Re: [asterisk-users] Fring: Open VPN client to be installed on the mobile, which mobile?

2008-10-27 Thread bilal ghayyad
Why u r assuming UNIX? There are open vpn that works with windows.

OK, let us go with UNIX idea, the question is which mobile that can run UNIX or
embeded version of UNIX?

As I know that mobiles have special OS which is not UNIX and not normal windows
(like xp, vista, 98, NT, 2000, 2003).

I might need to ask the question in another way:

Did anyone try Open VPN client on the Nokia Communicator or any mobile phone?
What was the used OS with that mobile?

Mach is a very low-level component of the Mac OS-X . It is not related
to UNIX-like functionality. It is originally used as a micro-kernel, but
in the OSX is is not quite so. On top of it there is some code derived
from FreeBSD. But on top of that there are other layers.

And anyway, I'm not so sure iphone would allow you to mess with its
networking stack that way (likewise for any limited app running jailed
on a phone).

Of course you would have to jailbreak it.
Or you can try Openmoko, which is pure Linux.

Given that there's already Asterisk running on the OpenMoko, I bet
openvpn is there as well :-)

They also have something for a Nokia, check out their download link:

Also, if you do some Google searching you will see lots of commercial VPN

 compatible.

 Hi All;

I do not know if anyone faced such case in dealing with open vpn (as
we need it for fring to be used from the mobile:

Which mobile can be used to install the open vpn client on it, so we
can use it to do a vpn channel with the server that has open vpn
 server?

You might have better luck looking for mobile devices that natively
support Cisco's VPN client, iPhone, etc.

Also, your VPN may not work the way you think it will if Fring is in
the middle of your call traffic flow.

Why do you want to use fring on a Nokia as they have a very good SIP

Speaking of fring, I just got my brand new iphone 3G. Anyone have any
comments on how well fring or any other sip client (siphon?) works on
iphone?

For example will the app utilize the iphone contact database?

Cheers,

I do not like fring. It's buggy, it's unstable, it looks goofy -- but I
have to say that yes, the SIP client appears to work. It won't reinvite off
of their servers, though, so your audio path goes through them all the time.

I need to learn how to write iphone apps and just write a simple
straightforward SIP phone for it.

I second this.

Yes it is difficult to find a plain SIP client not tied to a service.
siphon is the best I have found so far.

I'm of the same mind if I cannot find something that works even slightly.
I don't suppose there are standard C libraries available :( The world is
forcing JAVA on us.

Film at 11.

There is the C++ SIP stack associated with OpenSBC, but I do not know if
it is any good. It seems kind of simplistic. Then again, that may be
exactly what you're looking for.
