Re: Disability versus ability

Blindness is legally and socially speaking a disability, whatever you make of it. If we want to analyse disability in a different way, then disability is classified as something else, regardless of whether one is blind or not. That I can use my iPhone with voiceover is my ability; that a sighted person cannot use an iPhone with voiceover is his disability. That I can get some information that many sighted individuals cannot get through hearing is my ability and respectively their disability. However, disability in terms of what one has or owns as opposed to what one can do or cannot do, is a totally diffrent concept. Disability in the case of having a physical/mental/sensory limitation should by no means be disregarded or avoided because that way we are partly and sometimes largely denying what we have and what we should live with everyday. Of course there are workarounds and this is definitely the best time to be blind because many issues we have have been considered, reproduced and solved; however that doesn't mean we are not blind or that the disability is totally overcome. It's true that sometimes we can do what our sighted counterparts cannot do; it is true that we are skilled, that we have impeccable memory and stuf of this nature, but this comes always as a result of the struggle of our brain for communication and information. The lack of sight as well plays a significant role because our brain is not fludded with information that we would otherwise get if we were not blind: the colour of one's hair, the colour of one's jacket, the brand of one's glasses, one's look and movement and the whole body language is separate information that the brain has to process and this of course involves energy and effort. Our brain, however, is focused somewhere else and that enables us to perfection some skills that we acquire due to blindness. Have you ever thought about how different your lives would be if you weren't blind? How many of us would have this lifestyle that we have today. To conclude what I have said, and to lay out my viewpoint, blindness in our case is a disability and anything else is wordplay or philosophical discussion that won't lead us anywhere. Thankfully, just as in other facets of life, many of the chritical issues we have are solved and this is probably the time where people with visual impairments can make the best out of their lives and achieve what three/four decades ago was unthinkable. My idea is, teach your sighted friends, colleagues and anyone close to you that you can do most of the things they can but in an alternative way which leads to the same result, and they will be really happy to accept who and how you are.

Re: Trimps

Hi,I've been a trimps player for a little over a year now, just got back into it a few months ago and have managed to over double my HZE since returning to it. Hey it's a fantastic game, what can I say. I decided to contribute to this topic to offer some help with the player spire mechanic. Believe it or not, it is actually usable if you're willing to work around the horrible UI quality. I don't believe the player spire is immediately critical, but later on the bonuses get quite good so it's important to learn your way around the UI at some point. So here goes. The UI consists entirely of clickables, so let's start at the top and arrow our way through. Before we get started, be sure to maximize the window of your browser. For whatever reason at least with NVDA, things aren't picked up properly if the window isn't big enough. Ok, let's get started. The first thing that will appear past the table that's always at the bottom of the screen is the spire itself. The player starts off with one floor consisting of five cells, and you're able to unlock more by completing objectives which we'll get to. Each square is recognized by NVDA as a clickable space. As you arrow down, your cursor starts at the top left and moves to the right until the sixth clickable, at which point it jumps down to the second row of squares if there is one, starting at the left most square in that row and moving to the right, and so on. As you unlock floors, they'll appear at the top as five new squares and will thus be the first ones you arrow down past. Here's the confusing part. Much like the world, enemies actually enter your spire from the bottom left, travel to the right, and ascend to the next floor when they reach the right side, something we can't accurately represent with a screen reader since our cursor starts at the top left or the bottom right depending on whether you're scrolling up or down. As you place traps and towers in your spire, you'll have to get good at making this flip in your mind, as the placement of things is very important to maximize damage. Just imagine a grid of 5 squares across by however many floors you have, and visualize the path enemies take as they start from the bottom left corner, travel to the right most column, ascend to the next floor and appear on the left side again.  You may also notice numbers appearing in different places. These are enemies traveling on the grid, and the numbers are each enemy's health. You can try to follow them to get a feel for how they move and are damaged, but honestly it's not all that helpful because of the way screen readers work.Directly beneath the spire grid is the tutorial text that guides you through building the first 10 or so floors of your spire. Beneath this are some numbers that I haven't figured out the meaning of yet. I just know they're very annoying and have a tendency to trap my cursor, so just hammer the arrow fast or press control end or something to get past it. Next are your stats like runestones, spirestones etc. Then we have a bunch of buttons, all of which are self-explanatory or explained in the Wiki, which you should really be reading if you're not already. And now we have perhaps the most important section, the one with which we select the implements of destruction to place in our spire. Each button is a toggle kind of like a radio button. Press the button, then press a square on the grid to place a trap or tower. No need to press it each time, it will remain selected until you select another type. If you select a square with something already on it, and you have a different type selected than what's on that square, the two will be swapped. This is really handy, and basically makes the sell button pointless. And finally we have the unlabeled close button with a handy separator by it, though of course you can always press escape to close the spire window. Now for some tips. First off, since obviously the grid doesn't indicate at all what is placed on it, you should create a model somewhere else to remind yourself what is placed where. This can be a spreadsheet, a piece of gridded braille paper, pipe cleaners and tape, whatever you want it to be as long is it's representative to you. Come up with symbols to represent each type of thing you have placed, and make a key so you don't forget them. Me? I chose the good old plain ascii text file, which I will paste below as an example.f=frosti=fires=strengthl=lightningk=knowledgep=poisonc=condenseri i f i is i i f if i i i fI'm still fairly early on so it's missing a lot of the later types but you get the idea. Also, I recommend pausing the spire while making any modifications to avoid any frustrations as enemies move and bump your cursor around, as you're going to have to do a lot of counting and arrowing especially as your spire gets bigger. Remember the sell all button as well, if the spire doesn't seem to match your model you can press it and start over with no consequences. Hope thi

