Re: Free and Accessible EPub readers for windows?

I use adobe reader and calibre (ebook-convert) for pdf files (depends on the file, if the pdf is properly tagged adobe reader is fine and calibre messes it up sometimes (ms word creates tagged pdfs), if untagged calibre usually does a better job). For structured file formats (epub, html, docx, etc) I use pandoc, it can convert them to eachother.

Re: Could anyone help me step by step to install Arch Linux on a Vm?

I've found some newer talkingarch iso's at https://github.com/alex19EP/talkingarchHowever, you can also boot the normal iso, and start the ssh daemon by typingsystemctl start sshdYou'll have to set a root password as well by typing passwd, followed by 2 times your new root password.Afterwards, you can login via ssh and finish the installation. To get the ip, either ocr the screen after executing the command ip addr show, or use arp -a from a command prompt. Once you're connected you can basically follow the normal archlinux installation guide, just make sure to setup either ssh access or espeakup. espeakup requires the packages espeakup and alsa-utils for alsa.

Or, alternatively, download a windows 10 iso from:https://tb.rg-adguard.net/public.php(check that the iso file you download is actually downloaded from microsoft servers!) You can download an iso in chunks, so you could do 700 mb per day over something like 5 or 6 days. Afterwards, you can upgrade each and every system with that iso. Make sure you pick the right language and bitness (32 or 64 bit). I don't think you can upgrade with an iso which has a different language, but I might be wrong.

Also (probably not what you're looking for), you can generate white noise with any audio editor, it is completely random sound.

Re: How can I download all files connected to a web page at once

wget can do recursive downloads, mirror an entire website if that's what you're looking for. It can also download files with specific extentions like mp3, and has lots and lots of options. Using it will either require wsl (windows subsystem for linux) if you have Windows 10 (only newer builds support this, not sure since when but about 2 years if I had to guess). Alternatively, search for wget for windows on google and you'll find binary builds for Windows. It's a command line program, so you might find it hard to use. Search on google for the exact task you want to accomplish with wget and chanses are someone has done it before.

Common sence is a good defence, yes. But just in case that fails / your friend gives you a usb drive with a virus, having an antivirus can realy save you some money depending on what you received. Windows defender / microsoft security essentials remain the most accessible. If you want to remove more stuff, malwarebytes will help. Malwarebytes will also clean up potentially unwanted programs, read: junk with a license agreement, which either tracks your habbits and uses it for advertising, uses your computer as cryptocurrency miner or think of some other way they can make money at your expence. Reading reviews on the software you're about to install helps avoid this though. But especially on windows 10, Windows does a fine job of it itself.

Re: hd cloning

2019-03-13 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : roelvdwal via Audiogames-reflector

Re: hd cloning

Not entirely true; Windows has a service called vss which allows you to make full system backups while it's running. That said, moving your Windows partition from an ssd to an hdd is going to be tricky. If it were an hdd to an hdd, it'd be more doable but ssds have two properties that make it harder, mainly that 1 they have larger blocks, and you need to make sure your partition is aligned properly. If it is not, suppose you have blocks of 64 kb, and you need 64 kb of data read. It'll need to pull in two blocks, one for the first bit of the data (stored in the latter halfe) and the other block for the last bit for the data (stored in the first bit of the first halfe of the second block) if this makes sence. Second, when data is deleted from an hdd, only the reffrence to that data is deleted and the data is marked as free, the data isn't actually whiped because that would envolve writing to all those sectors. So if you were to delete a 50 gb file, only a small reference will be whiped and the file data will be overwritten eventually with new data. An ssd works differently, because for an ssd a sector actually needs to be erased before you can write to it again. So when you delete a 50 gb file from an ssd, All the sectors which that file occupied will be cleared. When you do a bit by bit copy from an hdd however, it'll be hard to determine which sectors contain actually used data and which sectors contain junk and are free to write to. When you do a clean install Windows will keep in mind what drive you have and enable the proper options accordingly. For maximum performance, do a clean install. That said, you might have luck with programs disk2vhd and vhd2disk, but then again you might not, never tested it.

Re: Honest discussion, why pay for and use jaws over free screen readers?

