Re: I'd like to do walkthroughs, but I struggle too much with presentation Here's my tip. You say when you're relaxed, you can find where you need to be at. You also say you'd be fine with a lot more stuff being unscripted if you're doing a let's play. So do that and be you.I think scripting really gets in people's way. IMO you see this with people all the time who do stuff like this, they feel they need to be something, you know like a kind of character. Some people can really pull that off, and other people can't.I also think though that you just need to try stuff. Maybe that's just busting out with videos or audio or whatever, maybe that's beta testing it among people you trust, either because you know them or they're people who you feel are giving good feedback. I look at it like learning a song. You start, and you play three notes, then you get it wrong. You do that again. People get frustrated and that's understandable. But that's just how learning songs works, you fail a bunch of times. Or if you don't like failing, let's say it's a simple enough song that you have it in your head, maybe you're trying to add an ornament to it, and that comes out wrong. The only way to stop doing that is to do the song a bunch more. Put another way and more simply, suppose you want to be a potter and you want to make pots. The way to get good at making pots is to make a whole lot of not good pots. Just do it. Yeah, try and learn, read stuff or watch videos or whatever. But at some point, you gotta make pots. And those pots will not be great. But that's OK, because you're teaching yourself to do a whole new thing.I say if you're the kind of person who makes super crazy detailed game walkthroughs, good. Make those. You do you. I'm not saying you don't take feedback or anything. But I'm saying that if you have somebody like Cheese Wheel up there who just wants short and simple? They're probably not the audience for your stuff, and you shouldn't try to change who you are to please them. Not that GCW was at all saying you should, I'm just using that as an example ready to hand. If super detailed actually helps you, if it's what you want and wished more people did? Do it. Maybe I'm just weird though. I do music, with weird instruments. Every time somebody tells me they like it, usually opening with "oh my grandfather played one of those!", I'm always a little baffled, because I'm just playing what I like you know? It's cool that people like it, and I mean in a way I want them to, but I'm not doing surveys or anything and going "what do the people want to hear"! I'm just doing what I do and following my own interests. Re: Minecraft as a totally blind player. Cool stuff. Here are some thoughts: We already have verticals and gap detection with a lot of the platformers, e.g. 2D Platform (which I really wish would come back because it was honestly pretty fun), BK3, stuff like that. Inventory section stuff should be fairly doable. Similarly, continuous textures, I don't see what the big deal is. If block A and block B essentially fuse, you just have block C is a wider and/or taller block. Flying honestly seems like the toughest thing so far. That might be some sort of new interface, e.g. finding where you want to go with a camera/map explorer mode, and teleporting to it, if it's reachable.I mean, I'm not saying this solves every problem, or that it's necessarily something that you can do with mods alone. I'm just saying, I don't see a conceptual problem with any of these things, like vertical position and gap detection and things like that. Mouse usage could be a problem, as well as a fully 3D map, I could see that being confusing, I don't tend to like them much. Also, I admit that if you did a lot of this with a camera/map explorer sort of mode, you know so you can, say, work out where wheat is and then walk through it, that might not be a hell of a lot of fun for people. But again, conceptually speaking, I really feel like all of the stuff mentioned is mostly solved in various audio games that we already have. Again, maybe you can't implement all of this purely via mods, and it really would require the company rewriting or adding significant amounts of code. Then, as a practical matter, yeah, it's probably not happening. But just in terms of what you'd need to do to make the stuff that's been laid out accessible? I feel like we've already got the toolkit to hand, as it were. So say you're building a fence. I assume you put a post on an available block, and then put a post next to it, and so on. Either that or, since you mentioned stretching them, put a post at X and a post at Y, i.e. the two ends of your fence, and then pick one post and do the stretching action. OK,so you just make sure you can walk the fence's path, drop a post where you start, go to the end, dropping posts if necessary, drop a post, and either you're done if you've dropped posts, or you activate the stretch, which sure might need some sort of special interface to do.Same thing with building. If you get to a cliff, you get to whatever vertical position however you get there, start laying blocks or digging them out, whatever you do. Start building. You should be able to move around on the cliff, and if you can't, that means you've got an impassable block. Similarly, should be simple enough to inspect your walls for gaps by essentially walking along them. None of that seems particularly difficult. Re: Minecraft as a totally blind player. Sure. Look, I'm all about probability, although you seem to be assuming that the only way this can happen is due to the companies putting it out doing the work. This isn't