You can do some really fun things interfacing asterisk with IO control
equipment. We use Opto22 Snap Brains and asterisk for various purposes.
Opto provides some nice linux API code examples to interface with their
units. I have a 3D tube laser cutter interfaced to asterisk so that
someone gets called or paged when the cutter runs out of material or an
error occurs, we also control air compressors with asterisk, and can
check on various equipment status.

Someone else replied that they are going to use * to control their
entry gate system by cell phone. Nice.

Thanks for the examples! While reading over at voip-info.org, I found
the auto-dial feature that can be combined with .call files. That
should be perfect for an idea I had -- use cron and POP3 to check my
e-mail account for any new messages from the transit authority... if
there are any, dial/ring home phones at 6am and playback a message to
check e-mail for possible morning commute problems. Not quite as good
as drunkdial though :)

Re: [Asterisk-Users] SOHO Survey / Creative Asterisk Solutions

2005-09-23 Thread Steve Edwards
I have a USB based X10 controller (http://www.smarthome.com/1132u.html --
about US$40) connected to the Asterisk box.

Currently, it controls the sprinklers, kid's tv's and Xmas house lights.

I'm hoping my thermostat will die so I can justify replacing it with an
X10 based unit :)

I also have a TV card
(http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/products/data_goplus.html -- US$25 off
ebay) on the same box.

A couple of years ago, I cobbled up an email interface to the TV card so I
could send an email from my cell to tell it the channel, start time, and
duration to record.

It should be easy to add interfaces to these gadgets to Asterisk so I can
turn off the sprinklers when it starts raining in the middle of the night,
or to schedule a tv recording from the bar when the game's good and my
mates want to run, or to cool down the house when I come home
unexpectedly.

Another thought is to use Asterisk to start recording my favorite talk
radio station off the internet (with mplayer) if I hear something
interesting on the way to work.

Just another cog (Asterisk) in the world's best Tinker Toy set (Linux).

Thanks in advance,

[Asterisk-Users] SOHO Survey / Creative Asterisk Solutions

2005-09-22 Thread Brian McEntire
I hope the subject isn't too buzzword compliant :)

I'm just curious: What have people done with Asterisk? I'm particularly
interested in DIY projects and things that can be done on a small/home
office (or even hobbiest's) budget. If you have clever hacks or
creative functionality you've implemented, I'd love to hear what a few
people have come up with.

Thanks! -Brian

Yes, and it is a fantastic resource! I don't think I could have gotten up and running without it.

I assume you pointed me there because there are some articles about
what people are doing with *. I'll dig for them. I previously read in
an issue of ;Login: several columns discussing things you could do with
Asterisk.

Articles are good, I was just hoping to get a couple of quick ideas
about what people on the list have accomplished. Things like I set up
time and temperature for whenever I dial *22 ... or something like
that. Figured it might be a change for people to show off a bit and for
me to get some ideas/get inspired ;-)

Thanks again for the voip-info ref, I'll work my way through that wiki.On 9/22/05, Damon Estep [EMAIL PROTECTED]
