Re: How do you guys dispense water?

Hi.@GrannyCheeseWheel, that's not exactly how our plugs work. There's 3 prongs, one that is slightly longer, then two below that eather side, oh also; I think your prongs are a circle shape where as our are kind of squareish, you then plug the plug into the wall, there's no flaps it's just 3 small wholes, then go from there. The clock doesn't bother me or my family, we don't use it. It would be nice if the volume settings would save but they don't.As for this spark thing, she was in Rome at the time I think. We don't talk anymore but yeah, perhaps the socket was old, I don't know.

Re: How do you guys dispense water?

I'm half wondering if it might just be a hallmark of older sockets. When I was living with my grandmother for a time, I remember the sockets would occasionally spark when I plugged something in. Nothing major, certainly not liable to start a fire, but noticeable. Do also keep in mind that her house is basically a relic, in the middle of what is essentially an old folks estate, and they have the really old sockets with the classic switches. Not really sure how to describe them, but those of you who have seen them will know what I'm talking about.

Re: How do you guys dispense water?

A one foot spark? I mean, maybe if she unplugged an arc welder or a circular saw when it was under heavy load. That is far from the norm. In point of fact, they all spark, even yours. As long as the switch is on and you plug or unplug, there's a spark, that's how electricity works. On a microwave, all you're powering when it's not being used is the light when the door is open and the microcontroller. The microcontroller is not going to significantly run your bill up. You could turn the switch off, but you'd have to reset your clock. If you don't care about the clock, OK then do it if that's what floats your boat.We dont' leave those types of things plugged in over here. George Foreman grills get unplugged, same as toasters, mixers, blenders, food processors, air fryers, convection ovens, etc.I will concede that the U.K. plug seems to be the better choice of design. I've never seen one, but from what I understand, the ground prong is a bit longer, so it gets inserted first, it then opens these little flaps which let the other two go in. I like that. It's safer and reduces the chance of injury. Not only that, but it's safer for your electronics as well. When we talk about standby, what happens is we have our device in normal operating mode, we press the power button and standby mode engages. This usually involves relays opening up which breaks contact to the things that are actually getting power. But things like capacitors will take their fill and stay charged. You can't overcharge a capacitor, so it takes what it can - which is only a few seconds, if even that - and it's just sitting there. With nothing drawing current, there's no need for anything to do anything. But, when it comes time to work again, those caps provide an inrush of current that is sufficient to start things up again.Everything takes more power to start up than it does to keep going. Whether we're talking about flipping lights on and off, turning on your stereo, starting up your car, whatever. Consume more electricity, burn more gas, you get the drift. Capacitors give that inrush current whereas, in the olden days, things took time to warm up.This was not only because of vacuum tubes, but because you didn't have the inrush current, so it had to build up in those caps to provide enough to kick that high voltage shit - like the picture tube in a TV - into gear.Capacitors do other jobs, namely, filtering out noise, but that's not relevant to this particular discussion. Suffice it to say that standby power is definitely more than no power, but it's less than full operational mode, and it helps to allow the device to come on instantly when it's called to action. You also want this for audio gear. Class A amps sound really good, but they're power hungry. You don't want to leave them on all the time, but you also don't want to turn them off either. Being on for long enough will settle them down, remove the bias from the signal, and they'll sound better. Standby power is the best of both worlds. It keeps the circuits energized without powering the actual stuff that's doing the work.

I was told something about if you left stuff plugged into the outlet, even though its not on it still draws a small bit of power, hence why in the UK, they have switches on the plugs because its more convenient to keep the plugs in and just flipping it on or off. IDK how true that is though. BTW Brad, the outlets don't be sparking all the time, it generally sparks when you stick the plug in and its barely in the socket.

Re: How do you guys dispense water?

I talked to a friend who knows this stuff, and I was wrong. The voltage shouldn't matter all that much. The outlets sparking thing, I mean they do, but it's such a small thing that I just can't justify why you would want a switch on the outlet. I first learned about this because apparently they have them in Australia.I guess it's good for one thing. If you have devices that have a parasitic drain, i.e. they pull power when they're off, a switch would stop it. Other than that, why? It makes me wonder if devices in countries that have these are manufactured to a worse standard. After all, why bother to make sure the thing is actually going to shut off properly if you can just flip the socket switch.

