Steam and Star Wars KOTR

Hello, I've never played on steam or even have it downloaded. I've heard Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic is accessible though, and I'd love to play this. Can anyone tell me how to set up steam, and what I'll need to play this game in particular?

I'm in the third level of stage one and when I open doors it keeps popping up a box that just says my character name in it. It use to say what room it was or something. Because of this I can't figure out how to beat the level

Out of curiousity, how much pk is there if you join say the assassins guild? I really enjoy rp, but also love good pk and that sounds neat.

I always try this game and get really confused, even though it seems pretty awesome. I manage to kill some rats maybe but thats about it, then I just sort of wander. Cant get a race and guild and the like.
