Re: Focus 40 Blue Braille Cell Issue

I got the issues resolved. The display is not broken. It simply needed to be cleaned. I'll have to remember to do that on a regular basis.

Re: Focus 40 Blue Braille Cell Issue

But if those two pins fail to go down, that means they're perpetually stuck in the up position, combination of whoever last owning it not having regularly cleaned the display at least once a week, and it being a cheep display.

Re: Focus 40 Blue Braille Cell Issue

Cleaning the display helped a little bit. I'm still noticing that a couple of pins won't go down which creates a little issue when reading certain letters. I read to turn the display upside down and clean the pins both when they're up and down. I'll be trying this in a little bit to see if these final issues go away. I'm pretty sure the display isn't broken. It's probably a little dirty with dust and god knows what else sticking a few pins.

Re: Focus 40 Blue Braille Cell Issue

you might be able to get away with isopropal diluted with water, but try it at your own risk. The reason I say dilute it is that the water will help fight the staining property of the alcohol. Hey but I am no expert in this field, so like I said try at your own risk, I ain't responsible if you break it further.

Re: Focus 40 Blue Braille Cell Issue

If they are still at least attempting to move up and down, i e, the lever still acts as it should, then yes, use the cloth, but I wouldn't use rubbing alcohol myself, just warm water, making sure there's no moisture whatsoever. Diagnostic mode should allow you to raise all the pins up, down, then up again, so what you do is first raise all the pins up, then thoroughly clean each cell with the cloth. Release all the pins, then repeat, only this time you're cleaning an empty display. Raise them up, and this time use a completely dry cloth to dry each cell. It's as close to a manufacturer clean as you're gonna get without paying. On the other hand, if the pins can't even move up and down with difficulty, than you're out of luck. And a fair warning, $300 is the flat rate. As far as I know, that's the diagnostic fee. They look at it, then give you a repair cost. Honestly would recommend trading it in for a notetaker, you could get a high dollar v
alue off of it since it has 0 cells. I've felt the focus 40's cells and they honestly ain't got shit compared to a display like the one on the brailliant/braillenote. Orbit reader doesn't count in this comparison because that's in a league of its own so to speak. The technology's too new, and already has advantages over any predecessor, so you can't compare any motorized braille display to it.

I couldn't tell ya because I don't have a disp, but speaking logically, if all the cells are up except the ones which won't come up, then ya ain't cleanin' nothin', lol. Idk what ta tell ya ta do since a ain't got one muhself.

Re: Focus 40 Blue Braille Cell Issue

I don't think the dots quit working. I think it's simply a little sticky. How do I safely clean the braille cells? I read that you put the display into diagnostic mode with all cells fully raised and use a cloth with rubbing alcohol to gently rub down the cells. Is this correct?

Re: Focus 40 Blue Braille Cell Issue

I had a display once where certain dots would intermittently stop working. And speaking from experience, Freedom Scientific and their dealers do not charge cheaply for this kind of braille display repair ... Be prepared to possibly pay a lot more than $350. Oh, and it might also be a good idea to ask them to replace all of the pins so that you do not have to send it in to them again in a couple of months when more pins go down. Personally, I would never buy a braille display that cheap from any manufacturer--it's far too risky.

Re: Focus 40 Blue Braille Cell Issue

If the pins aren't moving, they've already been jammed. You're gonna have to send it in for repair I'm afraid.

Focus 40 Blue Braille Cell Issue

2016-12-27 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Off-topic room : Chris via Audiogames-reflector

Focus 40 Blue Braille Cell Issue

Hello,My mom found a Focus 40 Blue and purchased it from someone for $350. The display seems to work except for a couple of pins. Specifically, it looks like dot 3 in cell 2 and dot 6 in cell 3 don't seem to be moving up and down. Does the display simply need to be cleaned? If so, how do I safely clean it? Any help is greatly appreciated.
