Multiple ways... try 'dmesg | grep duplex' or use 'mii-tool'.

Be careful with assumptions relative to what happens after a reboot
on any system. Static use of the mii-tool within your system startup
scripts may be necessary to ensure full duplex operation.

For an asterisk server _always_ statically define the duplex setting
on both the switch and the nic card. On sip phones and workstations,

Can you give an example of how to check the duplex setting and statically
define it for, say, RedHat9

On Mon, 29 Aug 2005, Rich Adamson wrote:

To ensure reasonable performance, key devices (eg, routers, servers)
should _always_ have duplex settings statically defined. Speed is
less of an issue as the 10/100 negotiation is hard to get wrong.

Part of the duplex negotiation problem is that consistent standards
have not been implemented by all manufacturers (and nic card drivers).
The two ends of a cat5 cable will often times try to auto negotiate
the duplex settings at roughly the same time, and 50% of the time it
will be wrong (eg, mismatched). As someone mentioned previously,
mismiatched duplex settings will seriously impact performance and
throughput.

Keep in mind that opening the cat5 cable at either end (eg, unplug
and replug the rj45) will cause a re-nogitation, as will a reboot,
etc.

There are a lot of systems and drivers that don't include the code
to tell you what the actual duplex setting is after a re-negotiation.
MS-based products are poor, and finding the actual setting in many of
the linux distro's is not necessarily easy.

For an asterisk server _always_ statically define the duplex setting
on both the switch and the nic card. On sip phones and workstations,
the duplex setting is less important, but should still match at both
ends of the cable.

(FWIW, my company does professional network performance assessments
and you couldn't even guess how many large & small corporate admins
don't have a clue. That's based on 12 years of experience at sites
in over 40 US states.)

Re: [Asterisk-Users] IAX2 Softphone Quality & Network Cards

2005-08-29 Thread Julio Arruda

You may want to check if the autonegotiation "agreed" in both sides.
Older nic/drivers/switches would have problems with autonegotiation.

Also, statistics can tell you something about this..
Example, if you have shorts/runts in one port, and late-collisions in
the L1 'peer' port (the other side of the cable), you may have one side
in full and the other in half.
(the late-collisions would be counted in the half duplex side, and
shorts/runts in the full-duplex side)

AFAIK, depends...
If you have your switches doing autonegotiation, you can't disable
autoneg in the NIC and hardcode it to do 100/Full-duplex, or you WILL
have a duplex mismatch.
This is as per the standard.
A duplex mismatch is really bad, is in fact worse than having segments
doing halfduplex (properly).

[Asterisk-Users] IAX2 Softphone Quality & Network Cards

2005-08-27 Thread Paul Mahler
I have had uniformly bad experiences with soft phones when there are network
issues. Hardware phones seem to work much better if there are network problems.
For example, I have been able to make fine calls over a wireless link I use
with a cisco 7960, but NO softphone works over the same link.

You should also look at the settings for the NIC on the computer. Are your
network equipment and NIC both set for full or half duplex? They should be set
to the same duplex setting. GIG equipment is easier, it defaults to full
duplex.

Hope this helps!

Paul

Fw: [Asterisk-Users] IAX2 Softphone Quality & Network Cards

2005-08-26 Thread Bill McCready \(PCPhoneline.com\)

Hi!

We are in the process of an Asterisk call center deployment using IAX2
G711 ulaw softphones. Outbound sound quality is terrible.

RESPONSE: This is Bill McCready from PCPhoneline.com . To address your
sound quality issues, you may want to check out our VTA1000 Skype+SIP+IAX2
Tri-Mode Gateway which plugs into the USB port of a Windows computer. You
can use it with any good cordless or regular phone. This is our very
latest version of the VTA1000 and it supports Skype + 10 x SIP + 10 x IAX2
networks concurrently all at the same time - no joke !!!