The nvda remote insecurity thing basically had to do with someone handing out their key or using a very insecure one, THen one of the addons authors or an nvda developer, I don't know, connected to it, and sent a special string threw nvda which crashed it with an error dialog, not allowing you to restart it in the normal way because an error dialog was open. It was claimed that this resulted in loss of data, but a sighted person or narrator could have closed the dialog and fixed the issue. And the mess wouldn't have been created if the key wouldn't have been shared. If someone malicious controlls your pc via nvda remote, you're just screwed. Still unprofessional from the dev who did this though.

If I can get hold and modify remote.ini on your system, I can get at much more like your browser profile which contains (probably) your passwords if you store them. You could also send keystrokes to a victim's computer if you have an application running and activate it that way.

If you have nvda on a usb drive:1. hit windows plus m.2. windows + r3 type "D:\nvda\nvda"4 hit enter5 wait a bit6 if nothing happens hit escape thrice to be extra safe7 return to step 1, but now use drive letter e. Afterwards f, g, h, etc. I find this method faster than narrator. If you don't have sound drivers, use a usb headset, or track down the drivers, install them on a vm (if possible), remember the keystrokes needed to install and then repeat the process on the physical hardware. Using a rewritable cdrom for this can help because you can hear the media spinning.

Maybe try to show of your better knowledge when it comes to screenreaders. Or else, just create a portable nvda copy, place it on the desktop or in downloads, remember the shortcuts to get there and done.

Only do a bios upgrade if:1. you are sure it'll fix the issue your having (contact your laptop's support to check, just tell them your fan is loud).2. You know *exactly* what you are doing. If you lose power doing a bios upgrade, or flash the wrong bios image, your laptop is a very expensive brick.

Yeah maybe but remember that in the first halfe of ww II nazi germany was actually winning. Now when you're faced with rassion cuts, bombing, etc. And just when you think you've found some swing to relax somewhat, you find out it's nazi again. So looking back on it now it sounds fairly satirical, but emagine you've actually been split from your loved ones to fight in the war... this might demoralise you somewhat, especially the lovesongs.

One thing I'd like to note is that there's also good reason for making up something creapy for pageviews, so be super super sceptical of random things you find on youtube, for all you know it's just a guy with a microphone and a sound editor wanting for some cache. That said, I do know of a few ww II recordings. These first few are nazi propaganda aimed at the US and England. They are swing music (outlawed by the nazis in Germany at the time). The first verse is unchanged from the original, but they change the lyrics about halfway through the song. Note that there is a lot of Antisemitic content, so if you're easyly offended you should skip this.https://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2005/03/ … d_his.htmlThe quality sounds about right for the era, and the blog contains a lot of old radio stuff for which there's no reason to fake it. Also, wikipedia links to this page and has a page on the orchestra. Not bombproof of course, but good enough for me.The second recording is an orchestra from beethoven performed in 1944 or 1945 in germany. You can hear gunfire at the 02:30 and the 05:40 marks.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EY7lvuVjjX4The quality seems too good to be true, but several people link to it (a history of recording, a few wikipedia pages also exist about this). Also, you can actually find the full performance on cd.

Re: linux in a virtual machine or even on a flash drive

If you're inexperienced I'd go with a virtual machine. If you make an error in the linux install process, there's no harm done. However, if you boot linux on bear metal, and try to install it to a flashdrive, and you select the wrong drive, for instance, you've got a problem (unless you've got backups). It might also be possible to install linux to a flashdrive from a virtual machine, by connecting the flash drive to the vm, but then you would need to modify your bios or eufi settings.

Re: Cloning 1 particular aspect of a drive

To follow along with your example, Windows will take up about a quarter of the space on your ssd, leaving you with roughly 95 gb to work with. I'm not sure how often you use your itunes backups, but 95 gb fills up very fast if you keep some large files on that drive. What you can do is not whipe windows from your old drive and install a new windows on your ssd, giving you two operating systems. You could selectively copy over data from your old drive to your new one, such as browser profiles.

I don't think you can do this, at least not in any automated fassion. You could try deleting any big apps that take up a lot of space to shrink the used space so it'll fit on your ssd, but the better bet is probably to deactivate any comersial software, clean install, and then reinstall apps. With a 128 gb ssd, you might also want to manage it's storage a little, so when reinstalling apps you should put apps you use infrequently / are very large on your mechanical drive, and things like your web browser, other frequently used apps on the ssd.

