Re: Any smokers in here?

@Jayde, thank you for your apology. I appreciate it, and I will extend one of my own. I'm sorry for making ridiculous comparisons. You're absolutely right. The more I think about it, the harder it is to find a good comparison that actually works. it's tempting to delve into comparing smoking with other dangerous activities, such as drinking irresponsibly, driving a vehicle, or voting Republican. Sorry, I couldn't help that last one. No offense, all in fun. Anyway, it's also hard to find good comparisons between asking for help with smoking and being bashed for it, and asking for help with something else with the same result. here's one that sort of works, and I am seriously busting myself for this one. A blind friend tweeted about safe ways to wear masks and gloves and practice social distancing so she could go out to eat and hang out with her friends. My completely unhelpful response: Stay the fuck at home! Not at all useful. In retrospect, I should have seconded her question, as I have stayed the fuck home since last January and am unfamiliar with safe methods of wearing masks and nonvisual social distancing. as things worked out, I apologize for being a jerk and my friend got some good information. I hope the OP of this thread found the informative posts helpful and was able to ignore the rest of the flotsam and jetsam.

I've had a few auto correct mishaps crap up over the years, but here is my personal favorite. As with many of these, it is slightly offensive. Maybe more than slightly so don't read it if you're easily triggered.I read a tweet from a blind person who was talking about his new Vape pen and how much he preferred vaping over smoking cigarettes. I dictated the following:Can you give me more information? I'm curious how a blind person gets into vaping.Dictation result:Can you give me more information? I'm curious how a blind person gets into raping.Epic fail! Proofreading for the win!BTW, I dictated this post, so crap up should have been crop up. I left it in for a laugh.

Re: Any smokers in here?

@Jayde. You simultaneously got my point and missed it entirely. You said my logic doesn't hold. If you reread my post, you may notice that I said my comparisons were not good ones. Perhaps I didn't state that strongly enough. My comparisons were completely shitty and illogical. Of course, there are no such things as secondhand deep fried turkey or secondhand skydiving., and I won't kill anyone else if I choose to indulge in these unhealthy pastimes. I was trying to point out the sheer illogical insanity of screaming "Quit, quit, quit!" At a smoker who isn't asking for help with quitting. BTW, I'm not accusing you, Jayde, of said screaming, so please don't take it as such. Your reactions, though typical of a nonsmoker, are tempered with your usual calm and compassionate attitude. So I was surprised to read your reaction to my post. I thought I was being clear, that suggesting, or demanding, that a smoker quit smoking before a smoker is ready to take that step is unreasonable, and yes, illogical. Perhaps I should have abased myself a little more, but I thought this thread contained more than enough shaming and flaming. Again, not from you, but thick and fast from the nonsmokers and former smokers. I knew when I first saw the title of this thread that we smokers were going to come under attack. I'd just like to set the record straight. My crappy comparisons were crappy and illogical on purpose. Now that I've said my piece, it's time to freeze my ass off and smoke a cigarette. The only place I smoke in the world, especially with quarantine, is my patio. If I'm hurting anyone but myself by doing this, I don't know who or how. My two housemates also smoke, so no harm done there.Best to all of you, and smoke 'em if you got 'em!

Re: Any smokers in here?

Your friendly neighborhood flaming liberal smoker back with a question or two. First, what's up with blaming all the anti-smoking sentiments on liberals? I have been hounded by just as many hard-core Trump fans for smoking as I have been by hard-core Obama fans. Smoking is not political. It's just a stupid habit some of us enjoy. Second question. WTF? Why, when someone asks for help with something, does everyone find it necessary to come out of the woodwork and scream about how they shouldn't do it The OP did not ask for help quitting smoking. The OP asked for help smoking. If someone asked for help quitting, I would understand all of this trash talk. But so far in this thread, no one has asked for help quitting. All the smokers here end up feeling attacked. What? If someone asks how to deep fry a turkey, do you scream at them about how deep frying is unhealthy and they should only eat vegetables? If someone wants to know the best way for a blind person to enjoy skydiving, do you trot out all the horrible statistics about how people have gotten injured or died skydiving? What part of mind your own damn business do you people not understand?  yes, I know, there's no such thing as secondhand deep frying or secondhand skydiving, so that's not a really good comparison, but the general truth holds. If you used to smoke, and quit, and someone asks you for help quitting, by all means, spout off! If you've never smoked and can't stand it, why the hell are you even posting here? Oh, right, you don't want anyone in the world to smoke. Got it. And just in case anyone didn't get it the first time, this has nothing to do with liberal or conservative sentiments. It's just people throwing their weight around where it's not welcome.

Re: a sad vision loss

2020-10-27 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : Skhye via Audiogames-reflector

Re: a sad vision loss

@1, I, too, can relate. I was born with just enough vision to see light, motion and some colors. It has gradually disappeared over time. I only see light occasionally now, and then only when it's very bright. The rest of the time, I know this sounds weird, but my brain manufactures imaginary light. This can be pretty disturbing, but as long as I know it's just my brain trying to make order out of chaos, I can deal with it. While it's best to gradually and eventually accept your loss of vision, you may find that your light perception returns from time to time. I had a very strange experience the first time I lost all light perception. It was a Sunday and I woke up late and then wondered why I couldn't see any light through the window. It stayed completely lightless all day long. I went to bed wondering if I could ever see light again, even the very bright bathroom light or the one in the refrigerator. I got up the next morning and found out two things almost simultaneously. First, I was once again able to see bright light. Second, my favorite musician on the planet passed away the day before. I know my loss of light perception and the death of my favorite musician were completely unrelated, but it was like my eyes went in to mourning before I was even aware of the loss. It made the whole thing stick very firmly in my head. All this is to say that, even though you don't have much usable light perception or vision, to lose what you do have is a severe wrench and very jarring. It may come back, it may not. It may come and go. The best advice I have for you consists of one word: redirect. Find things you love to do that keep you occupied. Read, play games, listen to music, chat with people, whatever it takes to keep your mind off your eyes. Redirect. Also, hang in there. People are very adaptable, and what is and almost intolerable situation one day becomes something you can cope with the next day. Take it one minute at a time if necessary. Oh, and keep asking questions.