Downloading Version 1 of VIPMUD if you don't have a key for Version 2

So I have some birthday money and want to buy VIP Mud so I can play some MUD's that I've not been able to play before. The weird thing is, on the site, they say if I don't have a product key to download version 1, but also it says version 1 is less compatible with Windows 10, the OS I have. What should I do? I'd rather start with Version 2, since it's more compatible with Windows 10.

Sorry for the confusion with the readme, I have updated it it and the installation and setup steps should be more clear. I was also wrong about the itch.io version of the game; I thought someone I know was playing the game with it but it turns out it was the steam version and there is no itch.io version (I think there may have been one in the past and it was removed). The only supported version of the game as of now is the Steam version. If the mod does work on other platforms, such as the version of the game on game pass, please let me know.

Say the Spire, a Slay the Spire Accessibility Mod

This summer I have been working on a mod for Slay the Spire that provides screen reader accessibility. My goal is to provide a mod that is as close to the visual gaming experience as possible.Public Beta 1 of the mod is now ready. Since the mod is in beta, not all of the planned features are fully implemented. Note that for now the mod only works with game controllers and keyboard support is not yet implemented. The mod can be downloaded from GitHub https://github.com/bradjrenshaw/say-the-spire/ and installation instructions are also on that page. The Steam Workshop page for the mod can be found here. If this link shows an error give it an hour or two and it should work.

Turkish names can be read by synthesizers. There's about 3 or 4 users on here that use their name, at least, I think they do, and their names are read by eSpeak.Besides, the turkish alphabet is very similar to english, only difference I think is they have 28 letters where as english has 26.

If this link shows an error give it an hour or two and it should work.(edit)Sorry for the confusion regarding the installation, I'm working on updating the readme and should have a better readme posted later today. To clarify, it is possible to run the itch.io version of the game, however you need to copy the mod manually to install it, this goes for any dependencies.(/edit)

Re: Say the Spire, a Slay the Spire Accessibility Mod

@nolan steam workshop allows you to upload user content for a game (mods, guides, videos, etc) and I think it lets you upload your own games too somehow which can have their own pages. If you install the game then go to the steam workshop link in the first post and click subscribe, steam should automatically download the mod. Launching it is another matter (I forgot to provide a link for the easier cmd file, to use as a shortcut). I'll update the readme to make that clearer. For now if you follow the second step for getting the game to run it should work.@blindndangerous I'm planning on implementing the ability to read the leaderboards. I can't do anything about the game preventing your runs from being posted to them though unfortunately.

Nifty, been looking forward to this after watching some of Brandon's streams of it.I'm a bit confused after reading the README, though. I only recently started using Steam. Does using Steam Workshop obviate the need for the other startup/installation methods, or do I need to do one or more of those too? I have no clue what Steam Workshop is, though I can certainly make assumptions. I'm happy to get this on Steam and do some Steam-related magic if it makes launching this easier, but I don't know which if any of the startup methods I'd be interested in for that. Thanks for doing this work.

I've been beta testing this for a while.  It's eaten most of my free time for a bit now.  The game's learning curve is intense, but the mod's isn't.  Copy files into place and start it and you're done.  You'll be losing repeatedly, but that's because that's the slay the spire experience, not because accessibility (I think it took 50+ runs for my first win. Others do it faster and consistently. I do not yet know how they pull that off...).