Re: Thinking of bying a cheap windows 10 laptop, have some questions

To answer your questions:1. narrator works during all interactive parts of setup. replacing your operating system takes some time, and during that prosedure narrator won't work but you won't need to provide input either way. To start narrator, you hit ctrl + windows + enter. Just try that key combination every once in a while and wait until you hear speech. If you use your builtin pc speakers, Windows setup might also start using cortana, depending on the language selected. Then it'll start asking questions automatically.2. No, the upgrade won't whipe your hard drive *if* everything runs correctly. So do make backups. If you have the means though, keep as little as possible, reinstall your programs and copy back your files from another hard disk. That'll start you off with a clean slate and ensure that no old junk get's taken along3. If you choose to do an upgrade install anyway nvda should come up talking. I've only had it fail in a few edge cases.4. You can download windows in several ways, the media creation tool can be used, you can also download an iso file directly which can either be booted or it can be mounted and setup.exe can be started from inside windows.5. To my knowledge, only bsc games break. Aprone's games andd kitchensinc games work correctly. In addition, can you give us the name and model number of your laptop, and/or it's specifications? That'll allow us to give you better advice if upgrading is the best path forward or if getting yourself a new one is better.

To add to flackers's comment, if budget is an issue, you can also upgrade your current laptop with an ssd. If you've got 230 dollars to spend, that's most likely a better thing to do rather than buy a completely new laptop. FOr 230 dollars you're not going to get a good laptop, I doubt you can get an ssd in it. Also, the windows upgrade is still free last time I checked, you'll have to google it. So if you can make backups you can always try upgrading your current laptop and see the results. You can rollback to windows 7 within 30 days, if I remember correctly

If installing linux, you can also install it using ssh. With ssh, you can connect to a terminal, so to speak, remotely. So you have a console open on windows, and connect over the network to your archlinux vm. THe archlinux handbook probably has something on this. Also, you can ocr the vm ware window in order to get the modt of the live cd, if using windows 10 and nvda. If you don't know what to use, use vm ware workstation. If a specific feature is not available in vm ware workstation and you know virtualbox has it, you can switch. Virtualbox is slower though and sound support can be buggy at times. I'm assuming you have vmware workstation player, not workstation pro. If you have workstation pro then you can leave virtualbox behind entirely

Re: Jenux OS, The "Next Jen!"

@63 no, upgrading a specific package in arch is not supported. Only do full system upgrades. You can install a new package without upgrading your entire system though, for examplepacman -S espeakupwill install only the espeakup package andpacman -Syu espeakupwill perform a full system upgrade and install espeakup.Technically, you can dopacman -Sy espeakupwhich will get the newest version of espeakup whilst leaving all your other packages untouched, but it's a parcial upgrade and not supported. By not supported I mean it can break your entire system if you're unlucky, for example if the new package has been compyled against newer libraries, which then get upgraded as well, but other software needs the old libraries. Seehttps://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … nsupportedfor more details

Does your usb drive have an efi folder on it? if not, try creating a usb drive using rufus and make sure you select mbr partition scheme for eufi, not mbr partition scheme for bios/eufi csm. Audio drivers are hardly needed on windows 10; on most laptops audio and everything else works out of the box. Notable exception are mac books. You can also download a windows 8.1 iso with the media creation tool, then run setup.exe in the iso, select upgrade this pc and keep nothing. That'll also do an almost clean install of windows; only the old copy is kept in a temporary folder which you can remove with disk cleanup if I'm not mistaken. Most of this experience comes from using windows 10, so be careful. But if you have sighted assistance you can always clean install windows

Hi,if you want to reset windows 8.1, you can do that right from within settings. Anyhow, when resetting the pc, no input is required until the new windows copy is booted. At that point you can activate narrator with windows + enter on win 8.1. It is possible that the audio drivers don't work, so either have sighted assistance available or get a usb headset so you won't have an inaccessible system. HelloI think you might be getting so much lag is because you are using vocaliser. When you are using linux, vocaliser is not available to you, I think most people use espeak. You might want to try and switch synths before you change your operating system.Linux can work on the desktop, but keep in mind that the blind community for linux desktop use is much smaller than the Windows community, so things do tend to break more often on Linux. If you want to create a bootable usb drive, you can use rufus. I have heard good things about Ubuntu mate when it comes to beginner friendliness and accessibility. THere are almost no native Linux games available, but most Windows games can be run using wine, which is a program that translates Windows system calls into the linux equivalents. The setup prosedure to get sapi working is pritty difficult though, I have tried and failed on both gentoo and archlinux, but it might work better on Ubuntu.

