Re: Thoughts About Audiogames getting Nintendo Switch Ports

At 26, Was never one for judging people for their videogame prefferences, like you certainly seem to be. While I can't say I've heard of a Netendo, I can say that the Nintendo Switch costs $299, just like that big Amazon Echo you mentioned. Have you ever held a Switch? It's pretty tiny, and makes a lot of sense as either a secondary console, or a primary one. Regarding your accessibility comments, the Nintendo Switch is actually pretty accessible, minus a TTS feature of course. As far as "not giving a f*ck" about this, why put down those of us that want to push accessibility of videogames forward? Why simply settle for what we have now? Settling didn't get us TLOU2 on the PS4. Nor did it get us any of the other mainstream games with various levels of accessibility on various platforms.Getting back to the topic of the Nintendo Switch, consider this. Most audiogames, with the exception of the RPG's, are played in short bursts. In other words, perfect for a hybrid console like the Switch. RPG's have a great home on the platform as well.Next time, really consider where you stand vs the rest of the blind gaming community before you start bashing, and being afraid to try something new to you. For the record, I'm about to go install Steam to play a game I recently heard about, so hopefuly things go well on that front. To end off, you have a passion for the X-Box apparently, and I have one for the Switch, and I don't think I'm alone in that.

Re: Thoughts About Audiogames getting Nintendo Switch Ports

That's true. I would go so far as to say that TLOU 2's screen reader was better than Sony's though, so either way things worked out well. To be fair though, the Switch and PS4/5 are completely different Architectures, so it might not even be possible for game devs to build a screen reader into Switch games.

Re: Thoughts About Audiogames getting Nintendo Switch Ports

Wow. This is actually generating discussion. I like that. To get back to the Switch though, TLOU 2 demonstrated that a console doesn't necessarily have to have built-in TTS, as that game uses its own TTS from what I can tell. While it's true that Nintendo hasn't exactly had Sony or Microsoft levels of accessibility, the potential is there. The Switch, in particular, has some "accidental accessibility" features, like navigational cues on the home screen, different sounds to indicate which icon you've selected, "Settings, Controler Config, Eshop, etc. I think we're seeing the beginnings of accessible mainstream gaming on the platform, but the idea of playing an audiogame like Paladin of the Sky, Manamon, Super Liam, etc, seems perfect for the Switch. Not to mention, dev kits cost only $400 or so from what I've been able to research, and Nintendo has been extremely indie friendly as of late. So much so, that they have presentations specifically for indies.I'M curious to see how far you guys go with these ideas you've been discussing about the NES as well. I'd love to contribute more than just discussion and ideas, but I don't know an ounce of code, and I wouldn't know which language to begin with.

Thoughts About Audiogames getting Nintendo Switch Ports

Hi guys. Long time no post. Something that caught my attention last week, was the release of Alt-Frequencies on the Nintendo Switch. It's very much playable, but since the Switch has no built-in TTS, the menus don't read, which is the only drawback. That got me thinking though, about the possibilities of ways to play audiogames on the Switch. Games like Control, and Hitman 3, received cloud versions on the platform, which is an approach that's actually working pretty well from what I've heard so far. As for how audiogames would work, I can't say, because I don't know how much latency there might be, but it sounded like a great idea in my head.Who knows though. Maybe I'll be browsing the EShop for deals, and stumble across another audiogame. A guy can dream, right?

Some of the things that are inaccessible to the built-in screen reader include, but are not limited to, most of the settings options, (time/date, profile management, etc,) anything in the share menu, browsing the store on the console itself, the entire initial setup process, system updates, and more. Even the screen reader itself is limited. The only things you can control are the speed and volume of the voice.

Regarding the lagging sound, that should be happening so as not to drown out the speech. The only problem I could see is the app not opening on the first try. If that happens, press VO+Shift+M on the manamon app, then select open. A dialog box should appear. Just press the "open" or "Open anyway" button, and you should be good to go.

Re: Any Arcade game collectors out there?