Re: Kanji and other nonstandard characters should not be allowed in userna

That's part of the problem though. They -are named, just not in a way that appeals to our English-speaking sensibilities. If they speak on the forum, they usually either run their text through a translator or have some English skills. If you see a person with an odd name, I don't see any reason why they can't politely be asked what they'd prefer to be called by people who don't readily have the capability of typing their chosen name. As far as responding to them goes, post number can be used. i.e., @post 33, that's actually a really good idea...or whatever the case may be.The reality is that your anonymity hinges on two things. First, your willingness to engage with the community in the first place. Second, your ability to keep your personal life down. If I wanted to, I'm perfectly capable of making a new account, using a VPN, and none of you would know who I was, where I came from, or even my gender. If you really want to be anonymous, it's possible to do that. These non-English-named folks don't have a leg up here, because eventually their style, the things they talk about, and other defining features of their forum existence will percolate into the forum's consciousness, the same way my verbosity and your shit-stirring have. Eventually people will just know that person x has qualities 1 2 and 3, irrespective of the immediate legibility of their name.

Re: Now fully playable, GrimQuest, retro dungeon crawler for android

Hey guys, its been over 2 months since my last post, but I just wanted to let you all know that this game has seen a significant amount of additional content including but not limited to: the addition of fire arms and explosives, the edition of pets, quite a few new backgrounds, skills, spells, areas both in and out of town, quite a few new random events, a proper armor slot with armor to fill it with,, a highly adjustable gameplay experience with 4 difficulty levels, dungeon size, event frequency, and much more.I've been hopelessly addicted to this game all week trying to see how far I can make it on hard-core difficulty and permadeath. Farthest I got was a little ways past thenfirst boss, and had my gear and stats to where the dungeons were not so difficult anymore, but as always, a risky move cost me the game. Finally, it seems the game is easiest to play with talkback since with voice assistant your focus jumps back to the top of the screen after moving your avatar, making it harder to keep track of where you are. If you are on android and have yet to give this game a go or haven't checked in in a while, I encourage you to come and play. I have also updated gameplay instructions in the original post to reflect the changes made to the game.

Re: Kanji and other nonstandard characters should not be allowed in userna

Well names like that might not even translate well into English. I don't want to take anyone's name away, though I do feel a bit weird that certain people due to their character set have a kind of anonymity that none of us do. If it were on a site like Reddit, I'd never even notice. But here is a different story. We have over 200K users, but most of them aren't active and probably 75% or more are bots. This makes the active userbase somewhat small to the point where you know most names you see. Of course we have lurkers who come out every once in a blue moon and people who post a bit less frequently, but still the numbers are smaller. It's a bit weird to me that these people aren't named. I'm not sure I see it as my problem to fix that either, as it is they who are coming onto an English speaking forum with a writing script that isn't compatible with a good bit of our users' configurations.

Re: Kanji and other nonstandard characters should not be allowed in userna

Okay. I've thought about it, and here's my own take on this.1. Offensive usernames are edge casesIf a username, in any language, is offensive, we can straight-up change it, or request that it be changed. If a username is offensive in another language besides English, I don't think we have any languages used here where only one user uses them. In other words, we'd be relying on the community; if you see a truly offensive username, report it or pop off a message to a friendly mod/admin, and we can investigate. If you help us in this, I see no reason why this couldn't be easily enforced, unless someone shows up who primarily speaks a really niche language that nobody else here knows or is at all familiar with, which also happens to not use a Latin character set. I'm not sure I see the sense in changing a rule or forcing a change for what amounts to an edge case.2. There's a difference between posts and usernamesWhile a username identifies a person, a post has specific and context-sensitive information. The rule which asks people to use English is primarily intended for posts, because this is how you interact with other users. Put a different way, usernames are passive, while posts are active. There's a far greater chance of harm with an active aspect of communication than a passive one. Again, this doesn't mean a person can't be vulgar or offensive with their username, it simply means that the rule was meant for potentially offensive posts. It also bears mentioning that a username may, in some cases, act as a matter of identity for someone. Asking them to adopt English conventions for something which may be meaningful to them isn't racist, per se, but I would say it's questionable. My feeling here is to leave this alone, but to approach problematic usernames on a case-by-case basis. There are so few active users with non-Latin characters in their usernames that it would be easy enough to vet those which exist and to keep abreast of those which arise.

Re: Wow

@30, its not about security at all, its the complexity of accomplishing autofill in a desktop application written in Node.JS. In the browser they can just look at the DOM and find the appropriate fields and use JS to fill those fields with data. The desktop has no such system. They would need to do an auto-it like interface to have that work in those apps, because windows does not allow you to directly modify any random app. I'm not precisely sure what would be required to do that but it wouldn't be easy, especially in Node.JS (if I'm not mistaken).