Re: How do you guys dispense water?

I googled it, camlorn seems to be right. The following is pasted from wikipedia:The choice of supply voltage is due more to historical reasons than optimization of the electric power distribution system—once a voltage is in use and equipment using this voltage is widespread, changing voltage is a drastic and expensive measure. A 230 V distribution system will use less conductor material than a 120 V system to deliver a given amount of power because the current, and consequently the resistive loss, is lower. While large heating appliances can use smaller conductors at 230 V for the same output rating, few household appliances use anything like the full capacity of the outlet to which they are connected. Minimum wire size for hand-held or portable equipment is usually restricted by the mechanical strength of the conductors. Electrical appliances are used extensively in homes in both 230 V and 120 V system countries. National electrical codes prescribe wiring methods intended to minimize the risk of electric shock and fire. Many areas, such as the US, which use (nominally) 120 V, make use of three-wire, split-phase 240 V systems to supply large appliances.

Hi.@GrannyCheeseWheel, that sounds horrible! So they can bill you a bit extra just cause they messsed up on their guestimated figgures? You've got to remember the UK is an older country and therefor has older ways of doing things. This is how you do it with the old system: you get this key like device, go to a post office? Or eletric shop, I'm not sure of the exact shop, then you'd ask to put £20 on the electric, the person does something with the key, you take it home and open this little box and put the card in. The box machine thing then recognises that you have £20 on it, then  beaps, you take the key out; close the door and you're done.It sounds like a lot of steps but it isn't.We're just getting smart meters. I think they started about 2 or so years ago? I'm not sure. My family won't get one because they think it will cost them more as you'll have to pay for it being plugged into the wall, I just think they're scared about this new tech and how it will be different from what they're used to.

We have meters, we just get billed for usage. Between meter readings, we have guestimates. If it's done wrong, we are charged more at the next meter reading and whatever billing cycle that falls under. Alternatively, if they mess up the other way, we'll get that in the form of a credit. Putting x amount on the meter sounds like you pay online ahead of time, which si kind of odd if you ask me.

@Camlorn, The 120-220 valt difference between Europe and America is definitely a thing, when my lady wants to run some American devices over here, she needs a transformer, not merely a plug converter. Your correct that in America cookers etc are indeed on 240 valts, but they're on a different circuit to your normal household outlets used for lights, computer etc. it's actually that way in Europe too, accept that the valtages are different, and apparently is a result of a combination of European trading standards, and America being the first in the world to adopt a power grid, then unfortunately not upgrading.Take a a look at This rather interesting artticle, for explanations and history.

I'm pretty sure the voltage doesn't matter, guys.  Maybe it does but I'd like to see a scientific resource on that.  You can't just throw infinite electricity through a heating element.  Our stoves need 220 because they're 4 burners and a giant cavity that's the size of like a hundred electric kettles and you might turn all of it on at once, but if we just ran heating elements in your electric kettle at the literal maximum efficiency possible it'd be a fire hazard more than anything, and probably melt itself.  There's also some interesting things around temperature sensors and such in that sort of turn-it-up-to-11 approach.  Also we'd have to make them of much higher quality materials and double the price.Coffeemakers are exactly the same thing as electric kettles just with a bit of extra filtration stuff, and those work fine.  Pretty sure this difference is just that U.S. households don't have much of a tea culture and thus don't have much need to boil water every single day.  Maybe I'm wrong, but "the U.S. is only 120V" seems quite off base.

Of course you have working ears, so you can hear when you've filled up the cup. so you only need to have your finger barily at the liquid so you don't get burned.

Agreed with dark, it's also a normal part of a kitchen for us, everyone has them and I also didn't realise this wasn't the case in some countries. I forgot not all countries use the same voltage, ours is around 220. Didn't know that difference would have any practical effect.

Re: How do you guys dispense water?