Oh, and I forgot that they don't necessarily need to be huge. For instance, I'm considering purchasing a build-it-yourself, bartop cabinet to house my Neo Geo or CPS2 arcade hardware. Problem is, I would need to buy a monitor, and buttons/joysticks for the controls, but the benefit is that it is much smaller than a full-size cab. The one I'm looking into measures about 20 inches wide, 19 inches deep, and about 25 inches high. Those dimensions are estimates, but they give you an idea to work with.

As of right now, the cabs are "stored" at my mom's garage, which is huge... until I move into my own place, and hopefully get a garage or basement of my own. Regarding the price, cabs can be fairly cheap if you are patient, and know where to look. I got mine all from Craigslist, but you can find some good deals on Ebay, the KLOV forums, and others as well.I'll try to get a good recording of my Daytona setup in action next time I go to my mom's place.to answer the question of what an arcade cabinet is, it is a cabinet that houses all the parts necessary for an coin operated video game. They contain the game boards themselves, as well as the controls, monitor, coin mechanisms, power supply, etc to make the game work. They also contain graphics on the sides of the cab and sometimes the bezel around the screen.

Hi guys.Just wanted to see if there are any fell blind folks interested in collecting arcade games. I currently have a twin-and-a-half Daytona USA setup, a Galaga cabinet, and am interested in getting a Neo Geo MVS and Capcom CPS2.I've enjoyed going to arcades ever since I was young, and I always thought it would be neat to have an actual arcade cabinet in my house. Working on them has been fun as well. One of my Daytona USA cabinets had a bad sound board, and another has what I suspect is a bad sound amplifier. Actually being able to swap some boards around and getting 2 fully functional cabinets without sight was really cool. Also, navigating the test menu was slightly difficult, but TapTapSee and Be My Eyes came to the rescue.

Hi,Glad to see a fellow blind person showing the 3DS some love. As for usability, sighted assistance is needed to set the system up and download EShop purchases, but the main menu has diferent sounds for the menu options, and the games have little intro clips, similar to the PSP. Oh yeah, Super Smash Bros is great. You would be fine with the 2DS, but sighted assistance will be needed to change the sound to stereo, as it only has a single speaker and defaults to mono when plugging in headphones. I personally have a 3DS XL, which has longer battery life, but see if you can experiment with both systems to see which one suits you better.

Re: Petition to Nintendo to include access to the 3DS system

Hi,At post 18, I hope Im misunderstanding your post, because it seems a little doom and gloom to me. I do appreciate your input as to what is (in your opinion), the right way to approach this though. I do agree that Nintendo was doing fine without us, but so were Amazon, Google, Apple, Etc.Lets think of it this way. Before Apple introduced VoiceOver on iOS, blind people wouldnt touch an iPhone with a 10 foot pole. How many blind people do you know that have iPhones today though? The device is different, but Im sure you understand my point. As for this being a mainstream company who wouldnt even give us a glance, I dont remember the name of the dev company, but there was a fighting game that recently incorporated sounds to make the game more playable by the blind, and they were mainstream. That is one out of a ton, but the possibility is still there.Ill end this post with 2 questions.1. Please, answer thi
s honestly. Am I wasting my time and energy with this goal?2. If the 3DS was made accessible, would you purchase one? Thanks,JamesURL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=175057#p175057

Re: Petition to Nintendo to include access to the 3DS system

Hi,Thanks for backing me with this. Youre probably right about my flawed logic, but I do think people would buy it if they know that it is accessible. Look at the Mac. Once blind people found out about VO, and just how usable a Mac is, sales jumped significantly. I dont have the exact figures, but I can guarantee Apple noticed. Of course, that applies to IOS devices as well.Ill admit, maybe I am slightly insane about this whole thing, but as a soon-to-be father, I would really love to bond with my kid while playing games we could both enjoy.I love audio games, and I mean no offense when I say this, but they just dont cut it in terms of being something my child and I could enjoy together. Its time mainstream companies take notice of us.I do apologize for these long posts, but I really do feel passionate about this, and think it needs to change. I had an OM instructor who would always tell me, the squeaky wheel gets th
e grease. That just stuck with me to this day. Thanks,JamesURL: http://audiogamesforum.captivatingsound.com/viewtopic.php?pid=175001#p175001