always the case, e.g. some other company gave more speech feedback in their NKS instruments, there's now code to give more plugin editing feedback in OSARA, stuff like that. I'd personally love to get in touch with somebody from Native, though I'd ideally have a bunch more programming under my belt first, because it seems to me there's no good reason that we can't make our own NKS mappings. Right now it's all very graphical as I understand it, but that stuff's just getting stored in files somewhere. If I can click or drag a graphical thingy to do that, I don't see why I couldn't just set that information in a file and be done with it.But like I keep saying, it is entirely possible that you can do all the mods you want, and MC will never be accessible. But let's give reasons for that, you know just like you demand the people who think it will be totes accessible should explain how that will work. And "you'd have to rewrite the codebase from the ground up" isn't really a reason, it's just an assertion with no evidence whatsoever. I think it also ignores potential progress, e.g. there is, as I understand it, a creative mode where you don't have to worry about survival and such, and you can just build things.Could that be made accessible? No idea. But assume it's possible. There are, again as I understand it, whole communities that do that, just build things and don't worry about the whole RPG monster fighting side of it. So sure, that's not the whole game. But it's something. And if you can get that working, well, I don't see why you couldn't build on that. Re: Minecraft as a totally blind player. I hate to be this dude. But some of us think they're smarter than the rest of us, and that irritates me.So JayJay wants "a response". Except now the inaccessibility argument is based on a lack of understanding of Minecraft. Whether you believe this is so because we lack exposure to the code, or because the only way to understand MC is to play and experience it, which we can't do because it's visual, doesn't really matter. Your argument claims we can't possibly explain how MC might be made accessible, because we can't understand it because reasons.OK, great. But that means you're equally in the dark. If we can't make any statements about potential accessibility due to our lack of understanding, then we also can't make any statements about it's potential inaccessibility either. That same lack of understanding applies to you too.I'm sorry that your own dumb argument defeats itself. But it does. Let us say, for the sake of argument, that you're completely correct, and Minecraft will never be made accessible, because it is literally impossible to make it accessible. That's great. You're still wrong because you have no grounds whatsoever to make that claim. Because remember, none of us who are blind can ever really understand the game, which is precisely what we need to do in order to tell you how it might be made accessible. OK, but then you don't understand it either. So you have no grounds to claim that due to X Y and Z about the game or its code, it can never be made accessible, because you just got done telling us that none of us can possibly understand it.So which is it? Can we understand it such that we should be able to make an ultimate determination concerning accessibility or lack thereof? Or can none of us really understand it, in which case, none of us can do that, according to your own argument? Pick one kids, you can't have both. This is what we call logic. You might want to try it some time or other, or maybe back off on the weird overblown knowledge claims you're making, huh? Re: Minecraft as a totally blind player. I was more thinking of the whole thing about whomever not knowing what this dream blind people have about playing Minecraft is all about, since it will never happen.I barely know anything about Minecraft, like it's lucky I know it exists. I know it's super popular and one of my nephews plays it. So I initially thought about that, hey if it works it might be cool to show him how I play it. Then I saw this dude's video and I was like, oh yeah they're doing some accessibility stuff, and I vaguely remember seeing somebody raving about a mod a while back. So I wondered what that was all about and what kind of progress was being made. It's entirely possible that Minecraft would bore me to tears. But if it actually gets playable, I'd probably support it. A lot of the more mainstream games seem to be what I'd call partially playable, e.g. a lot of the fighting games people seem to love, or only available on consoles, or even a single console, e.g. "The Last of us II". While I'd love supporting something like that, I'm not buying a game console for a single accessible game, you know? But damn, all y'all act like I'm up nights wringing my hands complete with weeping and gnashing of teeth because this one damn game isn't accessible to me. I'm like, just kind of curious you know? It's like if somebody told me there was an attempt to crossbreed apes and locusts. That would be ridiculous, but I gotta admit, I'd want to check in on that shit every once in a while to see what the hell's up with it, you know what I'm sayin'? Minecraft as a totally blind player. So Microsoft posted this video to Twitter today.