You need RFC-2833 or SIP-INFO if not using alaw/ulaw. Most compression will remove certain frequencies from the signal. As a result there may not be enough spectral energy left to allow the DTMF detector to work correctly. I should note that we are not running the Digium g729 implementation, but the intel one. Also, to not angry people, this ofcourse isn't used in our production environment, only for testing if we want g.729.
