client - works well and is only a sip phone :)

everybody sees a need to do that, though backgrounder by itself would be
a very good reason to do it...

I personally have not had much luck with these softphones because the  
iPhone 3G seems to be underpowered and just doesn't run them well  
enough to sustain good voice quality, irrespective of wifi network  
conditions.  I could be mistaken, though.

It's not going to happen over ATT's 3G network -- not down here in  
the southeastern US, as far as I can tell.  So I can't speak to  
whether voice works over 3G.

I find that Siphone works great on the iTouch. Tried it with my own
asterisk box as well as Callcentric and MagicJack and it was very
clear and stable. Haven't played with it since the last firmware
update though as the update removed support for 3rd party headsets .

Each of the above are SIP based, I have seen 1 or 2 IAX soft-phones in

WeePhone SIP, just found that one will looking for the URL of the other
2.

I have tried every sip phone offered on Apple's APP store (as of three weeks
ago) and the only one that worked well for me was iPico and I think I paid
$10.00 or so for it.

Siax is working great for me and as far as I know/remember well, you  
can get it from the app store for a reasonable price. It supports SIP  
and IAX2 and works easy with Asterisk.