Re: Win 10, updating sound drivers.

Just because the sound is first to frese in a bluescreen does not mean that the audio drivers are the issue of the bluescreen. I had a bluescreen, the first one on this box, about 2 days ago, first the audio started stuttering with a frequency of 50 hz (the same frequency as the buzz you hear when having an ungrounded amp in most parts of the world except in the US I believe), then about a second later the screen went blue. The cause was a wifi driver. Also, it might be wiser to just remove the audio driver all together: most audio devices can actually be controlled with a standard driver included with windows. If you try removing the driver do have a usb soundcard ready.

Re: Reinstalling sound Drivers after Clean install??

It is not necessary to remove the microsoft driver at all. When running the realtek installer, it will autodetect the other install, uninstall that one first, then ask you to reboot, then run itself again, install, ask for another reboot, and you're done. Just run the file, that's all that's required.

When uninstalling the old driver, sound will temporaryly fail, before switching back to the old driver, in most cases. Otherweise go for a usb headset. waiting a while and hitting alf f for finnish should also do the trick, it should reboot automatically.

Re: Reinstalling sound Drivers after Clean install??

Hello, you can just upgrade the realtek drivers without an externel usb sound card, in most cases. Do watch the volume though, when the driver upgrades the volume can get set to maximum.I have had the exact same issue, wanting to connect a 5.1 surround sound set to my system. The sollution is using an older driver. The driver that works for me has filename 0007-64bit_Win7_Win8_Win81_Win10_R280.exe. I'd be willing to upload it, but it is quite large so if you can find a source of your own that would be quicker.

Re: AMD against Intel?

You should really also check other sources, lots of hardware comparisons around comparing amd and intel. From what I've red (this was a while ago), intel performs better in single threaded applications, like games. Single threading means that a game can only execute one instruction at a time because it needs those results for the next instruction. If you are going to run lots of vms, rizen might be a good option, I think it's somewhat better when it comes to multithreading. One virtual machine does not depend on another virtual machine, so they can actually execute instructions at the same time. Never the less, there have been much better comparisons done and I am not going to repeat them, see for your self. Also remember to check meltdown / spector speed differences on processors.

Keep in mind that installers almost always have shortcut keys. Just try mashing alt+n for next, alt+y for yes alt+i for install alt+f for finnish, and as a lost resort the spacebar. That'll get you threw the installer, hopefully. I can't remember how I got threw it, but it is doable.

I think you need to get winetricks if you don't have it already and install speechcfg. I'm not sure about the name, if I remember correctly, in terminal type winetricks dll list, find something with speech and install it. There is a guide available on applevis for windows games on mac with some kind of extra application, you might be able to get a few pointers from there and the wine wiki. Re: How to turn off screen in windows 10?

If you are using a mac, you can trun off your screen in windows 10, but it is complicated:1. set your display as dim as possible with f1 or fn + f12. go into the device manager and disable and reenable the display driver. This will cause the screen to go dark.3. repeat these steps when the screen gets brighter again, when plugging it in to ac power or when dialing up the brightness manually this needs to be redone. It isn't a good solution, but it works.

Switching to another dns server might fix the issue:go to control pannel, network and sharing centre, change adaptor settings, select your adapter in the list, hit applications, choose properties, select internet protocol tcp/ipvp4 from the list or something similar not ipvp6, unless your isp offers it, then go to properties, find the radio buttons about dns, switch it to use the following dns servers, in the preferred field, type 8.8.8.8, in the secondary server, type 8.8.4.4, hit ok and exit out of the dialog. Note: these dns servers are from google. You might want to open a command prompt and type ipconfig /flushdns to empty your dns cache after this procedure, but I'm not sure it's necessary.