Re: Disability versus ability

@8, thumbs up. I view things the same way. Whilee I see my blindness for what it is, its not stopping me from living my life. And yes, I might not be able to drive or do a lot of stuff completely on my own, but i've learned to live with it. That is not to say that we are completely incapable of doing said stuff. Granted not on our own of course, but if we have people who are willing, then yes, we can do stuff we normally cant do. Take flying as an example. i've piloted a plane more than once. While i'm fully aware this is a impossibility to do alone and i'll never be able to get it 100percent, I have done it with people who have been willing to let me have that experience. I believe there is a massive problem here; when people say or think about disability, they are automaticly in a mindset of, I cant do so and so, even if the opportunity where to present itself in front of them, I.e: someone asking if they would like to pilot a aircraft for instance. The problem is that many people when saying, i'mm disabled, put such a barrier that even when the opportunity presents itself to do something they normally couldn't do on their own, they think, I cant do it. Yes, i'm blind. Yes, i have a disability. Yes, it has its limitations and whatnot, but I'm not one to let those limitations become more than what they are.

People have requested auto type on their forums  and they say they will look into it, so I don't think it's  because of security. I get why you say that, keyloggers and all, but KeePass somehow gets around that. They Explain it in their documentation, I forget now what it was. As I said in my post, I do use it, it's a lot better to go to bitwarden.com on whatever PC you want to access your passwords than bring some program  with you, but on my primary  I will probably sinchronise it with KeePass and use that.

Re: Disability versus ability

Just because you can do many things a sighted person doesn't mean you don't have a disability, or blindness isn't a disability. Look at it this way, the tasks you perform aren't iquivalant to the sighted. We usually have to put in at least twice the efort and energy to accomplish many tasks. We are slower and less efficient on many of them, which puts you at a disadvantage, both in jobs, and life in general as you have less time available.

Re: Disability versus ability

I think whether or not blindness is a disability really depends on how you look at it. I mean, sure there are some things you simply cannot do if you are blind, but there are a great, many more that you still can. If one is willing to try at it, then yes a blind person could easily play a great, many mainstream games, though there are some that may not be possible. Yes, a blind person could easily start his?her own business and be very successful at it. I know that, legally speaking, blindness is considered a disability. However, for me personally, I don't look at it that way entirely. I see it as more of a major inconvenience at times rather than an outright disability, and that is because, other than some things we can't do, most of what folks do in life is very open for us as well. I have had many an interesting discussion with people about this topic in the past, and it's interesting to hear some of the various thoughts that some folks have on this.

Brython is pretty good. You will need to learn HTML, and the basics of _javascript_, but if you don't want to learn ES6 (latest version of _javascript_), then Brython can do a lot. It's also slightly easier to read than _javascript_.Another thing you can do, if you really want, is investigate the web assembly versions of python:https://stackoverflow.com/questions/447 … ebassemblybut if you're a newbie, then Brython is what you want.To learn _javascript_, do the tutorials at Free Code Camp:https://www.freecodecamp.org/

I think the first step would be to find a mainstream open-source game that is almost accessible mechanics-wise, and or that you're super passionate about, then you should learn the language the game is coded in, then you should learn how to use the engine the game is coded in. At that point, you can evaluate if it's worth the trouble. It's going to take a lot of work, major rebuilding of the game, and lots of time. But you can do it if you put your mind to it! We need more mainstream games to be made accessible.

To be fair, it's not technically inaccessible; it's just annoying and jarring when web developers throw that sort of thing at people with no warning, and annoying to use in general.

Re: Chosen, an erotic text rpg for those who miss corruption of champions.

Okay, amde it right to the final boss and got defeated due to huge lust damage impairing all my chracter's abilities. The arcana wizard powers seem very broken, since the only ones which seemed to work were charge and flame armour, since wizards and fighters seem the most common classes of characters you come across, this meant one party member was useless, and my party was basically just my archer, who went through volleying things to death, my very useless wizard who could barely do anything, and several fighters who basically grappled and hit things. it's annoying though that the last boss is so based around lust and will power, though it makes sense for an erotic rpg I suppose, still I do wonder if some of the mods that fix bugs might be worth checking to see if wizards are more useful. I also really wish there were more events and locations for each type, since the descriptions of the landscape was getting samy there. All in all rather interesting for what it is, and I'd like to see how some other classes work, though sadly not as good as Coc or Flexible survival it seems, or at least not in it's current state.