Re: Petition to Nintendo to include access to the 3DS system

Hi,SLJ, thanks man. I tried to be as descriptive as I could without going overboard. As for your questions, I wanted to address that issue. I see it this way. If you make the console accessible, then accessible games should follow. As for reaching out to Nintendo, Ive been trying to locate both Satoru Iwatas and Reggie Fils-Aimes contact info, but havent been successful yet.For Mario Navarro and everyone else who may have had a problem with the link, here it is again.http://www.change.org/petitions/nintend … on_createdThat should work this time. Please dont hesitate to share the link on your Facebook, twitter, and any other social network profiles you can.Im on a mission to see this through, but Ill need all the help I can get. Thanks all, and Im happy to see a discussion taking place about this. Its a long time overdue, but now that the technology is capable of handling it, its time to take action.Have a good day,JamesURL: http://audiogamesforum.captivatingsound.com/viewtopic.php?pid=174959#p174959

Re: Petition to Nintendo to include access to the 3DS system

Hello,Thats exactly right. If I remember correctly, isnt the Xbox one running what is essentially Windows 8?Thats why Im hoping the people who arent interested in Nintendo products will sign it, as if Nintendo does make the 3DS accessible, I dont think it would be too long before Sony and Microsoft both jump on board. Think, the smartphone race. Apple came first, and while Google is still getting there, Android is still quite usable.Back on the topic at hand though, I really see this as a win-win situation. Thanks for signing,JamesURL: http://audiogamesforum.captivatingsound.com/viewtopic.php?pid=174906#p174906

Re: Petition to Nintendo to include access to the 3DS system

Hi,You would be correct. I believe the only way to approach something like this is to have the attitude that it would work. As Ive said before, the disabled population is a hugely untapped market, full of potential. Its a shame that it is going to take as much effort as it is, but Im willing to do it.Call me crazy, but I think we can make this happen. Thanks,JamesURL: http://audiogamesforum.captivatingsound.com/viewtopic.php?pid=174923#p174923

Petition to Nintendo to include access to the 3DS system

2014-05-20 Thread AudioGames . net ForumGeneral Game Discussion : James via Audiogames-reflector

Petition to Nintendo to include access to the 3DS system

Hi all,Nintendo products have always been on the opposite end of the accessibility spectrum. However, it is my personal mission to see that this is no longer the case.Ive created a petition to reach out to Nintendo, and encourage them to incorporate accessibility into the 3DS system software. If you think about it, it just makes cents, (though I like to think it makes dollars, but that doesnt sound as cool.) Apple, Google, and even Microsoft all have devices that blind people can use exactly on the same level as out sighted counterparts. Even Amazons devices are now usable by us. These are different markets, but looking past that, there is no excuse for gaming companies not to include accessibility features in their consoles. Why am I specifically targeting the 3DS? There are a few reasons. First of all, the 3ds is selling quite a lot better that the WIIU. Second, it has the top-selling Pokemon franchise. However, the games are not the target as of yet. I am taking this from the approach of make the console accessible, then the games will come later.I understand that there may be a lot of you who arent interested in Nintendo products, but I will encourage you not to brush this petition off, as according to some other blind folks Ive discussed this with, the big N is the most uninterested in making their consoles accessible, which is completely contradictory to their fun for everyone mantra.I would like to ask ;you to please sign this petition, then share it with all your friends via any means you have. Lets band together, and let Nintendo know that we deserve to play just as everyone else does. The link to the petition is:http://www.change.org/petitions/nintend … u-softwareThank you guys very much,JamesURL: http://audiogamesforum.captivatingsound.com/viewtopic.php?pid=174892#p174892
