Re: [Asterisk-Users] I love you!

2004-05-11 Thread Soren Rathje
Nah.. The only way I ever notice that someone sent me a virus is when my mailserver
says "beep".. And that is currently so frequent that I'm considering turning that
off.. :-)

Makes me think of this (The Network Auralizer): http://peep.sourceforge.net/intro.html
Check out the "Low load average demo" mp3, you'll know what I mean..

If you run your own mailserver, I suggest the following to keep your
braindead users from being infected by the "click here" or "open random
attachment" vector:

http://www.pc-tools.net/unix/renattach/

It removes/renames attachments in emails, at the server. It is very
configurable and is free.

Next: If you opened that attachment on your own, you're an *idiot* and
got what you had coming.

If you *didn't* open it on your own but, your mailreader program did,
you're an *idiot* for running that mailreader and got what you had coming.

Of course, and I suggest a firewall as well, but its NOT going to do
anything for a purloined email some infected machine in Bumsquatialand
sending it as you. Theres only so much you can do.

Please make sure that you are not sending viruses to other subscribers.
You can do this via the following method.
1) run an online virus scanner to remove any viruses you may have. I
personally use http://housecall.trendmicro.com they also have a virus
scanner that runs on your computer if the viruses you have are really bad.
2) After you computer is virus free, Install a reliable anti-virus program I
recommend using Norton Antivirus.
3) Make sure that you update you virus definitions at least 3 times a
week.(Incase of high virus threats)
If you do not understand any of what I have said, Please bring your computer
to a qualified professional.(Your local computer repair shop)
If you are too cheap to do that, or think that you can fix this issue your

return it to where you bought it from. If it was given to you, then give it
to someone that actually knows how to run it.
I am sorry if I may sound sarcastic, but to fix a problem, you must first

Getting them here as well, and from a lot of sources besides the * list.
Seems theres a major outbreak of sendings of net-sky, bagel and a few
un-identified ones. I dont know if they're related to the Sasser outbreak,
(suspect in custody BTW) but they're allegedly targeting w2k systems
especially hard. I got one last nite supposedly from a .uk account, that
originated in Ghana. (Anti-viri caught and disposed of it of course)
Check you have the latest viri definitions, (I cant imagine WHY one would
be on the internet receiving email without this in place) and a genteel
prod to the list-ops to notify the subscribed accounts noting theyre being
blamed by default. The reality is, their addys were prob purloined and used
in the viri transmission, without either their knowledge, or their machine
being infected. I know its a pain in the a$$ but thats the price we pay for
the Internet. I have sent those kind of notices to ppl on the lists I
moderate, not to scare them, but as a heads up, as some clueless anti-viri
programs will be sending them hate mail.

Just another rotten day in Internet-land I guess...