Re: advice needed after clean install of windows on new ssd

The system reserved partition houses the windows recovery environment. If your computer shuts down in an abnormal way, you can choose to go into this environment and performe repairs on your windows install if required. I also beleive this partition is required when using bitlocker drive encryption for your entire OS. There is no screenreader in this environment, and bitlocker will create the partition if it wasn't created by you when you turn it on, so you can just leave your partitions as they are. Next time when installing windows, you might want to select the disk and let windows handle partitioning, by just not creating any and just telling the installer you want to install windows into unalicated space.

if there is no way to forward any kind of port in your router or your connection is filtered, the only way that I know of is to route your traphic elsewhere. You could do this with a vps and openvpn, connect with your pc to your openvpn server, transfer the ports you need or all of them to the client connected. You can also buy vpn services elsewhere, but you'll generally only get one port, not of your choosing. For games like crazy party, sound rts en dragon pong this is not a problem, but games like topspeed and other games that won't let you customize your ports will not work that way.

Re: introduction to our problems

The issue with python is this:yes, there are plenty of encryption libraries, encrypting stuff isn't the problem, keeping it encrypted is. Python is a high level language, unlike something like c++. All the compilers that compile python code in to an exe *have* to store the python code somewhere. since they are open source and not designed for code obfuscation, you can extract the source code out of a compiled python program, and get the encryption key. Bgt is the same when it comes to high level programming, but it's not used mainstream, and no one actually took the time to figure out how bgt stores it's encryption keys and decrypt the bite code of a program. If you want to make it hard for someone to steal your sourcecode in python, you will have to modify the python interpreter, I don't have experience with that, but it's not easy. If you want ease of use and if you're only going to create classic games like simple bop it and troopanum, bgt wi
ll serve you well. If you want to do interesting things like use libaudioverse for 3d sound or use gui's, python might be a better choice if you can get over it that decompiling your programs is relatively easy without substantial effort on your part to change the python interpreter

Re: Linux: Wine issues

xvfb is a package that basically creates a fake x-server which acts just like one, but actually doesn't do anything. I can see if I've got a debian vm somewhere. You should probably either create snapshots of your servers so you can restore them when needed, and have your own linux virtual machines. Debian at least is not that hard to set up, provided your sound hardware works.

Re: Linux: Wine issues

The following might work, found it on stack exchange and added the way to install the package:apt-get install XvfbXvfb :1export DISPLAY=:1then try running the program again.I've not tried these instructions personally, use at your own risk!

Re: How do I configure and install windows xp on an old laptop?

Ah, good old widnows xp. I have some experience in this area.1. mount the xp iso2. extract deploy.cab located in the support directory.3. run setupmgr.exe from the directory, you need a windows xp system for the best support.4. generate an answer file, auto partition might work, but not tested5. place the answer file in the i386 directory and name it winnt.sif.6. I reccomend creating a bootable cd, but you might be able to use a usb drive for this purpose. Advantages of cds are that they make noise when reading, and that they don't show up in the windows xp partition screen.7. make sure that the target harddrive is clean, you can use win 7 pe for this. You can also use the windows xp installer for this, with knfb reader or something.8. if you didn't boot the windows xp cd/usb to remove the partitions, do so now. Wait until you hear no cd activity for a few minutes, or just wait a while if you use usb.9. if the
drive is clean, just hit enter a couple of times to partition.windows xp will now install. If you got an error during the setup having to do with your display, it might be trying to fix your screen resolution during setup. A hard powerdown will make the installer skip that screen.10. Now it can get tricky. If you are lucky, you've got an audio driver out of the box. If you are not, you will have to install it manually. You can install it on a windows xp vm and get the shortcuts from the installer. This is all I can remember, it's been a while since I did this. You might also need a SATA driver if it's a newer laptop.

Re: Trying Nvda

If you want to change the punctuation during say all:go into the nvda menuselect configuration profileshit newenter a name and select say all as it's activation triggeractivate the profilemake the changes to punctuation, or voice, if you want todeactivate the profileyou can get into alerts in ie by hitting f4 and shift tab a couple of times, maybe there is a better way to do it. But you should probably give firefox a try too, since most nvda users/developers use it, so it's slightly faster and has less alerts and more plane dialogs. If you are feeling  even more adventurous, you should give chrome a try too. It's a lot faster with loading pages, but a bit less accessible in my opinion.
