Thanks Muhammad, I've sent you an email containing a download, let me know if you have any issues with it!Also thanks to the other people who purchased the game yesterday, emails sent.In regards to Steam, the campaign is starting to get a bit of traction now, though may still be quite a while until it is green lit. I am renting a load of equipment for virtual reality development in the next couple of weeks and hope to get a VR version onto Steam soon which should hopefully help the current Steam campaign for PC release.Cheers,Dan

Re: A new audio game from a new developer - Dark Passenger

Hi guys,Still in process of getting the game onto more sites, all main distributors have been contacted and have pages set up, just waiting on them to review and hopefully give the go ahead. In regards to taking payment directly, I'm trying to figure out what would be a feasible way to do this. I cannot set up an E-commerce solution easily on the website without paying out a significant amount of money to the web hosts and thus negating the point of an E-commerce solution all together at this stage.I could put on a PayPal button for purchasing the game onto my website and then I'll be able to check the email addresses of buyers on the PayPal info screens and send you the game via email. What would be really cool is something like DropBox which just downloads the file from a server when a purchase is made, anything like this out there?Let me know what you think.Cheers,Dan

Yo Dan. Maybe you're aiming for the wrong public. Most sighted people I know that can be interested in an audio only experience are the old gamers looking for the challenge this gaming generation is not whiling to give them, or people that know blind and sighted friends and are looking for something to play along with them. So, perhaps if you change the marketing behind the product...Best regards, Haramir.

Re: A new audio game from a new developer - Dark Passenger

Hi guys,It's new demo day as promised! I've uploaded a new version of the game with some changes as found below.https://www.dropbox.com/sh/uuezvppey91a … bxZca?dl=0Patch notes:Dark Passenger Demo V2 - 5th September 2016General Changes:* Added a short audio intro when the game starts.* Players will now hear a bump sound when moving into a solid object such as a wall* Made many areas much wider and made the walls less obstructive.Bug Fixes:* Players should no longer stick to walls, movement should be much more fluid when moving near walls.* Fixed footsteps sounds and other sounds meant to be at the player's location not being centred.* Footstep sounds should now play while moving up and right at the same time.Level Changes:Starting area:* Made the starting area much wider and restructured the area, changing the location of almost everything.* The heart beat has been made a bit less rapid and a bit quieter.* The player has been given an extra 10 seconds to find the tranquilliser, the guide now tells the player to hurry up finding the tranquilliser 10 seconds later than previously to compensate.Second area (Sleeping guard area):* Reduced sleeping guard's detection range and slightly increased his sound threshold before he awakes.Fourth areas (Patrolling guards area):* Guards have not been skipping leg day, they are now a bit faster.Final demo area (Escape area):* Changed the guide's pathing to allow the player to more easily follow the guide and be less prone to walking into traps.* Added a voice segment to let the player know the demo is over once completed. Not yet implemented:* No menu as of yet, will try to put this in later but no schedule on this as of yet.* No Controller support as of yet, will look into this shortly.Recent Comments:Ishan: What do you mean by Logo sound? Do you mean the sound that plays when you see a developer's logo in a game? If so, I'll admit I never even considered that! especially since no logo shows since there's no graphics at all!hanif: I think Quick time events can be really hit or miss, they are very Marmite... people rather love them or hate them! Currently there isn't much of a focus on combat in the game as its simply moving around paying attention to sound to avoid enemies. At the moment I would like to keep things simple, especially since sighted people will likely struggle without the use of their eyes as it is playing the game. Me and my friends have already died countless times due to not being used to relying on our ears, it's a good laugh. That said, the game does become quite a bit harder a few levels after the demo ends, if the first release of the full game turns out to be too easy or too simple, I'll certainly look into how I can mix it up a bit, it's no fun if the player never dies after all...I'm going to get some sleep, tomorrow I'll get that new thread started. Let me know what you think of the latest demo!Cheers,Dan