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7x0ZOB5 … e=youtu.beHe seems to have some limited useful vision, and he implies that it helps him in the game. I'm running a PC with an XBox controller, a classic if that matters, and I also have Steam if it's needed. I'm running Win 10 with the latest NVDA.So like the subject says, can we play it? I know there was talk of a module or such that really helped out but it seemed to be in beta. I guess I'm asking the usual stuff.1. If we can play it, what do we need to get set up? Is there a particular version of the game we need, some particular server to connect to, that kind of thing?2. Any demos on Youtube or such on how to play as a totally blind player? You know, you've been curious about Minecraft, here's how it works?I don't know much about the game but I know you can do some single player stuff and some group stuff, which seemed to be happening in the video. I'd probably want to start with single player first, though I don't have any problem with joining a group or whatever. But I assume that would just be more stuff to set up. I'm fairly technically-minded so I shouldn't need a ton of hand holding, just some decent pointers if they exist. I know they keep doing accessibility updates, but last I saw it didn't look like you could really play it if you were totally blind. But I'm probably wrong about that. Re: Is there a list of games that work with an X-Box controller? A couple of things, in case anybody's interested.1. I was hitting the wrong button for the first tutorial in Sequence Storm. I was hitting the left trigger instead of the left shoulder button. I got through the second tutorial mission, so we'll see how the next one goes. Also, if you set up the vibrations, it vibrates in time with the song, at least it did with the second mission. So you can figure out rhythm starts, hold, stuff like that, by counting how many vibrations each part of the sequence takes.2. Ninja Storm whatever. Yeah, probably not for me. I checked out somebody playing it on Youtube, and it's just a bunch of incomprehensible fighting noises. Like I said, I might get into these more mainstream games at some point, but my big problem is that I've never found anybody explaining one. So I don't think I'd have any idea what was going on, if I installed one and tried to play it.That having been said, if there's a game that has something like menu narration, and you can figure out the story and/or audio and play it, I'd love to hear about it, with a bit of an explanation. Re: Is there a list of games that work with an X-Box controller? OK, let me be a bit more specific. I'm looking for accessibility that's a lot closer to Slay The Spire than I am for "OK if you memorize all of the menus and have just the right OCR addon and go learn the exact sequence of moves each enemy does, you can play this game". That's particularly true if, as I assume every one of them will be, it's a game I have to pay for.I say this because, while I might go down that road at some point, I want to get into a game's world, not pause every twelve seconds to go and OCR things or whatever. So I mean, it doesn't have to be an audio game, Slay isn't. It just has to be a fairly smoothly working experience. So if people could expand on the games already mentioned, I'd appreciate it. I'm running a PC with Steam, if that matters. I'm interested in accessible games, obviously, by which I mean games that are fairly straightforward to play out of the box. Put another way, I want games that work, not something like Minecraft that has some accessibility and you can maybe play it if you squint real hard.I guess my point is, I see people playing mainstream games on Youtube and such, and they say they're playable, but I have no idea how they're doing that. So I'd either need a crash course on that, if we've got one somewhere, or way more accessible games. Anyway, here's a special map thing that shows up on the daily climb, the strategic thing I talked about at the end of the last video in action, and moving to your player to see stats and such while on the map. I'll try to figure out how to stick these into a playlist so they're all collected in one place. Hope they're helpful for some of the people who wanted demos of Say The Spire. Everybody wanted a Say The Spire demo. I was going to get hammered and fight an alpaca tonight, because sometimes, a man's just gotta get drunk and fight animals from the depths of South America.Instead, I figured I'd be useful to the community and stuff and make that Say The Spire demo everybody's been asking for. Well, OK, you probably didn't want *this* demo specifically, but tough,it's what you're getting!I have a classic X-Box 1 controller, I think. So if you have or are getting a PS4 controller, or a more modern X-Box controller, you might have to figure out your own button layout. But they should be somewhat similar. I tried to talk about button layout on the controller, rather than the button labels, though I did use some of those too.People wanted a demo so they didn't have to figure out what all of the controls do. So I tried to tackle what all of the controls do. I'm not saying I've done the greatest job possible, but it's better than "there is no demo, figure it out for yourself". If there's something I didn't cover, you're probably on your own, because I probably don't know it. Ask anyway though, just in case I do and missed something I should have demoed. Re: slay the spire now accessible! man, Slay The Spire is fun, but setting it up makes me feel pretty dumb.So here's a question. When I run Text The Spire and everything loads, I get choices. People say to enter start charname in the prompt, but that does nothing for me. So I type play. I type standard. Then I type, let's say thesilent. That's selected. Now what do I do? how do I actually start the game? The sad thing is that it started once. But I have no idea what in the world I did to make that happen. My last game got started