Re: DeadFright - A Survival Horror Audio Game (DEMO)

I finally got around to trying this today and it's really cool!I do wish you could use right shift for running as well though, and that map borders made a wall hit sound of some type.Being able to hear sleep walkers through a wall or door quietly might be nice too.  Two of them were on either side of the church door and I went inside to wait for them to hopefully lose interest, but I had to step out to check.  Not so bad, but I do think that hearing them through the door might have been cool and creepy.I find the clicks a bit annoying to be honest, and sometimes they seem to trigger for far away walls which I don't really want.  Maybe the click speed could be based on distance, and you could toggle the sound with a key?I also got confused by that door to the room with the record player, because it opened automatically instead of working like the other doors did.I love the sound design and the ability to turn during cutscenes by the way!  The number stations were a nice touch, though more creepy if you don't know what they are I'm sure.I personally would have liked to have everything explained in the tutorial rather than via messages in the first chapter, because they kept interrupting my gameplay and it wasn't always obvious what triggered them because unlike a tutorial map where things are presented one at a time, I was distracted by all sorts of other things.I also found it odd that I didn't find any sleep walkers in houses, though maybe that was just luck.  I think it might have been cool if the baby or it's mother attacked me when I got close for instance.Next month I'll definitely be donating to this, and if I can help in any other way, please let me know.

Re: Disability versus ability

2020-09-25 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Off-topic room : enes via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Disability versus ability

8, the comparasons you make are wrong and flawed in many ways. Firstly,  not being able to fly etc cannot be considered on the same grounds as having a disability.  Flying, never has  been, and probably never will be, a normal human ability possessed by anyone. Nieether is it necesary to perform any daily task normal people do. Sighted people needing help isn't the same as a disabled person needing help iether. We need help because a part of our body, that should have been functioning isn't, and we  are in a situation requiring use of that faculty. However,  a sighted relative needing help on a computer is a fundementally different situation. Most people don't know everything to an advanced level. Your relatives likely don't care about computers, or want to know anything about them beyond surfing the net or playing games. Similarly, some blind people might not care about music, or coding to devote the time for advanced knowledge. However, I can garantee, if an executive order was issued that said all companies must relieve employees who aren't power windows users within a year, everyone suddenly would be massively good at computers, and would be competing with each other. In essence, the sighted person chooses not to learn or know something, and can easily learn something if they want to. But the blind person has a fundemental defesit that is independant of efort, and cannot be corrected.Camlorn, I honestly thought I was the only one understanding the reality of blindness. What people like yourself and me are saying here isn't that people should jump off a cliff  or hang themselves because they realize they have many more limitations that are perminent. What I am saying is that people should simply accept these, not deny them, and move on. But  the reality undoubtidly is that blindness is a very severe disability. It probably easily is the one of the top 5 most severe disabilities anyone can have, when you analyze the daily impact, loss of sensory information etc. Also, blindness combined with another sensory disability or serious medical condition probably would rank in the top 3. Blindness basicly rewires the brain, making it much more dificult to understand spacial concepts etc, but also more importantly, 70% of the  information sighted people get comes through their eyes. I don't think anyone who is born blind truly understands the enormity of that.

Thanks for the report!@61  Alright, so there was a crash on a floor late in the game, so it's not just the first floor, it must be something else. @62 Really happy you got to play more of the game defender! thanks for putting in the effort! @63 Zakc It's a bug with the screenreader system I am using; If you bind the movement keys to the arrow keys, you get that issue. The reason is the UI is Hardcoded to use the arrow keys, and I have to untangle the code to make it work. It's the same reason the game doesn't have gamepad support yet; The game doesn't allow the controller to navigate the UI.Movement on WASD should not be a problem if you want to try that. But thanks for the feedback on the way the message buffer works! I could definitely remove messages from player actions (like scanning) from the buffer.Oh, and I'll just share some numbers here; The game has been downloaded 564 times, 560 on Windows4 on Mac (haha)The vast majority of the traffic coming from the AudioGames Forums. Hi.At dark well you could copy the name, incert it into your dictionary and type in a placeholder description till you know the persons real name or the one they would want to identify with.I know alot of chinese people around here who give out another name that is easier for the western tongues to pronounce. Because I know how to pronounce them, I always use their real names, but for some the more western sounding name is easier to remember and speak.Greetings Moritz.

@8O sorry, mixed you up with DJEPIC and thought I was talking to a (as far as I know) non-programmer.  Realistically you could run one of these yourself with one of the cloud machine learning offerings but it'd be pricey, more so than just paying Google.Mozilla's is also slower than realtime for the time being. Tacotron might not be, I suspect it is and Google has something proprietary that's not for Google Home.