Re: A new audio game from a new developer - Dark Passenger

Hello,I would first like to address a mechanical issue that I would like to solve and get your feedback on the matter:It seams an issue with the game tends to be not knowing when the player is moving into a solid object such as a wall where they cannot pass, I originally thought to circumvent this issue by having the player's footsteps audible when moving. Therefore if the footsteps cannot be heard, the player is not moving and may be hitting a wall... I don't think this is working too well as it can be quite awkward to navigate out of tight areas by not being able to tell which direction the walls are in as well as footsteps sometimes being not very audible due to other sounds that may play at the same time. Therefore, I propose a solid object collision sound system where if the user impacts a solid object they cannot pass, they hear a sound in the direction they have crashed into for example if the player approaches a wall straight on, they would he
ar a bumping sound in the direction straight on from the user. If this is also a tight corner and they cannot move to the left, they will also hear a bump sound to the left when they try to move that direction. Please let me know what you think or make any suggestions. Now onto the most recent comments:SLJ: Glad to see the Mac version is working! Thanks for testing it.Ishan: I can understand the confusion of not being able to find the tranquiliser, there is currently an audio cue for a computer humming which hints where the tranquiliser is, as stated by the guide; the tranquiliser is near the computer. I'll re-record that part and make it a bit clearer, espically since the guide states that the desk is to the user's right, which is not correct.Ishan: Yeah, I think a menu system may be useful and will be encoperated shortly. I originally envisioned not having a menu system as I felt it would ruin the purity of the game not having any visual elemen
ts. But in the end of the day, a menu is not always displayed on the user interface and is not part of gameplay either. I figured I'll instead bind typical menu items to hotkeys but that is a fallacy in itself because the user would need to actually tab out of the game to look at a README file to know those keys... So yeah, a menu is coming. Hello,SLJ: Glad to see the Mac version is working! Thanks for testing it.I can understand the confusion of not being able to find the tranquiliser, there is currently an audio cue for a computer humming which hints where the tranquiliser is, as stated by the guide; the tranquiliser is near the computer. I'll re-record that part and make it a bit clearer, espically since the guide states that the desk is to the user's right, which is not correct.Yeah, I think a menu system may be useful and will be encoperated shortly. I originally envisioned not having a menu system as I felt it would ruin the purity of the game not having any visual elements. But in the end of the day, a menu is not always displayed on the user interface and is not part of gameplay either. Re: A new audio game from a new developer - Dark Passenger

@IdeaCabinHey! Thank you for that, with that I'm definitely going to try the demo. This game sounds like it might be a lot like BlindSide, which in my opinion was an excellent game. If you want, you can find out more about it here http://www.blindsidegame.com.I understand completely about Steam and don't blame you for wanting to have your game on it. It is a venue for sales and you'd be crazy to ignore it. But it is a problem for visually impaired people who depend on a screen reader. To that end you might want to look at Guide Dog Games, if I am correct, it is a game sales and distribution system specifically for the visially impaired, https://guidedoggames.com:7081/.@OthersI don't understand what the objection is to asking if this game will be available without Steam. I agree that my comments about Steam were a bit harsh and did nothing to add to the
conversation, for that all I can do is apologize. But the question about whether the game will be available without Steam is no different from anyone asking if a game on the macOS will be available on Windows, if the answer is "no", then there's really not much point in looking at the game any further, unless you are a Mac user.

Hello all,Last night I worked with a friend who is another developer but has much more knowledge in Mac and Linux, we tried to get the demos for Mac and Linux working and ended up making a deployment environment which will allow me to release the game and any changes to it very easily for these platforms. Please could you try out the Mac and Linux demos and let me know if it works. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/uuezvppey91a … bxZca?dl=0Again, no feedback incorporated or game play elements changed as of yet, currently focusing on getting each platform working and then we'll go from there.Dark: Thank you for your work and support, I will definitely make a thread there once I've got all three platform's demos working and then link to them in the new thread. I would feel honored to get some news on the site when the game is a bit more polished and closer to release, this community is great for feedback and I can feel people's passion for new games. Also, that Ios screen reader sounds awesome.the player: Yeah, I really like the look of Gog, especially since they actually play your game and give you feedback on it. I'll see what I can do to get the game on there. Ishan: When you say the footsteps lag, what do you mean specifically? That the sounds play too late when moving or do you mean that you hear the sound even after you have stopped moving? Thank you for your recommendations, I'll be sure to check out blind legend too.SLJ: Thanks, let me know if the Mac demo works if you can give it a try, hopefully it runs this time!