when I was messing with my controller in Say The Spire that doesn't work, I need to buy an X-Box controller for that I guess. But since I managed to start a game, because some of the controller works, when I ran Text The Spire, I could just continue. I ran The Silent and got up to, I think, the ninth floor of the first act, farthest so far. Really fun game, and thanks for the mod Wensber! I'll probably pick up a controller, but I'm going to learn both Say and Text The Spire. Gives me multiple ways to play and I don't have to depend on dragging a controller everywhere. Re: Setting up Slay The Spire accessibility. OK! The battle has been won!No, not in the game, I died. I got Text The Spire to let me play cards. For some reason, play 1 0 doesn't work, but 1 0 does work.So a couple of questions, in case anybody's paying attention. I slogged through the "Slay The Spire is accessible" thread and haven't really found anything after at least ten pages.1. Could somebody explain map and path in Text? I've just been typing proceed when I win, and it's taking me to another floor. I don't see a way to pick a path or anything. For instance, at the beginning say I get choices 1 2 and 3. I pick choice 2. Then I kill however many monsters are there. I just get proceed after picking my gold and card and anything else that shows up, and then I go to another floor. So I'm not sure what else I'm supposed to be doing.2. Now that it's working, I'm going to snag an X-Box controller. Is there a video or recording of how to play with one? Liam uses one but he doesn't explain things, which is cool. But I mean, I don't know how to pick a card, or a room you can go to, or what have you. But whatever Liam was doing for mapping and such seems simpler, as long as I can figure out how it works. So far Slay The Spire is pretty fun, but it makes me feel really dumb anyway. I find out it's some sort of bug with controllers. My controller's unplugged but I thought maybe having Say enabled was a problem. So I disabled it.So I tell it to start. I get to the character selection screen. I can select ironclad or thesilent. If I type one of those in, I get no new choices. So I have no idea how to continue, since neither start nor continue do anything. I also have a feeling I still won't be able to play any cards. If anybody has any ideas, I'd love to hear them. This would be a cool game, if I could actually get it to work.At this point, I wonder if I have to get rid of everything and reinstall from scratch. I'm also kind of wondering about Say. Apparently suddenly not being able to play any cards is some sort of issue when using a controller, and the only thing you can do to fix it, that I've seen, is save and quit and run the game again. That's why I thought maybe disabling Say would do something, if it made the game think there was a controller present. But apparently not. I sure hope somebody has an idea so I can play this thing, with a controller or without. It sounds amazing and I doubt Steam gives refunds, not that I want one, I want to play this cool game damn it! I'm using some sort of Logitech rumble pad. The buttons in the diamond, 1-4 or what would be X Y A and B on an X-Box controller I think, seem to be working. The directional pad seems to be working. However, both joysticks do nothing whatsoever, so far as I can tell, and I'm not sure about the left and right trigger buttons either.Any tips on figuring out what's going on? I could just spend some more money and buy an X-Box controller I guess. But if I don't have to, I'd rather not. Plus I don't see why parts of the controller should work, but not others. That makes me wary of just throwing up my hands and dropping money on another controller.I'll probably end up installing Text just so I don't have to have a controller with me to play, in case I'm out somewhere or put it away somewhere and don't feel like getting it or whatever. But being able to play with a controller sounds pretty cool. I did manage to pick the only map choice and start fighting something. I moved through cards but I don't think I actually picked anything, so my turns did nothing.I did manage to move around to things, using the directional pad. The monster, a jaw worm I think, had its HP and aggression and all read, but for me it just said "ironclad". I assume I'd use the right stick at that point to move up and down through my stats, but since the sticks aren't working, well ...Anyway, thanks for the help so far. I checked out Liam playing it last night which is what made me decide to get it, looks like a pretty cool game, and I know the basics work, so I didn't waste my money. Bought Slay The Spire. Random question, do you get music, or do you have to buy the sound track for that? I assume you have to buy it, but I figured I'd ask before just spending money I might not have to.2. A window popped up telling me it was installing Slay. According to the article on using Steam I was supposed to be able to see things in this, but none of NVDA's review modes gave me a thing, yes I added the -no-dwrite switch. I hit enter just in case and waited for a bit. i switched to Steam and as far as I can tell it thinks I have the game, when I clicked on it I got a play button/link.3. Went into the workshop and subscribed to Say The Spire, Mod The Spire, and Base Mod.4. Closed Steam, just because. Ran mts_steam.cmd. Like I said, I got a thing that popped up saying "window", that went away, and nothing happened.I'll have my wife take a look at it at some point, though I don't know if she'll see anything, that windows went by pretty quick. Everything should be in the default