As cheese wheel said, it's to do with the lower valtage electricity in the states that electric kettles are less common. To me, boiling on a stove always seems needlessly primitive, like making toast on a griddle. When I was in the states I relied mostly on my sister in law's coffee maker, which did at least use filter coffee, but it did mean making tea for my lady was far more problmatic. Over here, boiling the kettle takes 2-3 minutes, though I confess I am one of these people whom Chris would condemn to death by train spotting, since I do have a habit of filling the kettle to the top when needed, albeit that since I tend to make a full cafitier of coffee and then drink over time, it's not just one or two cups that get used when I do that.I also use the electric kettle often for making pasta and such, indeed while I could live without one, to me it's such an essential piece of kitchen equipment it does seem strange not to have one.

Re: How do you guys dispense water?

@18Nope... I'm guessing your family does this thing that makes my blood boil in about 5 seconds:They'll fill the kettle all the way to the brim... Then boil it for the 5 minutes it takes, costing shite loads in electricity, which isn't too great for the environment, especially when everyone's doing it (especially the Irish). Then, after reminding the world at large that "a watched kettle never boils", they'll poor 1 or 2 cups of tea, then leave the other 15 litres of water to go cold, before repeating the process. This annoys me so much because I know I do it myself. The water boiler dispenses with all such silliness. And ours has 2 spouts, so you can make 2 cups of tea at a time; leave the machine doing its thing while you bugger off and do something useful. The only thing more annoying than the above scenario is one I've only encountered once: A lady I was on shift with the other week went into the kitchen at the start of our shift and left the kettle to boil, then went on with her work. When I asked her if she wanted me to make her drink, as she'd clearly forgotten or something, she declined. When I reminded her she'd just boiled the kettle, she replied "Yes, it's a habit. Then it'll be ready for when I need it. That's what I've always done." She didn't need it for another 2 hours.Such a profligate waste of energy should be punishable by 6 months chained up in a room with the most boring and talkative train spotter in the world.BTW, I just timed our water boiler: It took 01:35. That was from me pressing the button, to my cup being ready to take off the machine. Gotta love Morphy Richards.

Re: How do you guys dispense water?

5 minutes, even 3 minutes is a rather slow kettle by my standards as well. Haven't actually timed ours but I have a rough idea of how long it feels to heat something in the microwave for 3 minutes and I'm pretty sure most kettles don't take that long. Kettles are pretty ubiquitous here as well, we use them not only for tea/coffee but also for boiling water before putting it in a pot for cooking.

Re: How do you guys dispense water?

There's probably better kettles. Mine was some $20 thing from Amazon that I got during my tea-making phase as an experiment.  Things like the keurig can give you a cup of hot water instantaneously, and we had this really scary one when I was a kid that took a single-serve cup of water from cold to boiling in like 15 seconds.Stovetop is lame unless you've got a powerful stove, to be honest.

Re: How do you guys dispense water?

We bought this water boiler for environmental reasons. After having used it for a few years, while I love the machine itself, I have found myself out of practise with a standard kettle which I'm not too happy with. For anyone who doesn't like getting burnt, move your finger up and down in the cup. That halves the amount of time your finger stays in contact with the hot water, and means you won't jerk when the hot water first touches you.

Re: How do you guys dispense water?

Electric kettles would not work as well in the states as they do in the U.K. because of our power. We have 110 here and you guys have 220. Due to the ways of current and blibbity blah, you really have 208 but still. This is going to be far more efficient than heating it up with 110, which would take longer. Our electric stoves are plugged into 220, it's just that the majority of our receptacles are not 220, but instead the household standard of 110.

Same as Rashad here. Electric kettle. pouring slowly, and my asbestos finger :d. I have used liquid level indicators in the past, but stopped when I made coffee in a cafetier, since the indicator won't fit over the side of one.You can however practice, by getting a small, one cup electric kettle which are far easier to handle one handed, and using the liquid level indicator. I will say, if I wasn't in a country where electric kettles are usual, there would be more of a problem, indeed it's one of the major things I missed while living with my lady's family in America, since heating a kettle on the top of a stove would be doable, but a bit more problematic.