Re: Any smokers in here?

I am a bleeding heart blue blooded liberal, well not exactly blue, my blood is red of course, and I have smoked for over 20 years. I'm careful not to smoke where it's not permitted, but if I smoke on my own back patio, it's not anyone else's problem. No kids, no problem. When it comes to letting a cigarette, put a cigarette in your mouth and light the lighter near the end, then hold the end of the cigarette near the flame. If the wind is blowing, you may have to cup your hand around the top of the lighter to protect the flame until you get your cigarette lit.Any other questions, don't hesitate to ask. No judgment from me, just information. This topic maybe come out side and smoke a cigarette, even though it just got damn cold! Didn't I move from Iowa to Texas to get away from these temperatures?

Re: Cat owners, help please?

Some cat experts say that it is better to have more than one litter box. This ensures that the cat always has easy access to the box, especially if there's more than one cat. The rule of thumb seems to be, have the same number of litter boxes as cats, plus one extra. This will mitigate any territorial disputes around the box. If you only have one cat, and live in a small residence, one box will suffice. I know a lot of people keep the box in an out-of-the-way place, but I have also heard that cats prefer to have the box in a socially meaningful space, such as a bathroom. I actually have one litter box in my bedroom, tucked into a corner. The other box is in the bathroom at the other end of the house. Both cats use both boxes, but only when the weather is horrible. They both vastly prefer to go outside to do their business. The whole backyard is their litter box! Also, we have a black lab who likes to occasionally raid the box, so we had to find places she wouldn't be tempted to go very often. There are lots of different viewpoints out there about how to deal with litter boxes. If you're curious, look up an author named Jackson Galaxy. He did a lot of YouTube videos about cats, as well as a TV show for many years called "My Cat from Hell". He's also written several books which I recommend.

Re: Cat owners, help please?

I adopted a cat from the animal shelter three years ago, and then adopted another one almost a year ago. Since I've never owned a cat before, I've been a hard-core dog person for 38 years, I did a lot of Internet research on the care and feeding of cats. I was amazed to find almost nothing about how a blind person deals with the litter box. After asking on Facebook and Twitter, I got a lot of good information. People use gloves, plastic bags, a litter scoop, a self-cleaning box, or a combination of these. My favorite method is to use plastic bags, just as I did when I picked up after my guide dog. I agree about washing your hands after handling the litter box, no matter how small the job. Also, clumping litter is great because when the cat pees, the litter absorbs the pee and turns it into a clump that can be picked up and thrown away. I highly recommend avoiding any kind of deodorizing or scented litter. The cats hate it, and it ends up smelling horrendous! Depending on your cats attitude about her litter box, you may want to check it every day or two and throw away any lumps. I agree about replacing all the litter with new fresh litter once a month or so, but again it depends on your cat. and, if you can smell the litter box, you've waited too long to do something about its contents.I am strongly opposed to self cleaning litter boxes. The main reason is because it's possible for the box to start moving And cleaning itself while the cat is still occupied. It would be like sitting on the toilet and having it flush itself unexpectedly while you were still in the middle of taking care of business. Cats have been known to completely avoid the litter box and pee and poop elsewhere in the house after being scared by a self cleaning box. However, some people swear by them and say their cats don't mind.anyway, I could go on and on and on about cats, but I'll stop here. I agree, we should have a general discussion thread about cats. Not only their care and feeding, but how amazingly cool they are. My two have changed my life for the better in so many ways and made me a much better person.

Two of my favorite T-shirt slogans:BLIND FOLKS DO IT IN THE DARK!AndBLIND FOLKS DO IT WITH FEELING!Then there's the nasty thing I often think when encountering this manner of trollage, but wouldn't put on a T-shirt:Blindness makes sighted people stupid.I don't mean vision loss, when a sighted person loses the sense of vision. That is one of the most difficult transitions anyone  mayundergo, and I don't downplay its severity. I mean, *our* blindness makes them stupid. There is something about blindness that causes the average uninformed sighted person to stop thinking clearly. Why else, in these days of COVID-19, would the well-meaning public ignore all social distancing protocols and grab a blind person instead of communicating verbally? Yes, this is still happening, even now. I've encouraged all my blind friends who experience this bad behavior to pretend to cough or sneeze on the offender.

I'm running the latest version of iOS and not experiencing these pronunciation bugs you guys keep talking about. perhaps it's specific to a particular speech synthesizer? in my case, it's iOS Alex. While I haven't noticed problems with speech, Braille entry has developed a lot of bugs. I'd consider switching to android, but I'm not sure Brailleack would provide a better experience. Either way, as everyone else has pointed out, the final decision is up to you. Good luck!