It makes use of the GSM codec for IAX2 which is a lot less bandwidth hungry
than G.711 and it also has built in adjustable volume controls so you can
fine tune the conversation volume to match your network levels. You can
disable the Skype and SIP network calling possibilities if you just want to
use IAX2.For clarification, the VTA1000 works completely independently
from your computer's speakers and is designed to work even if your computer
screen is powered off.

You can see this new version of the VTA1000 gateway on Ebay here
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5235490849 .
Alternatively, we have a complete 2.4 Ghz Skype+SIP+IAX2 Cordless Phone
package here http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5235489796
which of course means you don't need to be anywhere near your computer to
place and receive calls.

If you have any questions, please private e-mail me. Thanks !!!

Best regards,

Bill McCready

I haven't had similiar experience, but in several threads about sound
quality people have talked about Network cards being the culprit. In
particular, a few people have commented all sorts of problems on
onboard NIC's, since they tend to be of lesser quality than
stand-alone NICS.

[Asterisk-Users] IAX2 Softphone Quality & Network Cards

2005-08-26 Thread Adam Robins
We are in the process of an Asterisk call center deployment using IAX2
G711 ulaw softphones. Outbound sound quality is terrible.

This week we rebuilt the entire LAN with Cisco 2950-EI switches and have
employed QoS on the switches and router. Still sounds terrible.

What we are now finding is that the network card in the PC may be the
key to the problem. A Dell Optiplex P4 2.4GHz 512MB machine with an
onboard Intel NIC is bad, while an older Dell Dimension P3 864MHz 128MB
machine with onboard 3COM sounds good.

Has anyone out there had a similar experience?

Thanks,

Hi,
The ringing issue seems to be a problem with the iaxlib - I have the same
problem with both this program and Diax. I can partly be solved by adding
an
Answer() as the first priority in outgoing contexts. After doing that I
instead get problems when the called part is busy - I get no audio
notification of the busy status (either in Mediax or Diax.

With an X100P card I get the PSTN line ringtone and/or busy tone in DIAX
when an outgoing call is in progress.
No need to have an Answer before...

The only issue I have had with it so far, and it may be a
misconfiguration problem as I am certainly a newb, is that when I dial a
number that sends it over to my POTS line, I get ringing from the
softphone and the POTS line. When to POTS line answers, the softphone
continues to ring.

Nice work indeed. I am running it on a laptop under Windows XP w/ SP2
and it is working well. As I stated before the only issue I have had so
far is the ringing issue.

Wow! That is a nice piece of work especially for a primer version.
My first tests looked very promising: no problems at all ...

> The phone can be used mostly with the keyboard :

I liked that very much. Some Softphones allow dialing but no hangup or no #/*
on the keyboard => unuseable with keys only.

> All comments (good or bad) are welcome

I've just one headache with your software: It's another piece of closed source
(just as firefly is, and they are a bunch of months ahead of you).

Please consider donating the phone to the community by releasing it under an
approved open source license.
You might keep your commercial interests in mind by dual licensing it, so
customizations you do for customers of yours won't necessarily fall under the
open source license.

I think a whole bunch of developers would be glad to join you in the future
development of this client when source is opened, and hey, who never wanted to
be the project manager of a successful open source project? ('wave' to mark ;-)

As I said: nice piece of work and at the moment the softphone of my choice on
W2k instead of firefly or purtel iaxphone I used before.

Have a nice day and greets from Germany

[Asterisk-Users] IAX2 Softphone

2005-02-01 Thread timebandit001
For all the peoples that wanted to test my windows IAX2 phone, I've
put it up on a server where it can be downloaded.

For the ones that wanted the DLL, it's available on the same page.
For the DLL, I will post a list of the functions in it and the
parameters it expect as soon as I have some free time.

All comments (good or bad) are welcome

The phone can be used mostly with the keyboard :

- Dial with the keypad, press ENTER to start the call
- # is replaced with / for convenience
- Pick up a line with the function keys (F1 for line 1, F2 for line 2)
- ESC to hangup currently selected line

The phone is self contained : the DLL is in the EXE as a ressource,
will extract it if not found.

Waiting for your input