Hi idea cabin! well shades of doom? I think the only game which will help you to make this game better is descent into madness. the game is very buggy but you can get the idea of which puzzles you can add. I tried this game but failed. the game run smoothly but I found no horrer at the anker's voice. also the footsteps lags very much. the man said that get the tranquliser but there is no beaps which can tell you where it is. I think the heart beating sound you use is very shrill. Look at the blind legend sound of heart beating. it is more balanced. Thanksand welcome to the forum! Ishan

Re: A new audio game from a new developer - Dark Passenger

Hi IdeaCabin. Welcome to the forum, and appologies for the slight drama here.Unfortunately I've been a trifle busy what with being at music school recently so haven't looked over Dark passenger myself, though will be glad to as the game sounds interesting and more 3D audiogames are definitely a good thing, indeed had I been a little less taken up with matters I would have moved this topic to the new releases room where newly released games are announced, including playable demos of upcoming games. I won't move this topic as is, but I could suggest you post a fresh topic over there with a link to download your demo to be a little more visible and get some more feedback, we can also see about some news about the game for the front of the site too.As regards platforms,Windows has the most visually impared users currently, so a Windows port that can be run without the hassles of Steam would be extremely welcome. There are a number
of blind people on Mac os, and a smaller number with Linux, but it's fair to say that Windows still has the lion's share of desktop users. For portable platforms, Ios is extremely! popular, owing to the inherent accessibility of the os with it's built in voiceover screen reader. There  are a smaller community of Blind and Vi android users as well, though again Ios probably has the lion's share in terms of portable platforms.

Hello everyone, Jayde: Thank you for your feedback and support, I will definitely give Shades of Doom a look!Jabberwocky: Thanks, I'll look into sorting out another Mac build.SLJ: Yeah, that's the end of the demo when you go through the window, glad to see you got there!Figment: Yes, the game will release on other platforms than Steam. Steam tends to get the most exposure as well as getting large amounts of downloads, so I am wanting to get Dark Passenger onto there. I will not neglect other platforms though and Dark Passenger will likely be released on other platforms before Steam due to them being more flexible. I will upload early access onto other platforms soon, just want to get a few things ironed out and polished first.Speaking of other platforms, what platforms would you guys prefer me to use?

Moderation! Could everyone please! reread my comments in the preceeding moderation message about opinions, how those opinions are put and matters not being personal. If people canot moderate themselves, then this topic will be closed and moderation warnings handed out to certain offenders. Frankly this is not the sort of behaviour this community needs to show to a new developer, whatever opinion people have about Steam, since with some of the attitudes here it wouldn't surprise me if Ideacabin said "Well that is a nasty bunch of people who I really don't! want to get involved with" Again I repeat as it says in the faq, the correct way to deal with insults or hightened emotions is not! to break out the flame throwers yourself and retaliate in kind.

@Figment: No, this is not difficult to understand at all, that you don't get your hopes up for this game and the developer in generel. So, why do you even post in this topic? You don't have any feedback for the developer when you don't wanna play the demo. So, what is the reason for posting when you don't have anything relevant to say? This is the thing I don't understand. You have the choice to play a demo without using Steam, but you don't want to. That's your choice. But what is the point of posting complaints about Steam when no one is forcing you to use it? You don't know much about the game since you haven't played it and you don't wanna play it, so I only find your complaints and crap about Steam useless, because no one is forcing you to use it. This is my last comment, and I hope you got my point. If not, then I can't do much about it,. Then I just don't hope the developer will care about your not so nice co
 mments...

