[asterisk-users] zap not coming online on fedora 8

2008-04-29 Thread bilal ghayyad
Hi All;

So what should I do now to remove that bug? Any
advise?

Regards
Bilal

(Just a reminder that if this is indeed the case then
this is a bug
inflicted by me and fixed later by sruffell. Makes me
feel like the
glassmaker sending the kid to break the window)

Re: [asterisk-users] zap not coming online on fedora 8

2008-04-27 Thread Steve Totaro
Bilal,

I do not use the init scripts. I use rc.local to load my drivers and
start asterisk or safe_asterisk.

Thanks,
Steve Totaro

Re: [asterisk-users] zap not coming online on fedora 8

2008-04-28 Thread bilal ghayyad
Hi Steve;

The problem related to version zaptel 1.4.10.

I just discover that it might be related to init
script because every thing running on the same machine
if I used svn to get the source and compile it, but
ofcourse I will not get the zaptel 1.4.10 version
using svn (maybe it depends on the commands I used to
get it).

Now, if after that, I get zaptel 1.4.10 and compiled
it, then the driver will be loaded also fine when
machine booted and no error will appear while booting.

This is maybe because the init script was fine with
the version I downloadedusing svn (which is not
1.4.10), and it look like the init script that coming
with 1.4.10 is not good or maybe for my environment is
not good.

The idea that, existed init script will not be
overwrite with new init script, or maybe new versions
missing to do something that old vesions do it .. I am
not able to know.

About the using for the /etc/rc.local: this is new for
me, so for that I would like to know that based on
what u decided to add the below? How I can do it for
each card and so on? From where I can get data on how
to do it? Also, why u used rc.local?

Last thing: Any advise about the reason the init.d is
failing sometimes, and if it is related to
safe_asterisk or to something else?

Regards
Bilal

Bilal,

I do not use "make config".

I manually enter whatever startup sequence is required
to load drivers
and start asterisk in /etc/rc.local. Below is an
example of an
rc.local for a machine running a with a quad port BRI
card, and a quad
port analog Sangoma card (4FXO). I am not sure if
what I do is
considered "best practice" but it works for me and I
know just where
to look if there are issues. Maybe someone else can
chime in if there
are any reasons why "make config" is superior to my
method.

/etc/rc.local
#!/bin/sh
#
# This script will be executed *after* all the other
init scripts.
# You can put your own initialization stuff in here if
you don't
# want to do the full Sys V style init stuff.

exec 2>>/tmp/boot.log
exec >&2
echo "= starting to boot: `date`
="
set -x

touch /var/lock/subsys/local
/sbin/modprobe qozap
/usr/sbin/wanrouter start
/sbin/ztcfg -vv
/usr/sbin/fxotune -s
/usr/sbin/safe_asterisk

Thanks,
Steve Totaro

Re: [asterisk-users] zap not coming online on fedora 8

2008-04-28 Thread Steve Totaro
Bilal,

I cannot comment on the init scripts because I don't use them.

Since nobody chimed in that using rc.local was not optimal, I suspect
it is perfectly acceptable and has worked for me just fine on MANY
installs. Finally, instead of having to do some fishing in
/var/log/asterisk and /var/log/messages, the error (if any) is usually
right near the end of the log file making it easier to find.

Also, if you are using qozap, wanrouter, ztdummy (insert card here) it
makes a difference in what order the drivers are loaded and it seems
very clear to me that using rc.local makes it simple.

I got into Asterisk six years ago or so, I do not believe "make
config" was an option back then and if it was, I like to load
everything myself. I also like the fact that rc.local runs after all
the other init scripts.

Safe_asterisk should not be an issue, it should just restart asterisk
if it crashes, apologies if I gave you the wrong idea. The only
problem with safe_asterisk is that it keeps scrolling along if
Asterisk fails to load. I guess you could kill it in top.

Hope that makes things a little more clear. My example in this thread
should give you an idea of how easy and clear it is.

Thanks,
Steve Totaro

Tzafrir said rc.local wasn't optimal and that's right.
Starting/stopping services - that's what init scripts are meant for.

What about S99 if you prefer to start asterisk after everything
else?

On the other hand, nothing's _really_ wrong with rc.local, apart
from what Tzafrir explained.

It can be bad if it actually hides the real problem.

I asked the OP twice for some additional information, and got no reply
so far.

Ah, I missed Tzafrir's post. I just use "stop when convenient" or
"stop now" from the CLI, and sometimes just control-c, habit I guess.
Wanrouter stop/start works just fine.

I might add that sooner or later dependencies between init.d
scripts will be honored (Debian Lenny, not sure about Fedora)
so services which do not depend on each other can be started
in parallel. That's not possible with rc.local.

And I like modular things. :-)

Tzafrir,

He has been asking me questions directly, off-list so I have been
CCing the list because my advice is often far from the best "solution"
in many cases.

Just curious, how can it "hide the real problem"?

Bilal,

qozap is the driver for the BRI card and wanrouter is for the Sangoma
card. Your's will be a bit different since you are not using either.
The one below should work for you I would think.

touch /var/lock/subsys/local
/sbin/modprobe wctdm
/sbin/ztcfg -vv
/usr/sbin/fxotune -s
/usr/sbin/safe_asterisk

Google and the wiki are your friends.
http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/Asterisk+fxotune
"Using Fxotune: You need to train fxotune once using fxotune -i, see
more below about that. The training will create the file

When you load wctdm, it will also load zaptel.

The first part of your question is yes and no. With patches or
additional drivers, zaptel works with other cards (such as Sangoma and
various BRI cards). I think Dialogic may be supported now but I am
not sure, maybe in ABE, again I am not sure.

I am not sure if I understand the last part of your question. I think
just about any card should work for you provided it has drivers for
Asterisk.

Re: [asterisk-users] zap not coming online on fedora 8

2009-06-09 Thread bilal ghayyad

Hi Steve;

Currently with Dahdi, for the below configuration that we were using it in the
rc.local, how it will be?

I think there should be something new to be used instead of ztcfg, what it is?
And what about other lines? They need to be changed?

touch /var/lock/subsys/local
/sbin/modprobe wctdm
/sbin/ztcfg -vv
/usr/sbin/fxotune -s
/usr/sbin/safe_asterisk

Regards
Bilal
