Why use .call files when Asterisk Manager will allow direct interfacing?

I might be interested in doing this, but would prefer the implementation
do be GPL'd.  Feel free to prompt discussion on the commercial list or
private email.

Because it was easier to write (more like hack up in 5 minutes) and it
was going to run from the asterisk server anyways.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for but we've played around with
JIAXClient and wrapping it with Javascript and Flex/Actionscript to create a
custom UI (e.g. button, flash).
