I've been running devel from monday 13h 
(cfa0f1e910855a04b98d46bda14183dea421d2f8) before writing this mail.
In the meantime I tried removing package/kernel/mac80211/patches/5(6|7).*.patch 
and it currently looks like it helps.

 One more thing, the clients you're talking about - are these 802.11n
 clients or 802.11a/b/g legacy?

these are 802.11n capable clients but I disabled 802.11n in hostapd 
(ieee80211n=0).

 those have been running for for some hours and I could not reproduce the 
 problem anymore, although before it used to reproduce quickly.
