Re: Do you use the numpad while writing code?

If you want a good no-thrills mechanical keyboard I like the Code Keyboard.  They last at least a year with very, very heavy usage, and when I did have one break they lived up to their warranty no questions asked. The new ones are actually also programmable, accessibly.  There's no app for it, it's all done via keys on the keyboard.  However it should be noted that you have to do a little reconfiguration to get the applications key working, and I don't remember how I did it now that it's done.  I had to shift a couple keys from the modifiers at the bottom that they use for programming to the break/scroll lock/print screen keys. The programmability doesn't matter to me, but they give you a choice of any of the Cherry MX switches including the harder to find Cherry MX Clear.  They may also still sell the $10 switch sample thing so that you can decide which of the mechanical keyboard switches you like before buying.I had to upgrade to mechanical a while ago because I type so fast now that non-mechanical keyboards cause me to miss keys.  It's very odd.  I type with more force and pressure than anyone I know, but if you start going fast enough you end up just brushing some keys instead of pressing them and the stupid bubble switch keyboards that you get at best buy or whatever just stop doing it so much.  If I go non-mechanical which does sometimes happen when traveling, my accuracy floors and I have to slow down quite a bit.

I also have a redragon keybord, but I dont advise buying it, its great but, I have the f, f3, and the left controle keys reasontly sometimes just stop responding on it, I use he numpad when codeing, just for the + and -

Re: Do you use the numpad while writing code?

I also don't use the numpad when I am writing code. I actually ordered a mechanical keyboard a couple of days ago and the store I ordered from had surprisingly low amount of the so called tenkeyless keyboards. As the space in my desk is a limited resource, it was a requirement for me. SO I orderedd the Redragon k561r, will see how it turns out to be.

Re: Do you use the numpad while writing code?

True point. Didn't know that going in, so whenever I get a replacement I will keep that in mind. And graphics won't be an issue because Razer managed to cram a GTX 1650 into the 13-inch Razer Blade Stealth, if I'm not mistaken.

Re: Do you use the numpad while writing code?

@9When doing serious programming, you end up using shift+number so much that you learn it whether you want to or not.  You end up doing more shift+number than actual numbers. I sometimes work with code that actually does more shift+numbers than letters--this is possible, but you don't usually see it outside large C/C++ codebases. Also that number pad on a laptop is going to raise the price by probably around $300 (because it means a bigger screen) and make it several inches larger than it would otherwise be.

Re: Do you use the numpad while writing code?

I'm honestly surprised not many people use the numpad. Maybe that's because I don't have the "reach up to reach the right keys" quickly, but I tend to use it for the numbers, not the / es. Also mine you can't use shift and the keys to even do that, so I understand why it wouldn't be very useful.

This was really strange to hear, since I really don't use the numpad at all, let alone for coding.

Re: Do you use the numpad while writing code?

I neglected to mention in my initial post this came from posts/reviews about certain mechanical keyboards, so this idea isn’t coming from other devs. Just a weird, random claim I found scouring online for mech keyboards.

Re: Do you use the numpad while writing code?

I personally don't use it for programming itself, but its pretty handy since you can put certain shortcuts on it without needing to press more than one key at the same time. Like putting the "comment/uncomment selected text", "tabify/untabify" or open certain views, like the previous mentioned when working with VS. That might come in handy, but is nothing that couldn't be done in other ways.

Re: Do you use the numpad while writing code?

yes, if it is 2012 and I need to use the Jaws scripts for Visual Studio which for some godawful reason couldn't be customized to move keys off the numpad back then. I don't know why they did that, made the admittedly buggy official scripts unusable with laptops.Otherwise no.  And I've never heard anyone making the claim that it's something devs want either--indeed, last I checked most macs don't have them despite being primarily for programmers and artists these days.

Re: Do you use the numpad while writing code?

I don't even have a numpad. If I had one though I wouldn't use it for programming -- there's absolutely no benefit to its existence in that particular problem domain. '/'/'*'/'-' easier to access? No thanks, especially when '.' and '/' are right next to one another on a standard keyboard.

No. I don't even use the numpad to begin with. I have the full 108 keyboard layout but I've never really had much use for most of them.

Do you use the numpad while writing code?

Silly question, I know, but how many of you use the numpad while coding? I saw a few posts claiming how devs would prefer keyboards with the numpad for “access to more keys” which I guess means certain things are more short-hand like *, /, and -. Outside of this, though, I find it hard to believe that this claim is true. I’ve been trying to come up with reasons why a numpad would be preferrable, but I’m coming up with nothing substantial. Just figured I’d ask.
