[Asterisk-Users] Linux flavor?
What Linux distribution is best for use with Asterisk? (easiest compile, least problems, etc) Thanks, Sean Rodger ___ Asterisk-Users mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.digium.com/mailman/listinfo/asterisk-users
RE: [Asterisk-Users] Linux flavor?
Personally, I've compiled Asterisk on Redhat and Debian without any problems on either, I think generally Asterisk compiles very easily no matter what the distro but I would recommend that you use the one you are most comfortable/experienced with. -Original Message- From: Sean Rodger [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 29 July 2003 15:02 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Asterisk-Users] Linux flavor? Re: [Asterisk-Users] Linux flavor?
In my opinion, Debian is the best for compiling programs, because you can 'apt-get' any dependencies and its respective dependencies in a quick and clean way. You can also use auto-apt. And if you don't want to compile, you can 'apt-get install asterisk' and get asterisk running in seconds :-). But, I prefer the cvs version of asterisk. Good advice. Unfortunately, nobody with requisite skill has stepped up to get this thing ported over to FreeBSD (though I recently heard a rumor that someone finally got it built). Nothing personal against Linux, in fact I was highly impressed with the RH9 install last week and will likely end up with it on my laptop if not my desktop, but for servers there are a great many people, including myself, who much prefer BSD over Linux. I can't speak for all BSD users, but for myself, the issue is not so much one of trust, it's a matter of (re)learning the linux way. I originally gave up Linux in favor of FreeBSD because in 1996, FreeBSD was better in many ways, most of which no longer apply (just the asthetic ones). -- Troy Settle Pulaski Networks http://www.psknet.com 540.994.4254 ~ 866.477.5638 Pulaski Chamber 2002 Small Business Of The Year ___ Asterisk-Users mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.digium.com/mailman/listinfo/asterisk-users

It shouldn't be too much of a struggle to adapt Asterisk to FreeBSD, although I haven't tried yet. The real difficulty will be in porting the zaptel drivers over to FreeBSD. BTW, gastman currently compiles and runs on FreeBSD. I'd recommend GTK-2.0, however, over GTK-1.2, as the 1.2 stuff has some critical problems. -Tilghman ___ Asterisk-Users mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.digium.com/mailman/listinfo/asterisk-users

I would love to see FreeBSD support. Any links on the OpenBSD port? bkw On Tue, 29 Jul 2003, Tilghman Lesher wrote: On Tuesday 29 July 2003 09:41, Troy Settle wrote: -Original Message- From: Low, Adam Sent: Tuesday, July 29, 2003 9:15 AM Personally, I've compiled Asterisk on Redhat and Debian without any problems on either, I think generally Asterisk compiles very easily no matter what the distro but I would recommend that you use the one you are most comfortable/experienced with.
