[asterisk-users] best softphone for 2012?

2012-01-06 Thread Tom Poe
Just installed asterisknow 1.6. I can access freepbx. I need to test
system on my LAN. Which softphone is best to use? I'm running ubuntu
on Dell optiplex G260 desktop at home. I'm hoping to setup basic IP PBX
for incoming/outgoing calls. No video.

Hi there Tom

I've found that QuteCom works just fabulously for my needs,... you're
mileage may vary though...

Ross: Thanks, much.

I'm not using pbxinaflash but I am using Vitelity and have had no
problems at all - in fact very happy with them. They should have given
you a management portal for your account probably portal.vitelity.net.
In there, there is an option to open a trouble ticket. Hope this helps

[asterisk-users] x-lite settings to reach asterisk

2009-07-23 Thread Tom Poe
Hello: I have the linux version 2.0 of x-lite downloaded. Does anyone
know exactly what settings needed to reach the asterisk server on my
home network?
Internet -DSL transparent bridge -router -asterisk

-softphone

x-lite attempts to login and register, but times out. There must be
some setting I'm missing. Any help appreciated.

Does your asterisk has a private or public IP?
Is your X-Lite in your LAN or outside? If X-Lite is outside the Lan, you
need to forward all traffic coming to your Lan in port 5060, to
 asterisks private IP.

Activate SIP debug in asterisk CLI to check if the traffic is getting to
 asterisk.

Joao: Thanks for responding. Last night, I gave up trying to get the
settings right. Then, today, right after posting, I brought up x-lite
to give it another go, and the dumb thing logged in successfully and all
tests for in-house connections are working. Not sure what happened, but
this step is now completed. I'll now start in to see if I can set
things up to call out.

I have the pre-configured PBX in a Flash computer. I'm following the
book by Blanchas. Wish me luck.

 Subject: [asterisk-users] newbie questions

I have an Asterisknow.org CD. When I boot up, it seems ready for me to
choose update, console, etc. I'm assuming I need to do something at the
CLI prompt. Is there a tutorial that would take me from loading CD to
 making first test call?

 Computer is Dell Optiplex GX260
 50GB free disk space
 1.5GB RAM
 P4 processor
 external mic
 speakers
Skype is on board, and would be good to use it, if possible.

If I want to use Skype, do I need anything additional? Would it be
better to install CD on my hard drive? Any help appreciated.

Hello: Cancel these questions. It's looking more and more like I need
to have a dedicated computer for proper Asterisk implementation, even
for a home single line user. I found the link for ordering O'Reilly
Asterisk book. Will spend time with that, first. Thanks for those who
have responded. By the way, my AsteriskNow CD had no install guide with it.

I am curious for your thoughts on US HR 5889:

 http://blamcast.net/articles/orphaned-works-open-source-copyright

While I am sure that the implications of this bill, as it appears to be
constructed, have no significant implication on Asterisk as such, it could
potentially injure the community of open-source addons, modules, and
helper applications surrounding it and essential to its use in many
 scenarios.

After reading the bill in question, I have little doubt that the authors of
that blog piece are, to put it mildly, full of it. HR 5889 makes clear
mention of the diligence that is required, and, if notified of the
infringement, the infringer must cease to make use of the work, unless
he pays the copyright owner a price that the owner demands. Furthermore,
the existence of an active email account on the copyrighted work in question
would completely negate any claim of due diligence, by the plain language
 of the bill.

Additionally, the blog piece completely misses the qualification of the
commercial database: to qualify, they must contain all authors and all
contact information, and if any contact information is readily available, and
they do not put it in their database, they stand to lose certification as a
copyright database. So much for having to pay to register your work. In
short, this bill is very well balanced, and I certainly hope it becomes law.

Then again, Lessig felt strong enough about the bill to publish an op-ed
in the NYT. By the way, are you familiar with the senator that authored
the bill?

[asterisk-users] videoconferencing with asterisk issues

2008-04-18 Thread Tom Poe
What's the situation with configuring Asterisk to handle
videoconferencing over a community wireless intranet? I found a radio
at www.ubnt.com that is called, Nanostation2. It has a range up to 15
kilometers, and sells for a mere $80.

Seems like a really low-cost community wireless network (intranet) that
doesn't need Internet access could be set up. The community could then
use Asterisk for videoconferencing for a community wide garage sale
tour each week.

Any pointers on what would be needed to do this appreciated.

Get any Linux distribution. You can purchace a CD in just about
anywhere. CentOS (http://centos.org) and Debian (http://debian.org) see
to be the most popular to run Asterisk on. See those links for CD
purchasing as well. Though there are methids to boot at least Debian
from a floppy or whatever.

Ooops! I wasn't very clear. I apologize. I've obtained a few older
PCs. It seems like they could be set up as VoIP boxes, and put out into
the community. Asterisknow.org sounds like it's got a liveCD that I
could put into the CD drive, and install a VoIP setup. Is the
Asterisknow making a CD available for purchase to put on these older PCs?

[Asterisk-Users] Intro and first questions

2006-02-17 Thread Tom Poe
This is my first venture into VoIP from my Fedora Core 4 system. I came
across a posting:

http://atrpms.net/name/asterisk/

http://atrpms.net/name/asterisk-addons/
http://atrpms.net/name/asterisk-sounds/
http://atrpms.net/name/spandsp/
http://atrpms.net/name/libpri/
http://atrpms.net/name/zaptel/

on the Fedora list, added the repository to yum, and downloaded, installed,
then typed:
# asterisk -c , hit the return,
and a bunch of stuff happened, before returning to the root prompt.

My first goal(s) is to be able to configure the machine to make a PC to PC call
to my daughter, who lives in Minnesota. If all goes well, I can set up her
computer to receive the call, using Asterisk. Is this a realistic first
experience project? If so, is there a tutorial out there that describes the
steps I need to take? Any advice, suggestions, greatly appreciated.
Tom
