Re: [Asterisk-Users] Hardphone deployment recommendation

2005-03-07 Thread Dana Olson
Thanks for your replies.

My main concern is to keep the price down. If the BudgeTones are crap
phones, which previous posts to this mailing list seem to indicate,
and we have to replace them often, then the price for a better phone
would be worth it. I don't think we need 3-way calling either, and as
stated already, nothing a proper dialplan can't fix.

I'm going to try getting in a couple of those Sipura 841s for testing.
Thanks for that suggestion.

 Thanks for that suggestion.

FYI, I have a site with 6 of the SPA-841 units in plave and they were
working find until last week. On of them licked up and now cannot get
past Initializing Network on boot. It's on it's wayback to Sipura for
replacement.

A more uncomfortable issue is that the speaker phones were found to be
working very poorly. The speakerphone user is just about inaudable to the
user on the other end of the call. This is the case with all of the units
I have. I had them all running the lates firmware from the website. In
Sipura's defense, they responded within about 15 minutes to my support
email with a link to a test version of the firmware which improved
things but didn't completely fix it.

My gut feel is that Sipura is still learning with their first hard phone.
The price is great for the feature set and I have no other serious
complaints about the phone. I'd like to see the buttons improved and the
display be tiltable for better viewing. We got used to both of these
quickly though. We'll be overjoyed when the speakerphone wrinkles get
ironed out.

I bought one a few weeks ago.

I had the same issue with 'initialising network.' I had a very fast
response back from their support desk. Solution is to unplug the
network cable reset back to factory defaults from the keypad menu.

I have concerns over the Sipura 841's TX audio quality - it seems to
have some AGC or noise suppression which does not work at all well. If
you talk quietly the phone seems to mute all TX audio. Shout and it
starts sending. I have disabled silence supression.

It needs 'de-Americanising' for progress tones, languages, date and time
formats and also needs the SUBSCRIBE/NOTIFY support or similar for
multiple line appearances. I think with a bit more work it will be a
great little phone.

Tried that (and again just now to be sure) and no luck. I have the RMA so
it will go back today.

The microphone is [somewhat inexplicably] mounted in the base over a hole that
faces downwards, between two of the rubber feet, its like a 'U' with a dot
inside it. If you're feeling brave, you could bore a new hole and mount it
somewhere its more likely to pick up the voice of the user. Or you could try
enlarging the hole with the tip of a knife and see if that helps. I fitted a
few LEDs inside pointing in at the screen because of the lack of a backlight.
Didn't make much difference.

Isn't the idea of this, to sort of use the desk as it's plane to pick up
sound? I thought a few vendors did this kind of thing...

[Asterisk-Users] Hardphone deployment recommendation

2005-03-04 Thread Dana Olson
I'm looking to purchase and deploy a bunch of hardphones for agent
use. The phones will have to register with Asterisk and/or SER,
depending on where the phones go. They need only one line, G729 codec,
and no super fancy features. Preferrably something that is easy to
provision.

I would think the BudgeTone would be good, but then I've read so many
people complaining about them, and some people seem to recommend the
Sipura adapters.

I'm looking to keep my cost down, and the BudgeTone is around $100
CDN, give or take.

Let me know what you would purchase for about 100 users, 1 line each,
G729, and why.

We've had decent results with the BudgeTone phones I have already, but
I only have about 4 of them, and I have about 5 Aastra/Sayson 480i
phones which are a bit pricey for this application, and very
featureful. The Sipura box I have is alright, and the IAXys work, but
aren't an option for this application. I'm looking for SIP, not IAX.
The main reason I ask to the mailing list instead of basing a large
purchase decision on the phones I have here is that while these
devices haven't failed on me yet (with the exception of one flaky
480i), I know that there are some of you who have experience with
large deployments.

Also, if you recommend an analog adapter, is there any recommendation
for analog phone to go with it? I'm not sure if the users will want
headsets or handsets, so either one is fine.

Thanks for any advice and experiences.

PS: If you're thinking you'll get a purchase contract out of me, you
won't - the supplier decision isn't in my hands, so don't bother
spamming me with your deals.

What is your price range is the question. BudgetTones are OK but have
some limitations. Polycoms are my choice for around $160-$200. Ciscos
work well for some people too. Just a matter of how many dollars. The
budgettone lack of 3-way can be gotten around with a proper dial plan.

I just received my sipura SPA-841 phone (not an ATA), and it's a nicer
than the
BudgeTone for about the same price. I paid $85.00 for it.

Features it has that the BudgeTone doesn't:
* 2 line appearances (you can add 2 more for a total of 4)
transfer and conference work when using more than 1 line appearance
*  headset jack
*  voicemail button
It doesn't have a network switch or POE.