Hello folks. At Figment. I understand you don't like Steam for whatever reasons you have to do so, but it doesn't gives you the right to throw stones at it or the developer of the game just for that. The game is not finished yet, so play the demo if you wish, and let us all wait and see what will be the final product, and for what platforms it will be available. At everyone else involved. Let us be reasonable, even if Figment wasn't very polite, he put his point and it apparently wont change no matter what is said. So let's bury the subject for it wont result into anything good.Best regards, Haramir.

I'd much rather spend my time on games I know I'll be able to get.I don't see how asking the developer if he'll offer his game outside of Steam is complaining. Now, get off my back! So, you're just complaining and don't wanna play the demo, which you can download from Dropbox which has been requested, just because the game currently only can be bought from Steam? Dude, the game is not finnish yet... Why do you not tell the developer and others how to make things accessible instead of just sitting there and complaining all the time? Or even better: Why not just leave the topic if you don't wanna check out the demo, and give the developer some great advice? Your attitude is not going to change things in a good way.

Moderation! @JAyde, as the forum guidelines say personal attacks including insults are absolutely and categorically out! As you recognized yourself this is something which causes a lot of drama and hassle, so please  lay off the insults in the future.@Figment, if another member insults you, please do not insult them back or make aspersions on their character. Report the post and moderators will deal with it, as indeed I am doing now. Simply snapping back and going into long rants against said member and their views causes yet more prolonged hassle, again, this is noted in the faq. I'll also say in general, everyone is entitled to an opinion, but bare in mind that since there are no tones on the internet, opinions (especially negative ones), do need to be expressed clearly so that it is clear that what is being disagreed with is the view not the person. Now, back to games!I personally hope that like the Smugglers and Cog titles, there wi
ll be a none steam version of the game, since Valve it is true have shown no interest in accessibilityfir blind or vi gamers despite various potitians and suggestions on the matter, and the workarounds for the steam client with game installation are less than friendly to screen reading  programs.

Off topic@JadeEveryone is entitled to their opinion and nobody has the right to try to prevent someone else from expressing theirs.Responses like yours I just consider as someone who's intolerant of the opinions of others, so they lash out when somebody expresses an opinion that doesn't agree with theirs. What I don't do is make things worse by telling other people to ignore you.You say the way I dismiss things I don't like will cause people to ignore me. I believe people will ignore your hostile responce to an opinion that differed from yours long before they'll ignore my opinion of Steam. They'll just read it, then either agree or disagree, then move on.If you want to hassle with trying to access an inaccessible program, like Steam, go for it, and enjoy yourself!Just don't piss on me because I choose not to use Steam, it's my choice. In my view, Steam is an invasive DRM that requires an always on i
nternet connection, and is completely unnecessary to the game, it adds absolutely nothing to a game's playability , or how enjoyable the game might be. It's just additional baggage I'd rather not have to deal with.If the developer of this game comes back and says that the only way to buy the game is through Steam, then I'll just scratch the game off my list of games I want to play and move on. That too is my choice. We now return you to our regularly scheduled programming, already in progress.

Troll is the wrong word. I apologize. But you do fling words around sometimes without being fully cognizant of the effect those words will have. I just did so, with the word "troll". I didn't have a better word, so I used it, and it was inappropriate.Let's just say this: I don't like that particular practice. If you call something spyware when it's not, people are going to get nervous or dismiss you, and you're not going to get your point across.See, not wanting to mess with Steam? Totally your prerogative. That's not anyone else's issue but yours. I wouldn't have said a word in that case.I've had issues with you in the past, which are probably what informed my spur-of-the-moment decision to refer to you as a "resident troll". That's not an excuse, mind you. You do seem to dismiss things a lot because you don't like them, and you do it (to my way of seeing things) kinda high-handedly, but
I suppose that's your prerogative too.

