How about accepting the call into rxfax, and then creating a call file
which will re-send the fax to it's real destination. ie, asterisk will
receive the fax, and then send it, instead of just transparently acting
as a gateway ?

perhaps, in between the receive and send you might use scp to copy the
file to the remote asterisk server, and then ssh to create the call file
on the remote asterisk

Hi,

if you are interested in t.38 gatewaying you may try fax gateway that has
been posted recently: http://bugs.digium.com/view.php?id=13405. I'm looking
forwards seeing any reports.

Best regards

Re: [asterisk-users] FAX t.38 on Asterisk 1.6?

2008-08-08 Thread Olivier
Hello,

I asked myself the same questions as obviously, Asterisk 1.6 introduces new
T.38 functions and it's still a bit difficult to know what's really missing
to set a system up just as you suggested.

Is it possible to use Asterisk as a T.30/T.38 gateway ?
If positive, which software are needed, beside Asterisk itself (asterisk,
libpri, asterisk-addons, ...) ?

PS:
Arturo, where did you get t38modem ?
Last time I checked, I was a bit scared to download an obsolete version.

 Dear list,

 I got this scenario…

 FAX Machine - FXS (tdm800) -Asterisk - SIP - OPENSER - SIP -
 Asterisk - FXO(tdm400) - PSTN - FAX Machine

I’ been reading a lot of Faxes and t.38 protocol... and I found that
Asterisk 1.6 has the possibility to do FAX t.38 Gateway funtion...and
also that CallWeaver (Asterisk Fork) also has this feature.

Well, i can definitly confirm that CallWeaver is able to originate and
terminate T.38 Faxes.

In the scenario above the FAX Machine at the end would be obsolete.

The open issue would be the conversion between analog fax and T.38 fax.
Does anybody has a smart solution
how the following could be achieved?
- Detect incoming analog fax (from PSTN)
- Translate incoming analog fax to T.38
- Transmit fax per IP to another box (maybe a long distance)
- Translate incoming T.38 fax to analog fax
- Terminate fax on a normal analog fax machine

With this scenario it would be possible to use the old fax machine you
already have, but also use reliable fax transmission over IP.

Someone send you a Fax using t.28 and this software

 working installation of Iaxmodem+asterisk+hylafax working.

The problem seems to be on the implementation of some application to handle
the t38 gateway capability of the Asterisk Server.

 I've read this article http://bugs.digium.com/view.php?id=12931 but it's
 closed.

Ooh, this is cool thing. However i'm afraid because of the mentioned
performance issues.I wonder why it was closed, there was a patch for
trunk, if some developer would help making it stable - it would be
great addition. It would allow simple
Hylafax-Iaxmodem-Asterisk-SIP-T38 gateway implementation.

Last week i've been trying to get up and running T38modem, and most
what i can get out of it is the following setup: Hylafax - T38modem
- Asterisk - T38modem - Hylafax.

Any attempt to send calls to provider fails. I've been going to other
front and tried CallWeaver, it really can send T38 faxes to provider,
so i was thinking of implementing virtual modem in Hylafax to send
calls trough CallWeaver (CallWeaverModem :D).

Origination and termination is exactly that. That means Asterisk is
either originating the fax, or receiving the fax. Asterisk is the
endpoint. This is supported for both regular fax and T.38 using the
app_fax module in Asterisk 1.6, which requires spandsp 0.0.5.

Gateway support is the ability to have a fax going through Asterisk as
analog on one side and T.38 on the other. This is not yet support,
but is obviously on the roadmap. I can't give you an estimation for
when it will be done and officially supported right now, though.

Err, Origination would be the fax originates from the server and then
gets sent as T.38.
Termination would be an incoming T.38 signal comes in and gets
interpreted at the server.
and Gateway would be when you have a signal from a fax machine that the
server then converts to a T.38 signal (as in the T38Gateway app in
callweaver).

Or am I missing something?
