[Asterisk-Users] small qos switch

2005-03-25 Thread Bob Knight
I have multiple locations running * where all the phone are
on their own lan and all the data is on a separate lan.
The problem is they are sharing the same dsl connection.
The locations are IAX2 trunked together, but it only takes
one data down/up load to just kill the voice.
What I am looking for is a small switch with QoS that I
can stick in ahead of the dsl modem. Plug in one connection
from the voice lan and one from the data lan.
I have found quite a few 24 or 48 port switches that will do
this, but I really do not need anything that big. There are
already switches in place.
Any recommendations please?
thanks, bk...

You can install a bridging firewall loaded with your fav OS
for firewalling that supports qos (Linux, *BSD, Solaris)

Re: [Asterisk-Users] small qos switch

2005-03-25 Thread Asterisk

Hi,The lan is probably not the problem, but the dsl connection is.There are some things you can do that can help to a certain degree.First, set "tos=lowdelay" in your iax.conf.Most routers obey the ToS field.second, try to find out if your firewall (I assume you use one) support QoS.then there is a possibility you can set a QoS or ToS in the rulebase.Maybe you can even set a guaranteed and maximum bandwidth for this rule(at least this is the way I work, but then again I use Juniper/Netscreen firewalls)The third choice is to use a switch that can set port based QoS or ToS,but make sure it is not reset further down the line. But having said that, if your provider does'nt do anything with QoS and/or ToS it might al be useless.Try and find out.RegardsAndre- Oorspronkelijk Bericht -Onderwerp:Â[Asterisk-Users] small qos switchAfzender: ÂBob Knight <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>Aan:Âasterisk-users@lists.digium.comDatum:Â25-03-2005 18:22I have multiple locations running * where all the phone areon their own lan and all the data is on a separate lan.The problem is they are sharing the same dsl connection. The locations are IAX2 trunked together, but it only takesone data down/up load to just kill the voice. What I am looking for is a small switch with QoS that Ican stick in ahead of the dsl modem. I highly recommend m0n0wall (http://www.m0n0.ch/wall/) which is a very
managable FreeBSD based router with traffic shaping capabilities. I run
it on a Soekris Engineering embedded PC just for convenience, though
there is a release for plain vanilla PCs with dual NICs. The PC version
can boot from CD and store its configs on floppy or USB key.

If you run Openwrt (www.openwrt.org) on this box you even can get IPSec
VPN with X509V3 Certificates and a QoS that is really working - all that
on CPE below 100USD. The following story from on of our customers
homeoffices:

DSL-Connection with 1Mbit/s Downstream and 128kbit/s Upstream. WRT54g with
Openwrt as Router/VPN-Gateway. The user has a Snom 190 phone. Application
is mostly terminal server with Citrx metaframe. Complaint from the user:
every time I am on the phone my Citrix-sessions is _so_ slow... (1280x1024
Desktop in Highcolor). Solution of the problem: the phone was set to use
G711u codec - and that did not fit together with the 128kbit/s upstream of
the DSL-Line. But no problem with voice quality at all. QoS configuration
slightly adjusted from the things you find at www.lartc.org .

I heard a great solution at Linux World Boston. A rather talented
young man mentioned using a IPV6 VPN on the IPV4 internet. IPV6
supports QOS by default. Just VPN straight back to the CO and have
your POP there so you only need one firewall too.

You could also get an old, cheap computer off eBay put it between the
switch(es) and the dsl modem, install linux and then use it to do your
QoS prioritization. Not very elegant or professional looking, but it
would work if you don't care about such niceties.

You can buy 400 series servers from Dell for around $350, new. Run your
firewall (iptables) and NAT on that computer. You can get a Sangoma DSL
PCI card for about $115--it has QoS. You'll have professional grade
infrastructure for not that much money. What's not elegant about that?

I don't want to move this thread towards a discussion of Sveasoft, but
I would ask anyone considering this option to make sure they do some
reading about Sveasoft and their version of "opensource" before
sending them a check.

IMHO, Do the community a favor and check out OpenWRT (see earlier
posting in this thread) or one of the other options instead of
supporting Sveasoft.

Maybe because the Sangoma card will run circles around it purely from a

He may have been talented, just not in network engineering.

While your IPv6 encapsulated VPN would have QOS, the underlying
transport medium (IPv4) still would not (if it didn't have it before).
Furthermore, if any Ipv4 hops in between would have prioritized your
traffic higher based on its type, they now have no idea what is is,
because it's encapsulated.

RE: [Asterisk-Users] small qos switch

2005-03-29 Thread Jay Milk
I found sveasoft to be more restrictive than HyperWRT -- Sveasoft
doesn't know about IAX, nor does it let you configure additional ports
(as far as I've seen). HyperWRT seems to do the job fine, however.

I used Sveasoft but later shifted to OpenWrt for it's openness and
flexibility.

Check this at
http://openwrt.org/OpenWrtDocs/About?action=show&redirect=OpenWrt

I find this much more flexible as the underlying framework of the code
building is same as Asterisk - Open Platform with many hooks possible.

VPN functionality is a big deal and the OpenVPN support OpenWRT speaks
of may not follow the IPSec spec since it's not listed on the VPN
conformance test:
http://www.vpnc.org/testing.html

The Sveasoft has multiple firmwares and only one can be loaded at a
given time so that's another limitation.

So there's no promise it'll interopperate or do everything you want. On
the open source conformance, Sveasoft addresses this directly on their
own forums:
http://www.sveasoft.com/modules/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2823

If it works...it works. Take it for what it is.

Re: [Asterisk-Users] small qos switch

2005-03-31 Thread Moody
Lee,

While the FSF is taking Sveasoft's claims at face value they are lies.
Ask Sveasoft when they last released sourcecode for the GPL project
they are working on. My understanding is that it wasn't since
Christmas which was over 3 releases ago. Seems to me they are
violating the exact words of the FSF which they "follow".

As for the actions of Sveasoft check out the following request to
google - they are accusing a site of copyright violations for
distributing GPL software... yes.. distributing GPL software is
apparently against copyright?

http://www.chillingeffects.org/dmca512/notice.cgi?NoticeID=1471

Quote from above link: "profiting from the unauthorized distribution
of our copyrighted works "

It's all a little much for me...