Maybe spyware isn't quite right, although it does report to Valve everytime you play a Steam game. Probably it would be more accurate to call it a DRM system that requires an always on internet connection so it can verify your license everytime you run a Steam game.I used to use Steam before I lost my vision, but quit when I discovered that the Steam version of most games had way more problems than the non Steam versions did.I hear many people complain about DRM and how they have problems with it, I guess you could say Steam is a good example of that, since it is, first and foremost, a DRM system. At the end of the day, I concluded that Steam doesn't offer anything to me that out weighed its disadvantages.I play games to have fun, the last thing I need is to have to wrestle with an inaccessible piece of DRM just to play a game. The dropbox downloads that don't need Steam are only demos, at present, if I wanted to play the whole game,
I'd have to buy it through Steam.(After being called a troll by Jade because he doesn't agree with my opinions of Steam, I edited my original post.)

Re: A new audio game from a new developer - Dark Passenger

Dan,First of all, welcome to the forum, and please don't mind the resident troll calling Steam spyware. Steam is a pain in the tail, but it's not spyware anymore than any other program that monitors your connection to the internet to function...and a lot of programs do this. So, I'll start this by saying I haven't yet tried the game, but I've read the thread. The things I'm about to say might be covered by the game, but I don't think so, given the feedback I'm seeing.1. You said you had an "interact" function, but scrapped it because you didn't want people just randomly hitting a key to find stuff. This could be neatly sidestepped by giving every item its own distinct sound. It doesn't have to be a fast, annoying or loud sound (a jacket left on the floor might rustle every few seconds, an oxygen tank might let out a wheeze or two now and then), and you may think it clutters the ambiance. Maybe it would
. But it would also give blind players audible landmarks to focus on. This is slightly less necessary if the path through the game is entirely linear. If it's entirely linear and you can't possibly miss stuff, then it's not so much needed, and your current functionality will work.2. As far as passages and the like, the game Shades of Doom does something here that you might like. It has a looping sound file that is almost always present, a faint whoosh of wind. The wind is centered if the passage is running from front to back, but you'll hear wind in your left or right ear if a passage opens up on either side (or both). This wind sound can be fairly faint, particularly if this game isn't especially loud or fast. This won't give players a way to "look ahead", but will let them react quickly to new information when they get it, navigationally speaking.3.That's all I've got so far. I will probably take a more in-depth
look at this. I wish you the very best, and congratulate you for trying something that isn't just a clone.

Re: A new audio game from a new developer - Dark Passenger

Hello folks! Well, thanks to the guide, I managed to set up a steam account.Dan, the game has alot of potential, I have a few suggestions if you care to hear. But as it is, it reminds me of a game called Inside. My ideas are:1- It doesn't seem to be a horror game at all. I don't tell it as an insult though, since it can be perfect as a misterious pusle based game.2- Add a key to interact with objects. Interacting can be one of the following: Hold an item, drag, climb, open doors, etc. You may add one key to fit all those functions, or have different keys if you prefer.3- Add a key to run.4- Add a key to sneak.I can also offer my help if you need more voice actors, I'm not professional though.Best regards, Haramir.

Gene, while I do agree that Steam's drm is a pain in the ass, it isn't the developer's fault. This is, as far as we are aware, Dan's first foray into audio game development, so give him a chance. Then later platforms can be discussed. Dan, if you're looking for a platform to distribute the game, try dezura. It's a distribution platform that allows you to distribute the games free of any drm, so no constant license checking like Steam.

It is spyware, every time you run a Steam game it connects with Valve to check your license, a.k.a. always on DRM. And you can bet that Valve records every instance of when and how long you play any Steam game. Thanks, but no friggin' way!

Figment, nice welcoming message from you, really.Ofcourse everyone knows Steam isn't accessible for us (in your opinion) and it's something like spyware (better to know what you are writing before posting) and that person will be thumb down? yeah.Anyway, better concentrate on important things:I downloaded and tried the game and it sounds great. Infact, you need to search the way exactly like one step to the left / right and trying going forward as there's no indications the patch is wide open or not.