locations. Do I need to run the game first and enable mods? I wasn't really clear how to do that, I get how to move around in Mod The Spire, but not how to get it to come up in the first place. I'm sure I'm just missing something basic. Setting up Slay The Spire accessibility. Hi all.I'm looking into Slay The Spire. I was originally considering "Text the Spire", I think it is, but then saw "Say the Spire" that uses a game controller. That one seems simpler, but I've got a couple potential issues.First, I have some sort of Logitech controller. I don't have things like top panel square or whatever, I have a bunch of numbered buttons. So while I assume it will work, I'm not sure, and I'm not sure how the buttons would map, or if there's an easy way to find out what that mapping is, even if they do. Second, it seems like Say has far fewer features than Text. I understand that Say is a beta so I'm not trying to throw stones or anything. It sounds pretty cool and like I said, it sounds simpler to use.So I guess I have some questions.1. I see both Say and Text use the same two modules, base and I forget the other one. Can I just install both modules, or rather, Say and Text and the extra modules it needs? I see in Say's readme, it tells you to make sure to install the right version of base, so I guess what I'm asking is if they use the same versions of these modules.2. Assuming I can, is there a fairly simple way to switch between them? I know you can enable and disable modules, but just switching between a set would be nice, so loading either Say or Text and the extra modules it uses all at once.3. As I understand setup, I install the Java Runtime, gods I loathe the JRE, does the version matter? Or do I just go get the latest? Then I install Steam and buy the game.4. Then I see things about "Steam workshop". Say uses it, does Text as well? Do you just find that on the main Steam page/app? I'm honestly not quite sure how Steam works, I think I messed with it once ages ago but I might be wrong. Basically though, I'm wondering if they're both in there, because it seems like it would make for a much easier setup.5. Assuming I use Text, aside from the module made by a member whose names escape me, that reads windows automatically, I saw mention of a map module somewhere?6. I don't suppose Text also has controller support?7. I guess I may as well ask this too, which one would you recommend, and why? I feel like Text seems to be pretty full-featured, but I feel like people are really digging Say. A couple more BK3 questions. Hi all. So I'm stuck, again. I've gotten to 24:3. In the BK3 guide I read: "Each box once destroyed leaves behind a dial that can be set from 0 to 9. The number on the paper is from top to bottom. So drop down the gap, if you jump and keep moving you'll explode, so don't try that."I assume this is the gap at 2 right where you show up, because if I jump it and keep going, eventually I do explode. But if I step off and just drop down, I die every time I hit the ground. What am I missing? Also, how do you get to the bonus shops, do I have to finish the game first, or do they show up when you beat 24:3? I see from the guide, and Liam mentions it in his playthroughs, that the spirit sword is really good if you crank its level up. But it's only available in one of the bonus shops. I thought they'd show up when I beat 23, but no dice. I see from various places that you must get new options when you've beaten the game for the first time. Thanks in advance for any help. Re: Significant accessibility improvement in DCSS Dungeon Crawl Stone soup Hi. Started playing this more seriously, and I have a few questions.I think I've got finding items down, but just to check. 1. When it says you see an item, hit ctrl-x. 2. Pick the item letter, and hit enter, or possibly exclamation, I haven't quite figured out which, to travel to it. Then you can hit 'g' to get it.I figured I'd see if I'm missing an easier way. But a bigger question is this. I've run into two problems that break auto-explore, by design but I'm not sure how to get out of it. 1. A travel excluded zone. I know what these are, clouds of flame and such, but I'm not sure how to get out of one normally. I did have a demigod char who found a ring of flight and that let me get out of one near an altar that had a cloud of flame, but I don't know how I'd get around it without that. 2. Sometimes, monsters are nearby, but unreachable. I can't attack them, and I can't auto-explore away to a point where they are reachable.Speaking of ctrl-x, the monster coordinates are nice, but how do you figure out where you are? I assume the idea is you get your coordinates, then the monster's, and go "oh they're to the right", so you can move to the right and attack them, or move closer until they're in range, if you're not close enough to them.To be fair, all of these except the travel excluded areas applied to BrogeSpeak, the only other roguelike I've played, besides the awesomeness that is Entombed of course. I never figured this stuff out there either, but this one seems, weirdly, a touch more accessible than BrogueSpeak. I guess I can just keep killing the monsters it generates and see if something new happens, but I'm guessing that's not the trick. Basically I know more about music from around the world, and mythology, and stuff like that than is probably good for one human being. I'm PA Dutch, don't worry nobody outside of Pennsylvania understands that, which means I occasionally say things like URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=322125#p322125 ___ Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector
