Re: Jaws singing?

Mbrola is the same as Macintalk iirc. Enter phonemes and pitch contours. Last I tried though it had limitations, like high pitches being oddly quantized and duration limits. Macintalk sounds cooler in my opinion, but I always liked that formant synth singing sound. Besides, Mbrola is harder to set up as it is purely a phonetic platform, there's no actual TTS in play. If you want it to synthesize speech you have to enter the phonemes and pitches yourself. There is a way to make Eloquence sing if you put in a lot of effort and are really comfortable with audio editing. I have yet to really do something productive with this trick, but I experimented with it briefly a while back and got some cool results.Enter some text, get it roughly in time with Eloquence. Don't worry about pitch, but set inflection to 0 for a more static sound. Record this to an audio file/track and use an audio editor to get it the rest of the way to time. Then on a second track use a synth t
o record a melody. Then use a vocoder (my favorite is the old but awesome MDA Talkbox) to vocode the speech with the synth. While a lot of vocoders tend to sort of distort the voice character and diction to a point, MDA Talkbox seems to do this the least, and it still sounds like Eloquence. For added realism you can add noise to the synth track where sibilants and other consonants are prominent before vocoding.

Re: Jaws singing?

there is a little problem on the iPhone. If you come across any text that enters the tune mode, which is how you make it sing, voice over will just flat out crash and reboot. I personally did this on a macintosh virtual machine, which is not ideal, and it's running ml, but at least I don't have to spend 1600 bucks on a computer just to make the synth sing. As for the singing code itself, it is indeed very complex, and you would be advised to learn how to do it with dectalk first, believe me, it'll carry over. Another issue is that because macintalk was not intended to be used for singing, but instead to define special pitch contours, all values for frequency are in hertz, and you have to specify a start and an end pitch for every phoneme otherwise it ramps. Dectalk can just flat out do it with a note format. It can do hertz too, but macintalk's approach to hertz is better than dectalk's. Also do note that the only voices that can sing on mac vms, real macs
, iPhones and the like, are the voices branded macintalk. This is voices such as fred, victoria, alex, ralph, etc. None of the pre formatted singing voices such as pipe organ can do it, and none of the vocalizer voices can even come close. Also alex is not a good voice for singing due to the sample based algorithm, it breaks things. I would use the formant voices if I were you, that's fred, ralph, kathy, etc. Those voices that sound very synthesized and have that little hiss on them. But to figure out how to make macintalk sing, google apple developer imbedded speech commands macintalk.

Re: Jaws singing?

JAWS really can't sing. there's a hacky way to do it, but all it is is just changing the inflection to a monotone and using clever misspellings. Even then, I don't know if JAWS processes speech commands properly. Last I tried, it processed them, but it also spoke them and didn't act on them immediately.

Re: Jaws singing?

Macintalk coding on the iPhone? Do you mean you can actually code songs for Fred and Victoria from the iPhone? If so, please tell me how to do this as this sounds quite interesting.

Re: Jaws singing?

Macintalk on Apple devices like the iPhone is also a good choice, however it's more complicated to code songs, and it does have an autotune ish sound.

Re: Jaws singing?

Also, it is very hard to code the durations of the notes, and it is very staccato as there is a gap between the singing of each note. DECTalk is the speech synthesizer that is probably the best for learning to code singing.
