, on
a large scale basis, I doubt perl is a good choice.

 I concur with Jean; you can do some quite amazing things in perl and
python in a month that would take you much longer in 'C'. It's too bad
that programming language snobbery still exists. I used to think that
Perl was too slow for production code.. but hardware nowdays more than
makes up for any overhead Perl adds, especially if you design your
application correctly. If you're running your app on a 486 with 64M of
ram.. write it in assembly code. If you have a 3GHZ machine with a 2G
of ram.. you have a lot of choices :)

rack

We are currently using Dell 2650 and Dell 2850 but are seeing some

with the raid controllers failing and are now shopping for a suitable

Any suggestions?

Actually using voicemail from db is alot smarter then using SIP from
the database. But that is mostly due to the fact that realtime queries
the database 4 times everytime it needs a sip record. Also mysql
doesn't keep everything in memory at all. It only keeps stuff it needs
to in memory, that it finds itself accessing alot. The algorithms are
pretty damn good in mysql about what to keep in memory.

Subject: RE: [Asterisk-Users] voicemail.conf from DB

In my opinion.. using voicemail from DB is not good
for "scaling up" scenarios... in particular if you need to
provide HA of five nine... 99.999%
The cluster database (well in particular MYSQL puts everything in
RAM)... so
as the user base grows.. so does RAM requirement...

Hi
I have been playing with trying to get voicemail.conf from DB, I am
using cvs-head, but when I start asterisk, it dies a horrible death,
because it cant load any voicemil setting.
I looked at my mysql logs to see what query was being sent, and I get
SELECT category, var_name, var_val, cat_metric FROM voicemail_users
WHERE filename='voicemail.conf' and commented=0 ORDER BY filename,
cat_metric desc, var_metric asc, category, var_name, var_val, id;
which is in no way related to the table I created following the
example on the wiki.
Is there another table format , I have

+-+---+--+-+-++
Field   | Type  | Null | Key | Default | Extra  |

+-+---+--+-+-++
uniqueid| int(11)   |  | PRI | NULL| auto_increment |
customer_id | int(11)   |  | | 0   ||
context | varchar(50)   |  | | ||
mailbox | int(5)|  | MUL | 0   ||
password| varchar(4)|  | | 0   ||
fullname| varchar(50)   |  | | ||
email   | varchar(50)   |  | | ||
pager   | varchar(50)   |  | | ||
stamp   | timestamp(14) | YES  | | NULL||

+-+---+--+-+-++
