Is that aiff format (as defined by Apple, et al)?

It would be good to have uncompressed copies of all of the publicly
available prompts. Having to transcode from gsm to other codecs can
demonstrate noticeable anomalies. And not just for voip -- I can
hear them on my cell phone too, just from gsm -> ulaw -> whatever
the cell uses.

As a non-donor, I probably have no right to speak, so, of course, I will
be first :)
My recommendation is to listen to each of the sounds recorded. I don't
remember which, but I seem to have the impression that some recordings
sounded much better than others, especially when using the Voicemail
app. Some words just seemed to be recorded in an empty bathroom while
others sounded really good. Would it be a good use to re-record any
files that don't sound, ummm, optimal?
[snip]

If you can identify the sounds about which you're speaking, let me
know and I'll re-clip them.

For this iteration, I'll probably submit the files to my website in
both .aif and in .gsm, and you can re-encode the .aif's if you think
it sounds bad. The .aif's are "near-perfect" quality, as best as I
can tell from the original recordings that I was given.

If you're talking about verbiage or utterance problems, then that's a
different story - Allison has been easy to deal with in getting that
stuff repaired for free.

I'll plug her site again: http://www.theivrvoice.com/ - she's fast,
professional, and (relatively) cheap, and her voice will match all
your other Asterisk recordings.

As far as food vs. more recordings: we have two votes for food, no
votes for more recordings. Jared, your additional contribution
comment for food has been noted. :-)

So help me God, the next person that comments on "knots" vs. "knots
per hour" will have a corefile mailed to them. If you're that
concerned either way, you can cut the soundfiles up or paste parts
together to make whatever phrase you want after I put them up on my
website. Shut up about it already; this list is busy enough with
"real" issues.

I will try to have the remaining files done this evening, but I doubt
that will happen as it's getting late already and it will take a
surprising amount of time to chop things up and label them correctly,
as it's a very tedious and mouse-intensive job. It'll be done when
it's done.

I'm not sure how regular miles are based on but a nautical mile is a degree
of longitude divided by 60 (hence it takes 360 * 60 knots to travel around
the world (or am i wrong)). I'm not too familar with your crazy measurement
system (metric all the way baby) but i'm sure someone here will know what

I vote for the food proposal... I've bought Krispy Kremes for the guys
at Digium, but it's been awhile. I think it would be a nice "thank

Well at the bottom of that very page is:

Usage Note: In nautical usage knot is a unit of speed, not of distance,
and has a built-in meaning of "per hour." Therefore, a ship would strictly
be said to travel at ten knots (not ten knots per hour)

So, a knot is not a unit of linear measurement. A "Nautical Mile" is linear.
A knot, is speed.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the Allison fund! I actually
ended up with more money than I think it will take, which warms my
heart to see so many people putting their money where their mouths
are (or where Allison's mouth is?)

I put forward the following proposal (as this is Open Source, we'll
let General Consensus decide):

Any funds left over after payment to Allison will be used to fund
either more words from Allison in the "next round" (there is always
a next round of words) or will go to buying beer/food for Digium
staff at the discretion of John Todd.
I expect the leftover funds will be around $50-$60, depending on how
much time the list takes Allison.

Knot (Naut.)
   (a) A division of the log line, serving to measure the
rate of the vessel's motion. Each knot on the line
bears the same proportion to a mile that thirty
seconds do to an hour. The number of knots which run
off from the reel in half a minute, therefore, shows
the number of miles the vessel sails in an hour.
   Hence:
   (b) A nautical mile, or 6080.27 feet; as, when a ship
goes eight miles an hour, her speed is said to be
   eight knots.

Webster's Dictionary lists both usages:

knot = "one nautical mile per hour" and "one nautical mile", and mentions
the second one as "not used technically".

As I pilot myself, I'm pretty sure that "knot" (or "knots") is the commonly
used form (by itself).

or better still...

1 knot = 1 nautical mile per hour = 6076 feet per hour
1 mph =1 mile per hour = 5280 feet per hour

I'm sorry, I missed that (mostly because the Wiki is lackig the
explanation for these sound files). For the sake of sea weather report
completion - whoever uses that, I don't - it might be necessary to add
"sea", "wave" and "waves" as well.

Next to that I'll include a list of recordings that I found to be useful.
I am not sure if "phone system" is a proper English term, I just tried to
avoid "Asterisk" and "PBX" as many normal phone users will not able to
understand these.

- "The phone system will be temporarily unavailable. No calls can be made
or received during this maintainance period."
- "The phone system is up and running! Thank you for your patience."
- "The Asterisk P B X will be restarted immediately. All current calls
will be interrupted."

Finally I don't know about the status of the recently announced (C-coded)
calling card application concerning its voice prompts. For my little LCR
(least cost router) solution I use these self-recorded files:

- Attempting a voice over i p connection:
- You have spent
- Euro (note: not "Euros"!)
- point
- this month.
- Your credit amounts to
- The approximate charge for this call is
- per minute.
- billed in

- You have exceeded the (cost) limit by
- This call was terminated due to 0 credit.

Greetings, Philipp

You might want to do John a favor and go ahead and remove words
that already exist. For example, third, sixth, and eighth are already
ordinals that have sounds (digits/h-3, digits/h-6, digits/h-8) in
Asterisk.

I don't know where to look to find out if these phrases already exist, so
forgive me if they do. These are both used on my NorTel Modular ICS for
call transfer screening. I am lurking and discussing ways to do this
off-line and I believe these would be good to have for this feature.

For exact intonation of the below, please ask the golden throat to dial

RE: [Asterisk-Users] More words for Allison

2004-01-11 Thread calvis
I just sent $20.00 to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am new to the list so I don't really know what I am donating to, but the
whole Asterisk program sounds pretty cool and I hope to work myself to
setting up an experimental system to play with it in the near future.

Here's the latest batch of words to get shipped out to Allison Smith.
Please submit reasonably small changes to me by tomorrow 10:00 AM Eastern
time, and I'll add them.

As usual, donations to what will be a ~$110 USD expense would be
appreciated, as I am paying for this round out of my pocket. Please send to
paypal address "[EMAIL PROTECTED]". I did not include all possible symbols
on a North American keyboard, as it was getting exhausting and possibly
silly.

I'm a land-lubber, but I think knots is a speed unit (like Miles Per Hour),
so I think you want "knots" here, not "knots per hour", if you are talking
wind speed.

One small request:

"All Your Base Are Belong To Us"

(Grammar deliberately wrong)
Optionally a second recording spoken in a monotone.

Cheers,
