Re: A Question about the October Daye series

Hmmm, not read the raven's shadow series, though I admit urban fantasy is less my thing. I only got into October Daye because my lady read one book, which turned out to be book 8, thought they were really good and wanted to read the hole series. We wound up reading them together as a sort of cooperative project, though of course some books are better than others. Each book is  indeed named for a shake spear quotation, and there are some Shakespearean nods in the text, for example one major character is called Tybalt, the  Faerie King is Oberon and one of the two faerie queens is Titania.however, I don't think there's any major underlying significance other than that McGuire likes her shake spear and wants to share it with others. She always gives the quotation that the title comes from as an epigraph to the book, which is nice to know since I confess while I have seen a few plays and wouldn't pass up the chance to see another (at least of the tragedies), I'm not exactly a Shakespeare buff myself, indeed my lady knows her Shakespeare much better than I do.

Re: A Question about the October Daye series

Hi Dark.Thank you very much. Once again you have summed up things perfectly. I gave you a thumbs-up. I'm currently reading the raven's shadow series by Anthony ryan, but I'm nearly finished with that so I'll start October daye after.I've noticed the books are titled with Shakespeare lines, is that significant or just a little inside joke?

Re: A Question about the October Daye series

@Guitarman, yes indeed October Daye can use magic. While as a changeling her magic isn't as strong as pure blooded fey, she stil can. Indeed October Daye is a world where pretty much everyone uses magic as a matter of course, since Fey need  to weave human disguise illusions to get around in the real world, and also use magic to enter another Fey's Knou, or kingdom. Every Fey race also has a racial talent, and changelings and mixed bloods inheritt some of them. Tuatha Dedanon teleport, Condila have floating globes of light called merry dancers they can direct around, Banic have cleaning magic etc. As half Dunya Sidthh, Toby has blood magic and so can tell another Fey's race by just looking and also scan memories in blood. I will say it irritates me that halfway through the series, Toby suddenly discovers a way to become hugely more powerful, and one thing which irritates me in later books is that rather than, as at the start, Toby always having the odds against her, she sort of becomes a very self righteous steam roller who is way tougher than almost everyone else. I freely admit I hate super  hero fiction myself and the series does sort of go a bit that way.All that being said McGuire does find great ways to still have Toby depowered, and while I admit I thought the series was going into a bit of a slump around books 9 and 10, my lady and I recently read book 11 which was really good (I've written a review which will probably appear soon). So yes, I'd still recommend the series over all.

A Question about the October Daye series

2019-09-26 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Off-topic room : Guitarman via Audiogames-reflector

A Question about the October Daye series

Hi.I like urban fantasy a lot, and I've enjoyed most of the books I've read. I looked at Seanan McGuire's books recently, and they look very intriguing. My question about October Daye is can she use magic? This won't stop me from reading the series, but I've googled the magic system in the series and can find nothing. The reason I ask this is because I don't like fantasies where everyone can use magic except the main character. When I read something like this, it frustrates me that whatever you learn about the magic system, everything is second hand. I can't wait to read the books, but I would like an idea of what I'm getting into first.
